these shots look so easy to pull off, but a lot goes into them.
No offense, but a lot more work went into this than you guys needed. Take the car scene. Instead of doing a full CG background, you could've just used an image. The lights you probably could've done another way, but that was just as fast.
unfortunately that is not true. hence the live-action camera's movement was in 3d space, a 2d background would have been easily revealed itself as such, so this would have been no option. hence to that fact also the light-cones needed to be real 3d volume.
yes, tracking was done by a combination of boujou, PFtrack and manual adjustments within maya.
okay, I worded that badly. what I meant by "full" CG background was that not all of the elements had to be 3D. Some of them that were distant (like the house and the crates) could've been 2D because you can hardly tell they are 3D in the final composite. The closer ones did have to be modeled, though.
By the way, the models in that shot were incredible. Granted, they weren't too complex, but they were about as perfect as you can get.

What program did you use to track it? Boujou?
