  • what an amazing technique. it makes me think i am one such creepy player myself...

  • Wish I knew what the song was so I could practice it.

  • @2008schumi You wouldn't be able to play it. Paganini's 24th Caprice is the 'song'.

  • kamsa-hamnida!

  • agreed with jsbach40- I suffer from Focal dystonia and am trying to regain my right hand coordination by ,in part, using a metronome. if you don;'t like using one, make sure your technique and your timing is flawless.......

  • metronome is for those that dont have the rhythm inside them. its an aid for rhythmless ppl, those who have rhythm can do without it~!

  • @lkjkjhhgf I bet you suck at guitar compared with this young girl. Use the force, the rhythm is inside ha ha ha, you are a dork. No no, seriously, you have rhythm running through your body, you are ridden with rhythm, you need to get is checked out.

  • @colainc90 i bet ur a virgin

  • WE HAVE FOUND THE ASIAN TRAINING CAMP! QUICKLY SNEAK ATTACK THEIR SECRET LEARNING METHODS OR ALL KNOWLEDGE WILL BE LOST!

  • what piece is that.... looks like something i should be mastering now....

  • @ThousandRoseBurial

It´s part of Caprice24 by Nicollo Paganini

  • for fuck sake

  • who is that girl?

  • Well she is good so the metronome must be working haters

  • listen up people, this girl is a robot. she plays with a metronome, as if any musician should study whether he plays the piano/violin/trompet you name it. all musicians are robots. music is robot. KFC is robot. robot is robot. period. robot.

  • @skatastolako please cite more references so that I could analyze and put your inputted data to my storage area. Input error 00000000xc. please reinsert data. thank you.

    system backup memory inserted.

musicians are not robots since some try to compose a tune that they like, wheras a robot cannot really do. Some musicians play pieces by their ear. These musicians are gifted. robots are just following programmed codes so that they could do things like playing, acting etc.

    /output terminated.

  • @skatastolako Well, if some of the posters are correct and this is NOT Su Meng, but a robot put in her place, then all I have to say is that the science of robotics has come a long way since they replaced Paul McCartney with an android back in the sixties.

  • everytime i see this video i instantly feel like playing guitar!

  • I am pretty sure this is Su Meng, a Chinese guitarist, acting as demonstration in a master class put on by Chen Zhi, the famous Chinese instructor being translated into Korean.

Alma guitars sponsored Su Meng in the quartet of the Four Angels and made the guitar you see in the vid, so it wouldn't surprise me if they had a hand in arranging this master class.

I can't hear very well because of sound quality, but I did hear him say Su Meng a few times and I do speak Chinese.

  • this is not speed .... this is fuckin owesome

  • @elmor3eb80 well... hes asian :P i suck

  • very nice...but. do you call the melody?? =)

  • @Rexicano Creating expression by adding Rubato and Vibrato to everything equals to a poor repertoire of expression techniques. A musician should be able to express musicality while Keeping a perfect rhythm! Rubato and Vibrato are to be used only when it makes sense or marked by the author.

  • I don't think she really enjoy playing the guitar,, what do you think?

  • the metronome is one of the best devices a musician can have. it helps with both speed and accuracy. use it!!!!

everybody is not a flemenco or spanish guitarist (nor should or will they be)

use the metronome. that's what it's for.

  • Please somebody... Translate what the teacher says!!!

    Greetings!!!

  • nice melody, how it is called?

  • That's Chinese Guitarist Su Meng. She is in demo of Guitar professor Chen Zhi's seminar in South Korea. She was Chen Zhi's student.

  • in western culture many people think playing precisely in time is the same as playing without emotion. But emotion and mathematics are no contraries. The great philosopher and scientist LEIBNIZ says: "while listening to music the human soul is calculating without knowing that it is calculating" Rexicano has to think about that.

  • @florafox Oooh I like that!

  • why do you think she is a robot?

Because she is practicing with a metronom?

Every good guitarist should have a good rhythm emotion.

Its essencial to play good, you cant play good when you are out of rhythm

  • @cihad2003 i was going to waste a comment on posting my arguement against the people who think it sounds like a robot and metronomes are bad, but im going to just support you instead ;-)

  • @DJBigz1988

    well, thanks

  • @cihad2003 I use a metrnome when trying to build speed but I just play one note for each click and that's for like scales or patterns but I can't really see how her and the metrnome are working together you know?

