the speech should be ' when we can build the warp 5 engine, I can sell it for a quick buck and spend it on tequila and hookers.' thats the real vision of zefran cochrane
@chetdog in the star trek universe as captain picard said in first contact "The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in our lives. We work to better ourselves and the rest of Humanity."
That was a surprisingly good show. It's just unfortunate they didn't get a 5th season. Also, Sato and Mayweather didn't get enough focus, and some things could've been done better, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. And no matter that the NX-01 is Akira-like. It actually looks better, in my opinion.
It was a pretty good show, i agree. But don't you ppl think, this is part of the Mirror Universe (ST:2009)? As we know, this is the first enterprise (NX-01) But the Kirk from TOS captained their first enterprise (Constitution). And in 2009, we've seen Mirror Scotty meantioning Portho's. So i think, this should be a part of the wholo mirror universe. And to be honest, the NX-01 looks hell better than TOS Constitution, or even the refit.. So.. What do you think?
@Dohkag0Grahlodd No. They had a 2-part episode IN the mirror-universe. Enterprise was in the "prime" universe, although I guess you could rationalise by saying that the events of First Contact changed the timeline a bit.
@Dohkag0Grahlodd Ah... you mean, the "new" timeline ? No. If we follow Star Trek in Narration order and not in chronological order, it makes a lot more sense, and it removes any and all grievance about them changing the timeline all the time. Anyway, since Nero goes back in time to a time _after_ Enterprise, I guess you could say it's _also_ part of the new timeline.
Mayweather: Course laid in, sir. Request permission to get underway.
T'Pol: The coordinates are off by .2 degrees.
Archer: (annoyed at the science officer) Thank you. Let's go.
Archer is a total d*ck! When you're moving at superluminal speeds, 0.2 degrees becomes a big factor. It could be the difference between arriving at a planet's orbit or flying into the parent star.
Screw you, science officer! I want to go fast!!! Yeehaw!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@liptonBlueBirdAdd I don't think the scene was written for scientific purposes. Rather I think it was to show Archer's attitude towards Vulcans more than anything. Whether she'd said 0.2 degrees or 68.2 degrees Archer's answer would have been the same.
Archer dismisses the input of his science officer, like she was a nobody. But if T'Pol felt the need to interject this piece of information then it was probably relevant to the situation at hand.
This scene establishes that Archer is a racist d*ck. He's willing to risk his ship and all hands aboard so he can tell off a Vulcan. Do you think Archer would have responded as rudely as he did if T'Pol happened to be human?
@liptonBlueBirdAdd I agree with all that. I'm saying the writers were establishing him as an intollerant dick ("asshole" also applies). It took him almost an entire season to lose that negative attitude. In the end both he and T'Pol became good friends. But the writers really wanted to show how most humans felt about beeing kept down by "the man" (Vulcans) when they had the urge to soar. To be sure, the Vulcans treated us like a conquered race. Just character development.
@spacecowboy5000 Okay. As long as you realize I don't really care about the actual numbers quoted in the show. I love Star Trek but they often get science wrong but I still love it.
And I get what the writers were aiming for with Archer's mistrust of the Vulcan hierarchy. However, I thought there were more subtle ways to portray this then putting the whole crew at risk.
Perhaps the writers didn't think we could pick up on Archer's bigotry without this obvious scene :)
Careful, kids Misterwhat isn't really interested in childrens' videogames and popmusic, he's only pretending because, well... he's actually more interested in children... Please be careful, do not contact him or give out any personal information.
. . . What an abscondantly horribly stupid reason to name someone captain. That's like saying, "Since George W. Bush' father was in charge during the original Gulf War which ended with a US victory, it's only fitting that his son be given charge of the country now."
You entirely missed the point. If they had said, "It is fitting, Archer being the greatest ______ in Starfleet Academy, that he now take command of this vessel.", then *thats* the reason.
When GW Bush took office the *reason* was that he won the election (theoretically).
But here apparently they decided it purely on the basis of the daddy clause . . . and they *admitted* it in the speech.
What he is actually saying is that Archer deserved the command no matter what, but it is good that the son of the maker of the Warp 5 engine is the commander.
And the gulf war being a victory, well, your mileage may vary
This is one of the few moments I like in this show. It's always nice to see a new Enterprise being launched, even if it's not my favorite incarnation of the beautiful lady, and nice to see Zefram Cochrane again, giving the new engine his blessing.
Agreed. Enterprise being launched is always an awesome sight, but ST:TMP set a standard with that launch that has never been duplicated or even touched.

Imagine it: thousands of inhabited planets at our fingertips.
And we'll be able to explore those strange new worlds, and seek out new life, and new civilizations.
This engine will let us go boldly, where no man has gone before."

The most irritating Vulcan ever. Though Soval was a close second.
In fact a majority of the Enterprise vulcans were jerks. T'Pau was okay, but I consider her to be a TOS Vulcan since thats when she first appeared.

"...we have waded ankle deep in the ocean of space. Now it's finally time to swim." How nobody laughed at that line is hard to understand.
Archer was supposed to have been given command of Enterprise for being the best captain, not because he was the son of its engine designer.

@nopoet406
In the context of ENT, there was no parameters of what an "Enterprise" Captain should be like. Those parameters were only created after.
