If EVER we (as a species) need a little lift from time to time.......just hear the words of Gandalf............. "There are other forces at work in this world, besides the will of evil"
Hard to accept sometimes...........but still true.
People don't really understand, this movie (my favortie movie of all time, i can resit every word) is in a way just like the movie signs. Everything fits in, every choice they made was the right one. If it weren't for gollum frodo would of failed, in a way every creature in middle earth had a role to play even sauron.
"Many that live deserve death, and some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be to eager to deal out death and justice. Even the very wise cannot see all ends."
you might wanna replace the word justice with the word judgement in your description, but it's a real good definition of what this scene is all about.
I love this speech. It is my favorite scene in the Fellowship os the Ring!!! It is the most moving and meaningfull in this movie, at least that is how i feal.
Strange, I'm not religious, but I believe things do happen for a reason, eg sometimes things go for you inexplicably, that there are forces at work which we can't control. Is it possible to believe that without religion?
Tolkien was a devout Catholic. Gandalf was a Maia, like an angel. The other forces at work? Frodo dreams of Gandalf numerous times: the Valar (gods) gave him those dreams. Aragorn gets to MInas Tirith quickly going upriver - becaues Manwe, the lord of the Valar, lord of the winds, wanted to get him there.
Well, you could see it as a God argument, but I meant it in another way. People generally focus on the negative in the world, and believe that the forces of evil are too strong to overcome so they just sit back hopeless. By "evil", I mean the greedy and powerful that manipulate economies and politics to suit their end goals. But through the thick fog of despair, there are also people in high places that fight against the malicious and the wicked. Or, at least that's what I believe.
@d2eux Should it say "There are forces at work in this world besides the will of *GOOD* and evil?". This would suggest that it's not all just good or evil, and that there are...... neutral forces at work just....... running life, to an extent I guess. Gandalf is quite a mumbler, and I can't here him very well when he says the line. But whether or not he says it, I think it's a good thought that the "forces" are not just black and white.
No joke, in my GCSE year, I'd been out of touch with LOTR for a bit, and when exams were approaching I thought, I just don't want to do them, I wish it wasn't happening, then I thought of this exact quote. Thanks Gandalf.
Yeh, I always thought of Gandalf as a Jesus figure. The way he died then came back, and the way everyone expected him to crush evil but he never did. And the Fellowship, the disciples?
Don't mindlessly let religion control your beliefs make your own individual beliefs though life experiences. The bibles not from God its from another human of flesh and blood. Allow your own mind to find your own truth and own beliefs. But at the same time accept all other views.
Christian morals exist in all church denominations. Thing is, sometimes (some) people get wrapped up in the denominations themselves. Faith in God is most important - regardless of the denomination.
Faith in your god isn't really necessary. Faith in humanity, in decency, and in good is fine enough.
People have this idea that Christian morals are original. Far from it. As an atheist, I still live a very moral life, which is very charitable to others.
You are right about one thing - a person can have morals without having God in their life. However, without faith if God, what do think happens when your life is over then?
Well, not like it matters what any of us think, but here goes.
I've lived my short life with others in mind. I hope that I've helped others be more comfortable with their lives, and have loved every minute of it, good or bad.
If there is nothing, that's great. That would just make this life that much more precious and rare.
If there's a reward, okay, but that's not why I do the things I do.
I just don't like the idea of living by a book that was written by people just as clueless as us.
Are you saying that Cathoilcs cannot have good Christian morals? Tolkien was raised by a Catholic priest after his mother the death of his mother - who was disowned for converting to Catholicism. She died for her faith and Tolkien would write that faith right into the book...
um im catholic and im pretty sure were a little nicer that alot of harcore christans. yea we have good values too ya dickface do not judge unto others lest you be judged yourself
This scene has had such a huge impact on me. I'm so glad I found it on here. It deals so much with the basic themes of Christianity that we see come out in Tolkien's work. It talks about dealing out judgment, free will, and that their is good in this world all in one scene. Absolutely amazing.
I have read Nietzsche - and I bet Tolkien did, too. You, however, should read/watch LOTR from Tolkien's perspective as this is HIS story and Tolkien was not only theist but a strong convert to Catholicism!