  • catching up with metronome is basic, rubato and vibrato are advance.

How can you run before you can walk?

  • actually practising with a metronome is an excellent study and don't let anyone tell you any different. Yes, it sounds robotic and yes it sounds soulless but as far as technique goes it's vital to keep consistency in 'programming' the brain. Otherwise a player can become sloppy and develop a lopsided technique. Focal dystonia can also be a result of 'uneven' practise. I'm not saying a performance should be metronomic but certainly for practise it's no bad thing.

  • soul-less robot

  • Try Meng Su's studio recording of this: watch?v=xFzZPT2Omyc

Meng Su plays Paganini - Caprice No. 24 - Virtuoso "Classical Guitar"

  • @Rexicano theres metronomes with swing and triplets. This isn't about learning rythym it has more to do with perfecting guitar technique. you start slow keeping in mind a dozen things to be more efficient then you build it up. Plus practicing with metronomes will make the peice going at the same speed through out because you know you can do the hard parts at the same speed as easy ones, and you won't have a drummer too

  • Theres no such thing as a guitarist using a metronome too much. Guitarist in a jazz setting are a part of the "rhthym section." even right now i regret not using a metronome with the latest bach im learning, that was a mistake :( i can fix it but its gonna take way longer then if I did it right the first time. just i would still try to work in dynamics asap just cause that is really technique too. I go to peabody for classical guitar btw

  • Yes, this is very robotic and not artistic. but this is not a concert, but a class. how can artist even dream expression without this robotic skill? tapping her foot to integrate the beat? hell no, tapping the foot is one of the worst habit when play classical guitar. unlike playing electrlc guitar at a band, classical guitar is not that loud, even a small noise mess up the music.

  • that`s right, rythm is, when the "message" is send, not when played exactly on every bar, except the "message" of the music`s got a robotic sense. But I think it is totally OK to practise SPEED with a metronome. Just to get to know your "limits". You can then take one step back in terms of speed and flourish in musical quality time, polishing your piece to heavenly resonance (the fun).

  • this is pretty insane. every note she played in whatever speed was clean and precise.

  • omg....

  • She's chinese, not korean, and her name is Su Meng. Amazing guitarrist, BTW.

  • Let's show this to Eliot Fisk ... he needs exercises for his Paganini caprice 24 :DD

By the way, good exercise. Thanks.

  • metronome. get one.

    this is awesome

  • bravo! many players who teach guitar as professionals on an academy are on a lower level of playing.

  • That look on her face was very funny. It was as if she were saying: "I know how to practice!"

  • where is the "how to?" dumbass!

    stupid posting!

  • It is that ticking in the background dumbass! It is called a metronome!! If you knew practice technique from your ass you would pick that up instantly....

    Stupid text comment!

  • The Jugglenaut is a moron! Obviously someone who has no patience to sit and discipline himself. Of course it's monotonous to use a metronome, regardless, I am sure she is a hell of a lot faster than Jugglenaut is, and if you think professionals don't use metronomes you're a deeply confused person. No matter what level you use metronomes! Sure anyone can count in their head "evenly" as you say, metronomes perfect it, but I'm sure you would already know that!

  • Indeed, even Barrueco recommends to practice with a metronome.

  • The idea is to use the metronome until you can do everything perfectly at the slowest pace. Not just playing the notes on time but every aspect of technique.

You do it at the super slow speed until you can play it perfectly without concious thought. This is the programming phase.

Then its time to start varying the speed at various tempi.

Metronome is just a programming tool.

  • Comment removed

  • In that case the majority of classical musicians including myself are beginners... Everything in moderation, but metronomic practice is essential for musicians of all levels.

  • Comment removed

  • Then, if the rhythm is extremely stable in your head. Using Rhythmic variations (preferably dotted patterns like heard in this video) is extremely useful, it stabilizes technique and ensures clean execution at higher speeds.

  • That's especially awesome since she has such a short pinky. Much harder to play with a short pinky.

