Nadal is talented, for sure. Maybe the greatest in clay. But, he is everything that Kuerten wasn`t playing, boring. The agressivity of Kuerten was amazing. Spanish player are boring, playing. Its just an infinite go-back, go and back boring time ... then the adversary give up to play.

thanks guga, a symbol, an inspiration ......... i'll never forget to persons in my life, Ayrton Senna da Silva and Gustavo Kuerten. My grandson will know about you both.
@mauriciomille I think Guga retired in 2008 or something, his last match was in Roland Garros against Paul-Henri Mathieu, but he had just 40% of his level... I'd say that the real Guga "retired" in 2004 when he started having injuries :/
He's 6'2 ... That's not that tall. Nadal is about the same height, along with Federer and Djokovic and Sampras and many more top players. 6'1 to 6'2 seems to be a very common height among the greats ... Tall players often like the fast surfaces like grass and hardcourt because they usually hit down on the ball with more pace and strength so they benefit from the speed. Clay courts bounce higher but they also play slower which means tall players have to do a lot of running.
I played tennis my whole life and i think that Kuerten was the best player on clay ever. Speed, feeling and fitness like Nadal but a more agressive style with incredible angles. I feel sorry for him that he has to finish his career so early, however he is a man with a positive atitude.
you guys do realize taht neither of these guys has the best backhand of all time right?? both have good backhands but not even close to the best except federer is top 10 maybe
Federer is my favorite player of all times! But I am Brazilian and I have huge respect for this man called Kuerten! It's a shame I couldn't watch those games... I wish I could have seen Kuerten ruling Federer. Back in those days I was too young and have never heard of tennis, hihi.
@iskayualker u said it all! guga is the complete anit-nadal. ... nadal hitss a topspin forehand on his backhand, guga steps in and smaks it down the line... would be a priceless match!
is it true guga came out of retirement at the 04 RG just to play federer? someone explain the story.//.......... he is a key figure in tennis history if its true
@butterflycaught900 He underwent a hip surgery and took him a long time to recover. Actually he never really recovered and had to retire due to hip pain.
Best on clay that I've seen are Nadal, Borg, Guga in that order. Didn't see Laver on clay but saw him on other surfaces, so can't rate him. Nice video.
How good was Guga? So smooth no one could touch him on clay in the French Open. I think Rafa is the King of Clay but what a match they would have had.
@matisms Ummm, you forgot about Rafa (you know Rafael Nadal)! The guy who is actually beating Federer and will probably bring about the demise of Roger's great career?
@mauriciomille Yeah. But u must consider one thing: Guga was already in decline when matched Federer. And Federer had already defeated Sampras in wimbledon.
I can't believe that people started another Federer x Nadal battle in a GUGA VIDEO ! ! ! ... seriously, ppl just need to stfu and enjoy the guy Kafelnikov once said was like "Picasso"!
its ridiculous to call anyone the greatest of all time when the variables used to compare players and generations change....the best you can say and be objective about it, is that they are the best of their common eras.....impossible to compare laver with a wood racket and rafa or roger with the state of the art equipment they play with now....
@hattrickster33 greatest tennis player of all time?? do u really want to make yourself look like an idiot? did roger beat borg? laver? sampras in his prime? edberg, becker or rafter in their prime? of course not.....wasnt guga nursing a hip injury???? please, fed excusers make me laugh.....he's lucky he started to play at the end of the greatest era of tennis of all time.....
You can't compare them...with the exception of Sampras. The rackets are completely different and its more about power than strategy as you can see from players like Nadal. Federer uses more strategy so he is able to beat them.
@fromanotherstar Well..it would be difficult for Roger to beat Laver or Borg...unless they decide to go back to the circuit...Roger is the greatest of his time...but not the best of all time...
@Ethanovic Yes, you have a point. But lets take a look... Michael Schumacher for instance, have all the records in F1, but that doesn't make him ANY NEAR the best of all times. The 2004 poll inside F1, Senna was the greatest, Schumacher was 5. (Voted by Drivers and Experts) In recent magazines, Clark, Moss and Senna were the greatest, i mean, NOBODY thinks MS is the greatest. Yet he held all the records.
Do you get my point? In my opinion, Borg and Sampras were the greatest ever.
