Arteries carry oxygenated blood away from the heart, with the exception of the pulmonary arteries, and the color of said blood is bright red. In contrast, the function of veins, with the exception of the pulmonary veins, is to carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart where it can be expelled to the lungs for reoxygenation. The color of this blood is not blue, but a dark red.
