Does anyone know whether Tosca's storyline has any significance to Quantum of Solace? It'd be a trivial detail but i love it when they reference other works for good reason and I haven't seen the opera myself...
I think QoS gets knocked unfairly. Casino Royale was so brilliant that anything after was going to suffer. This scene ranks as one of the best in the entire franchise. Aside from the absolutely wretched theme music (and I thought it couldn't get worse than Madonna) and some overly herky-jerky action scene editing, this movie still comes off better than any of the Brosnan films.
Completely agree, hopefully they can capture the feel of the 60's Bond films as well as the tone that was set up in the previous two outings. Craig and Connery are on the same level IMO...hopefully Mendes can knock Bond 23 out of the park. MGM needs to bail themselves out of chapter 11
I love the fact that the actor playing British minister Guy Haines (the guy at 49 seconds who says "I'm working on that") also plays the idiotic father in Channel 4's 'Friday Night Dinner'.
To be honest why are people blaming Daniel Craig so much? Shouldn't it be the friggin directors fault the film turned out ot be so damn different and unbondish? Srly..... Marc Foster is horrible why would anyone hire an Bourne Director for a Bond film??
this really has to be one of my favorite bond scenes of all time. it incorporates all the best things: Gadgets, well tailored suits, a crazy gun fight, an opera house, and great music. very good scene
@Rockwildon It's not a song, it's an opera. "Tosca" by Giacomo Puccini, written in 1900. But I give you that, arena music hasn't traveled far since then...
@kcorym ...at the very end of the film, when Bond confronts Vesper's former boyfriend, the woman he's with is the Canadian mentioned in this scene. Bond also mentioned that she was a member of "Canadian Intelligence"...
@kcorym The Canadian is the Corrine lady we see at the end of the film with Yusef Kabira, Vesper's ex-boyfriend who ensared women only to fake being in danger so they'd give up valuable intelligence.
The whole Tosca scenes from start to finish are my favourite from this movie, they were wonderfully original especially for a Bond film. I never understood where all the negativity for this film is justified. The worse you could say about it is that it's rushed, some of the acting from Greene and camille is bad, and it has a weak pre-epilogue ending. It's more of a Casino Royale part two than film in it's own right, but i enjoy watching it as much as any Bond film. Bond 23 will revert to formula
yeah, greene wasn't good, and i thought the airplane and boat scenes were added in for no reason and weren't very exciting, otherwise it had some good parts
OH MY GOD! this is your favourite Bond film? wow, thats cool, i've never known anyone to select this one as their favourite, howcomes? :D to me, it didn't feel like a bond film one bit, but i respect your opinion
i love all 22 films don't get me wrong but i prefer the darker more serious ones like From Russia with love Licenece to kill Casino royale and quantum of solace. Casino royale and Quantum of solace are my favourite because it everything i've ever wanted in a bond film. I hope the continue this dark path for bond 23. Maybe even using unused elements from the novel From russia with love
Fuck craig the untalented pice of shit this movie and casino royal would have been better if clive owen was bond he was the natural choice after brosnan
That was the point, when he said "You people should really find a better place to meet." That was the que that they had been comprimized and had to GTFO before M16 black ops would come in and pw3n them or something. At least that's what they thought.
Well, I thought, considering how they've been able to keep an organization like that hidden, they would have figured that they're in with thousands of people, they can't see who's listening in on them, so chances are he can't see them either, so stay in your seat. Don't stand up and give away exactly where you are. That's what I was thinking when I saw them get up.
Well they were so used to being secretive that when they heard some1 tell them they should find a better place to meet, they panicked, except for Mr White who had the brilliant idea of not moving and taking his earpiece off.
I believe he didn't move because he knew what to do, but I also think that he may not have moved because he still has a limp, and probably wouldn't be able to get out very casually....
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Yea well I guess I'm a hater, cause I say this movie was an average bond film. Although that was probably the director's fault. Daniel Craig is an amazing actor, but the director should've told him to be more flamboyant, cocky, humorous, whitty, and most of all WOMANIZING. In Quantum, he's just a brutal thug who can put pieces of a puzzle together easily. Where are the whitty quips? Where's all the easy bimboes? WHERE IS Q, AND MONEY PENNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, Q and Moneypenny not being in it is not the director's fault. I think the studio felt that their presence would have felt out of place in the movies.
I don't think "easy bimboes," is something that desperately needs to come back.