@Taikamya NOBODY?? There's a huge amount of ppl that aknowledge MS records and places him on top (me for one). The only thing it proves is that, there isn't a factual GOAT. There never will be. Schumi isn't (even though i would want to) and federer won't either, neither will Senna (ppl who say is the greatest are just either former drivers like brundle who are jealous at schumi or sennafans/ brazilians). I hate this GOAT quest, i like the discussion, but it can never conclude anything, just bias
@markitov his first french open was legendary. His play was so exciting that you became an instand fan. One of the most exciting backhands and a great tennispersonallity! I miss the old days, but i'm glad i grew up with the tennis of the late 80's and 90's
BRASIL! <3 GUGA!
@iskayualker Yes, this match would be awesome! However... "at their best" Guga could beat Nadal easy. I mean... Nadal and Federer are well beyond other now-a-days and... Guga faced Medvedev, Kafelnikov, Agassi, Sampras, AND Federer too, and he won every one of them... I bet Nadal wouldn't stand a chance against Agassi or Sampras.
On clay nobody can beat a peak Nadal, NOBODY, especially the clay-court masters Sampras, lol, Agassi was good on clay but not great. Kuerten played only once in a hard court slam quartefinal and you're comparing him to the likes of Sampras or Agassi...
Nadal is the absolute clay court master, Borg, Kuerten, Lendl, you name it are just not in his league, the dude's a beast
Federer on the other hand is the best on hard courts, on grass I give it 50-50 to Federer and Sampras but it's a close one
@iskayualker I think Nadal would prevail. The game has changed even since Guga played. It´s even faster, more agressive. If you look at Federer in these clips he actually looks a little slower and more defensive than when playing Nadal today.
Still, I prefer watching Guga over Nadal. That one-handed backhand is to die for – so beautiful.
what are we discussing here? Kuerten during his prime on clay beating federer there before Federer even started hitting his peak form? I would have liked to see the 2 play on grass for example, but oh wait...Kuerten never seems to get anywhere there.
During his prime? AHAHHAHAHAHAH Man, this is 2004, Guga already had TWO MAJOR cirurgys and Fereder was already N.1 of the world. Gugas prime was 2001.
there's a big difference between being number 1 in the world, and FEDERER's prime (the period where he was just untouchable and not just another number 1). Obviously you fail to understand the fact that he's the greatest player to ever play the game; a fact which was further confirmed yesterday when he added the one major to have eluded him. And he's only 27 so he could quite still have a few majors up his sleeve. Now I'm sure in your fantasy world Guga is/was a better player, but not in reality
Wrong, I never said Guga was a better player, well, in fact, if both were in their respective primes IMO Guga would win in clay, just like Nadal does, and Federer would beat Guga in any other surface, I was just correcting your wrong information about guga's prime.
only a QF on winbledon, i don`t know if this is nothing to a player who comes from a country that doesn't have any history in tennis... stop to suck federer balls and open your eyes. Federer is the best player of all time, ok?Guga is better than Federer on Clay, fact. Like Nadal. And yes, I love Roger.
EaCh SeAson HAs A New TeNNis BesT PlAyEr Now A Days NaDal is The BesT Nor Even FeDereR Can DeFeat Him, But I ThinK FeDerEr Is GoinG To ComE BaCk To His ThronE Go RoGer!!
why do you write characters in lower and upper case?...seems like your fingers are glued to the keyboard all the time....(no disrespect, am just asking..)
Nadal beat Federer in 2004 on hard courts in Miami...Nadal's least favorite surface...Federer, even if he wins nothing going forward is the standard by which tennis perfection is measured...No one ever replicated his dominance during 2005-2007. He has been in 19 straight Grand slams semis...Sampras never achieved this and Borg retired too early to be considered the best of all time. Even the number of titles he won does not make him number 1...definitely a great player though...
actually nalbandian just did it like last year or something in one of the last master series tournaments, he beat djokovic, nadal, and federer in one tournament. pretty sick.
Nadal is talented, for sure. Maybe the greatest in clay. But, he is everything that Kuerten wasn`t playing, boring. The agressivity of Kuerten was amazing. Spanish player are boring, playing. Its just an infinite go-back, go and back boring time ... then the adversary give up to play.

boyzinho29 2 years ago 2

sempreinter14 2 years ago

so much nicer to hear the grunting and crisp thwacks of the ball.

