  • Take 1, 2, 3, 3, 5, 6, etc. Those could be his 50th for all we know, but they only show him doing THOSE so of course he might not want to go down all the day at that point.

  • Well, the "proper" way to do them is to go ALL the way down then back up... and he shouldn't be swinging his legs up for momentum either.

    Any reasonably fit person should be able to do pullups though. I do 3 sets of 7 nice and slow with a hold at the top and bottom, I could do more but until my body thinks 7 is easy I'm not doing more.

  • @Nerevar1990 Yes. Everytime I have done one behind the head, it feels wrong and I can feel my neck muscles straining (not in a good way like it's supposed to). Really good way to put unnecessary stress on your neck and shoulders and cause problems later on down the road.

  • Partial reps behind the neck pull ups. Much ado about his form, but it's really not all that bad - he does a good number of pulls with mostly muscle, albeit some momentum. But in the end, looking at his physique, he is probably very familiar with full range pull-ups.

  • This type of pull up is very hard indeed but ultimately pointless. I was commenting on the exercise itself, not whether or not Will does these as part of his daily routine. Behind the neck pull ups limit your range of motion decreasing the workload placed on your lats. Unless you are ridiculously flexible you're opening yourself up to a greater chance of rotator cuff damage or even slipping a disk as you widen your vertebrae.

Behind the neck presses and pulls are hard on the rotator cuff, but as long as you don't have any past shoulder injuries you should be fine. In the film, he was limiting his own range of motion by only going half way down...

I'm not telling people not to do this, merely as I stated before pointing out the inherent risks of an exercise that I believe has more negatives than positives. Might as well work on something like muscle ups instead. Less risk, higher benefits.

  • Pull ups are such a physically taxing exercise that a bit of "cheating" or using your legs to build momentum for the upward portion of the pull, is not necessarily detrimental to strength gains. You can go like that until you have more strength then go full range of motion for a better workout. If you're really weak you may actually NEED to cheat to build preliminary strength necessary to get the most out of a pull up routine.

  • First and foremost: his body looks better than most of the onion-breathed from-Einsteins croaking on this thread, so obviously he has some familiarity with pull ups and/or other exercises. Second, he may very well be doing partials - partial reps, which are a good technique to use when you have already exhausted yourself with full-reps; it can also help with breaking through sticking points.