@ZombieMan04 I think the point of including characters such as Moneypenny and Q is that they'll be introduced gradually as Bond gains greater status within SIS (MI6). In an interview Daniel Craig remarked that Bond needs to 'earn' them and I agree with him. If they're weaved into the story and given a bit more than before then I don't think they'll feel out of place. Kelly Reilly for Moneypenny. Chiwetel Ejiofor for Q.
Rewatch Quantum again, there's plenty of humor and quips. We don't need them too much, we don't want to go back to Roger Moore's clown days, do we?
Moneypenny could be OK, (only if they make her a bit more serious than she was before) but Q = gadgets, gadgets = fail. They should continue the Craig era without gadgets.
And for Tomorrow Never Dies being one of the best Bond movies ever - I beg to differ. The film was dull as hell.
I think I was about 13... I can remember my mate and I watching it and we were going on about it and doing impressions for about 3 months after. Goldeneye was great...
But Daniel Craig has cast a big shadow over the Brosnan era.
I think people became disenchanted with Bond during that era, Brosnan karate chopping 16 stone men and knocking them unconscious never convinced anybody, poofy. It created a niche for Jason Bourne & Ethan Hunt.
People slate these Craig movies, but they are epic....
Thank you. And I would like the director of Tommorrow never dies, and The world is not enough to come in because those were some of the (in my opinion) BEST Bond movies. (But let us not challenge the higerarchy of Bondsmanship Sean Connery of course)
I heard in an interview why he did the whole buggy eyed scheme: he said that a lot of Bond villains had some characteristic that was somewhat evil and they gave him nothing to work with so he decided to give the opened evil eyed look...
Thank you for posting this clip. I couldn't follow it very well in the theatre. It is mentioned about focusing attention on the Canadian. I would love it the next Bond movie came to Canada.
The song from the sequence following this clip (that is, the gunfight through the restaurant) is actually from the end of Act II, after Tosca stabs Scarpia. A review I found online pointed out that the film 'cheats' a bit and jumps forward in the opera from the end of Act I to the end of Act II. I certainly don't mind them cheating a bit - the whole opera sequence was the highlight of the film for me.
I agree, this is the best scene in the film! I found the track that plays during this scene at the opera, but does anyone know the instrumental that plays just following this scene during the gunfight through the restaurant?
I downloaded the final to Toscas act 1 and it doesnt have the song from the following sequence though...And thats not on the Quantum of Solace OST either. :-/
Another detail that would be good for the Bond 23 is that there would be a flashback in the opening sequence (after the sequence of the gunbarrel) in that James Bond faces a dilemma that leads to the death of any of the involved character (Another big challenge for 007).
Bond has to find this last pleasure that abounds in his head as find the friendship of his new friends who should help him against the justice and the counterespionage: What do you think? And perhaps the Bond 23 will have a small air of From Russia with love it would like.
Bond will be used to show delight and courtesy to his enemies since they are so sophisticated as the organization: Quantum. Bond must be at his level to finish them and not to get involved in international troubles. Finally, there is a relation between Camille and Bond that still has not been solved.
Bond will be more coherent and clear of his acts as his evil context, but also there will be the intervention or matters of other characters as Felix Leiter and M that will keep him busy. Then, his new allies would appear: Moneypenny and Q (those who will meet Bond for the first time).
RECOMMENDATIONS OF BOND 23 (CAUTION: IT CONTAINS SPOILERS OF QUANTUM OF SOLACE)
I think that the Bond 23 must begin with the sequence of the traditional gunbarrel. And James Bond must face new enemies who could destroy or hurt minorities of Europe.
I keep on thinking that Daniel Craig is the ideal James Bond both for the dialogue and for the action. Its necessary to mention that Quantum of Solace is a well structured vision of the spy world that indicates us how James Bond adapts himself from a raw spy who still distinguishes discreetly what is good and what is bad to the super spy that we know now (according to the old James Bond movies).
I saw this movie yesterday. Its brilliant. Please give it an opportunity, only you dont hope to see anything similar to Casino Royale (although both stories are related in key scenes). Nevertheless, the action is very good and interesting (a movie of action that wakes up and suppresses your most secret emotions... at least those of James Bond). The performances are interesting. Olga Kurylenko is the sexiest and smartest Bond Girl of the XXIst century.
yes, frisco1968, your're right. it's the te deum and i must agree that it is one of the most beautiful scores in the whole opera. it was really impressive to sing it (i was lucky to be one of the bishops beneath the iris)!!!

Just found this:
"The section heard is Scarpia´s "Va, Tosca" (Te Deum) from the end of Act 1."

Totally agree!
Perhaps one of the best scenes in the film.
I wonder if "Quantum" will become MI6's arch-enemy like SPECTRE...

Agreed. That would really set the tone for the next film or two.
