  • FUCK OFF COMMERCIALS

  • If EVER we (as a species) need a little lift from time to time.......just hear the words of Gandalf............. "There are other forces at work in this world, besides the will of evil"

Hard to accept sometimes...........but still true.

  • Gives me some hope for the West yet. We may still rebound from our decline.

  • already 10 years from the first LOTR Film.. God i miss those times

  • @heroforages ik it seems like yesterday

  • which fucking dumbass disliked this?!

  • Would've been nice to have passed Gandalf's words to those morons who tore up my city.

  • This is so beautiful that I am srsly dying inside...

  • People don't really understand, this movie (my favortie movie of all time, i can resit every word) is in a way just like the movie signs. Everything fits in, every choice they made was the right one. If it weren't for gollum frodo would of failed, in a way every creature in middle earth had a role to play even sauron.

  • And when we see the destiny of Gollum at the end of the trilogy, all that makes sense: "(...) Even the very wise cannot see all ends" =DDDD

So we understand, them everybody have a purpose. =DDDD

  • Wow...I can't believe that this was created in the same universe as Rebecca Black's Friday

  • @QuimShtank haha!

  • So fucking uplifting!!!!

  • what I wait for the Bilbo film..

  • "So do all who live to such times, but that is not for them to decide..."

  • @MehrunesDaagon I enjoy your user name, sir.

  • "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us"one sentence that explains meaning of life

  • "Many that live deserve death, and some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Do not be to eager to deal out death and justice. Even the very wise cannot see all ends."

  • this is one of the most true statements i have ever heard

  • you might wanna replace the word justice with the word judgement in your description, but it's a real good definition of what this scene is all about.

  • just awesome! i love this scene. LORD OF THE RINGS ROCKS!

  • For anyone looking for the music in the background it's "Gollum" from the FOTR extended soundtrack

  • I love Gandalf, I wish the ring didn´t came to me..

  • this is why lotr will always be the best trilogy!! amazing acting and script, along with epic battles

  • I have the poster of this scene. I remember seeing this just a few months after 9/11, and this scene was very powerful.

  • I love this speech. It is my favorite scene in the Fellowship os the Ring!!! It is the most moving and meaningfull in this movie, at least that is how i feal.

  • 'Bilbo was meant to find the ring, that mean you too were meant to find it, and that is an encouraging thought.'

  • all you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you.

  • Many that live deserve death, some that die deserve life. love that quote

  • who are you to judge.. before it is over..can´t we make a new Gandalf religion!?

  • Strange, I'm not religious, but I believe things do happen for a reason, eg sometimes things go for you inexplicably, that there are forces at work which we can't control. Is it possible to believe that without religion?

  • Great words

Show Tolkien and his great wisdom in those last words

  • Tolkien was a devout Catholic. Gandalf was a Maia, like an angel. The other forces at work? Frodo dreams of Gandalf numerous times: the Valar (gods) gave him those dreams. Aragorn gets to MInas Tirith quickly going upriver - becaues Manwe, the lord of the Valar, lord of the winds, wanted to get him there.

  • Well, you could see it as a God argument, but I meant it in another way. People generally focus on the negative in the world, and believe that the forces of evil are too strong to overcome so they just sit back hopeless. By "evil", I mean the greedy and powerful that manipulate economies and politics to suit their end goals. But through the thick fog of despair, there are also people in high places that fight against the malicious and the wicked. Or, at least that's what I believe.

  • Words of wisdom from a wise character. However, this is the part that stands out for me the most:

"There are other forces at work in this world [Frodo], besides the will of evil."

this is one people tend to forget

  • You are so right :)

  • @d2eux Should it say "There are forces at work in this world besides the will of *GOOD* and evil?". This would suggest that it's not all just good or evil, and that there are...... neutral forces at work just....... running life, to an extent I guess. Gandalf is quite a mumbler, and I can't here him very well when he says the line. But whether or not he says it, I think it's a good thought that the "forces" are not just black and white.

  • FRODO I wish the ring had never come to me...I wish none of this had happened.

    GANDALF

So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.

  • Gandalf is by far the best character in the entire series...

  • @GreyhametheGrey amen to that

  • No joke, in my GCSE year, I'd been out of touch with LOTR for a bit, and when exams were approaching I thought, I just don't want to do them, I wish it wasn't happening, then I thought of this exact quote. Thanks Gandalf.

  • "Huh, It's that way!"

    "He's remembered!"

"No, but the air doesn't smell so foul down here. When in trouble Periadoc always follow your nose!"

  • Gandalf is a pool of wisdom. I'd like to have him as a grandfather ;)

And if we think about these line: All we have to decide, is what to do with the time that is given to us.