Kuerten had too much juice on the backhand for him.

GUGA best

Only 2 players def Federer in Roland Garros since 2004: Kuerten & Nadal.
Guga was the best in his time & forever on my mind!!!
LuizDaudtJunior 2 years ago 4
what are we discussing here? Kuerten during his prime on clay beating federer there before Federer even started hitting his peak form? I would have liked to see the 2 play on grass for example, but oh wait...Kuerten never seems to get anywhere there.
MyLastKissGoodbye 2 years ago
During his prime? AHAHHAHAHAHAH Man, this is 2004, Guga already had TWO MAJOR cirurgys and Fereder was already N.1 of the world. Gugas prime was 2001.
Mephistobr 2 years ago
there's a big difference between being number 1 in the world, and FEDERER's prime (the period where he was just untouchable and not just another number 1).
MyLastKissGoodbye 2 years ago
Wrong, I never said Guga was a better player, well, in fact, if both were in their respective primes IMO Guga would win in clay, just like Nadal does, and Federer would beat Guga in any other surface, I was just correcting your wrong information about guga's prime.

only a QF on winbledon, i don`t know if this is nothing to a player who comes from a country that doesn't have any history in tennis... stop to suck federer balls and open your eyes. Federer is the best player of all time, ok?Guga is better than Federer on Clay, fact. Like Nadal. And yes, I love Roger.

why do you write characters in lower and upper case?...seems like your fingers are glued to the keyboard all the time....(no disrespect, am just asking..)

i disagree
although nadals higher in ranks i think federers way better
nadal has been off his game after the round of 32 in roland garros after getting messed up by some rank 20 - 30 dudein 4 sets
although nadal can run and run
federer still is better

Also, in the words of Pete Sampras "Guga have a perfect backhand, i never see anything like that before"
Don't like it ? cry.
Like it ? enjoy.

Nop. The best of all times is Bjorn Borg, and the ones who came near are McEnroe and Connors.
Guga, beat Sampras, Agassi and Kafelnikov IN THE SAME TOURNAMENT, nobody ever did that, beat the "top 3" of the world one after another.
Also, Nadal could never beat Federer of 2004, and Guga even after 2 surgeries, beat him 3x0.
Nadal and Federer are the bests now-a-days, but, in the same Era as Guga, they would never top 1.
This is transparent as water.
Taikamya 2 years ago 2
Nadal beat Federer in 2004 on hard courts in Miami...Nadal's least favorite surface...Federer, even if he wins nothing going forward is the standard by which tennis perfection is measured...No one ever replicated his dominance during 2005-2007. He has been in 19 straight Grand slams semis...Sampras never achieved this and Borg retired too early to be considered the best of all time. Even the number of titles he won does not make him number 1...definitely a great player though...
AndreasNikolaou1960 2 years ago
actually nalbandian just did it like last year or something in one of the last master series tournaments, he beat djokovic, nadal, and federer in one tournament. pretty sick.

twice in consecutive master series tournament i think.. can't remember if it was 2006 or 2007

Federer and Nadal are nothing. This is a new "Schumacher era", win 50 Grand Slams against nobody is very easy...
Sampras, Agassi and Guga played into the same era. THIS was HARD COMPETITION...

guga was very very CrAzY!!!!!!!!!
i liked watch his games.

This match 3 was in the year of kuerten's return after two surgeries on his hip. Federer was the n.1 of the world at this time.
But anyway 3 x 0 GUGA.
Can you see the legend?
guigowww 2 years ago 4
1:00 - Can Nadal volley like that?
Nadal is great, but Kuerten is the one (in clay)!