He is damn right. We cannot decide what happens to the world, but we have the strength to decide what we are doing while we live on her.

  • wish I could say stuff like that when my friends are feeling terrible about stuff

  • Gandalf, to me, is a christ-figure in LOTR.

Especially when he is resurrected and returns as Gandalf the White.

  • The books have many Christian undertones...

  • Yeh, I always thought of Gandalf as a Jesus figure. The way he died then came back, and the way everyone expected him to crush evil but he never did. And the Fellowship, the disciples?

  • @kkwillsaveus its a start

  • Which of my comments were you replying to?

  • That Gandalf could become a religion. Why not? Isn't that almost what most religions do. No offense to those who are religious.

  • I have never thought of it that way, but is sure is an interesting thought! I'll have that in mind next time i watch these movies :) Thank you!

  • this scene always sends chills up my spine. it reminds me of my Grandpa talking to me.

  • GANDALF 4EVER !!!!!!

    WIZARDS ARE PRO

  • i love gandalf

  • Poor Gollum.

  • you have to love gandalf and his wisdom

  • dick

  • all we have to decide is wat to do wit the time we are given dont waste ur time cursing others.

  • Don't mindlessly let religion control your beliefs make your own individual beliefs though life experiences. The bibles not from God its from another human of flesh and blood. Allow your own mind to find your own truth and own beliefs. But at the same time accept all other views.

  • bravo mate..

  • "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us". Helps me thorugh hard times in life. A real moral guid-line.

  • Such a brilliant scene, such a wise lesson.

  • Agrees completely!

This lines are written on my arm.

  • Absolutely beuitiful. I love how the music changes when Frodo starts saying: "I wish the ring had never come to me." Just listen to it, wonderful! :D

  • Christian morals exist in all church denominations. Thing is, sometimes (some) people get wrapped up in the denominations themselves. Faith in God is most important - regardless of the denomination.

  • Faith in your god isn't really necessary. Faith in humanity, in decency, and in good is fine enough.

People have this idea that Christian morals are original. Far from it. As an atheist, I still live a very moral life, which is very charitable to others.

  • You are right about one thing - a person can have morals without having God in their life. However, without faith if God, what do think happens when your life is over then?

  • Well, not like it matters what any of us think, but here goes.

I've lived my short life with others in mind. I hope that I've helped others be more comfortable with their lives, and have loved every minute of it, good or bad.

If there is nothing, that's great. That would just make this life that much more precious and rare.

If there's a reward, okay, but that's not why I do the things I do.

I just don't like the idea of living by a book that was written by people just as clueless as us.

  • exactly if you good then it doesnt matter if god or the gods are real then they will reconize good deeds...

  • kinda stinks that j.r.r. tolkien was a catholic. he really had good christian morals

  • Are you saying that Cathoilcs cannot have good Christian morals? Tolkien was raised by a Catholic priest after his mother the death of his mother - who was disowned for converting to Catholicism. She died for her faith and Tolkien would write that faith right into the book...

  • well ure judging him for judging you genuis.yea you maybe nicer because you try to seem welcoming to others rather than telling them the truth

  • coool

  • Awesome!

  • Kinda like Pride and Prejudice it's amazing how much impact this has on my life.

  • "All we have to desid is what we do to the time we're given." Awesome!

  • my favorite quote ever

  • Mine as well

  • Makes me cry every time

  • "Many that has lived deserved to die, but many that has died deserved to live"

  • gandalf is awsome! he really inspires you for the right things

  • This scene has had such a huge impact on me. I'm so glad I found it on here. It deals so much with the basic themes of Christianity that we see come out in Tolkien's work. It talks about dealing out judgment, free will, and that their is good in this world all in one scene. Absolutely amazing.

  • his talk is the best! i learned so much from this!

  • Love it. My favorite of almost any movie

  • the best speech of the trilogy and the best movie of the trilogy. This speech alone has had a huge impact on me.

  • My favorite scene of the whole trilogy, and the most wisdom imparted by Gandalf ever.

  • actually, if you don't accept the possibility of an afterlife/God, then pity is actually worthless. Read Nietzsche.

  • I have read Nietzsche - and I bet Tolkien did, too. You, however, should read/watch LOTR from Tolkien's perspective as this is HIS story and Tolkien was not only theist but a strong convert to Catholicism!

  • really? i thought he was always a catholic cool oh and this is one of the best scenes ever in any movie

  • awesome

  • "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

Thank you Gandalf. I have decided to study hard for my final exams.

  • "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us."

    Truly words to live by.

    This scene is wonderful.

Some of my favourite quotes from the trilogy.

  • Wise words, do not be to eager to deal out death and judgment