  • yes! i have a short pinky :(

  • That's Su Meng isn't it? And she's Chinese.

  • No es Ji Lie, es Wang Yameng e interpreta partedel capricho 24 de Paganini.

  • woa..what scale is that?? i know its not dorian..

  • it's an excerpt from pagnani's 24th caprice

  • Bravo, excellent techniques. True 5 stars.

  • she is not looks so much happy:-(

  • quien es la chava que interpreta

  • Se llama Li Jei

  • GREAT!

  • 杨雪霏的琴?

  • wht didn't she do rest stroke?? it sounds so thin!that speed is so really easy...sound quality must come first

  • so stupid

  • so ignorant

  • I play with no nails on an awkward position & I'm sure I can play better than your dumbass

  • Is that Paganini Caprice #24?

    Please answer.

  • Yes, that's Pananini Caprice #24 :)

  • are there any tabs of this?:) would love to try it out:p

  • nvm, found it:) Paganini Caprice #24

  • Excellent, his(her, your) domain(control) is fantastic, I congratulate it. Unhappily I do not speak English and this message this one done across a program of translation, really very pretty zullo a strong embrace and desires of congratulations. Congratulations

  • Your very funny..lol

I guess you are a frustrated wannabe guitar player.By the way the rodrigo fandango I played it when I was 21 yrs old. You still did not answer the question old wyse one..DO YOU PLAY as good as you criticize???

    Marcelo Jose Ramirez

  • Right; well then why do you butcher a fairly simple piece like Mudarra's Fantasia # 10 if you're such a Master?

I'd hate to see you do anything like Rodrigo because your rhythm is way off in the Fantasia. Very Sloppy.

I notice someone else mentioned your problem there at that video too. I guess the metronome didn't help you except to race through it; see David Russell play it on YouTube. You could only dream to play that well.

  • I never said I was a Master your being to nice (yeah..right)But you are right about the tempo thats why I;m saying that a metronome is important. Now you never answer my question DO YOU PLAY THE GUITAR?

  • I'm not here to answer your questions; you clearly don't play even simple pieces well but pretend to be able to handle a very difficult piece like Rodrogo's Fandago. You attack my playing without hearing a note just because I say a metronome cannot help a musician internalize rhythm. Pretender; I wouldn't give you a chance to hear me based on the way you act already. Better get back to work on the Muddara; you pretty much suck at it right now.

  • don't get bent out of shame just because we disagree on a the usuage of a metronome, Any way i think your a good guy regarless if you play or not. Take care.

    Marcelo J. Ramirez

  • The metronome is for training only,

    what did you think?

Without it students tend to cheat and smear

  • Playing with a metronome sans Rubato and Vibrato makes one sound like a robot. It's expressionless.

This is the worst sort of musical instruction. Everyone wants to be fast but ignore the musical qualities that make great art. Sounds like someone typing fast. And she looks so unhappy here. Sad.

  • lazy...

  • your obiously not musicaly incline.

    Marcelo Ramirez

  • Musically Inclined...is what you mean but it still means nothing as far as musicianship goes.

Musicians from India and Africa played music without a metronome for centuries...guess they must all have had no inclination to play music?

Maybe think about what I said before you comment with useless statements based on ignorance.

  • I thought alot about replying to you but since you used the word ignorance in our little differences between our opinions.First of all when you play with an metronome is just a form of dicipline in respecting the beat and the tempo of the music. For people like your indians friend well maybe they were born with this gift, just look at Paco de Lucia, but for others we must work on our speed and respecting the music. Please forgive me if this is a useless statement based on IGNORANCE old wyse one!

  • I wrote about your ignorant statement re myself. Maybe you don't respect age and experience but after you yourself have it you will understand that it does mean something.

Many many people use a metronome as a crutch and NEVER develop an inner rhythm. They often also think everything should be as fast as possible. It's a serious and common problem. No one NEEDS a metronome. Let me know when you can play like Paco....and then try and use your own playing as an example.

  • I got it you're a guitar critic cause you yourself can not play the guitar correct?

Do not be over jealous respect the performer and learn from its music. I looked at your profile do you play? lets hear your playing...before you comment on someone using a simple metronome to keep tempo look at yourself old wyse one! is it Rexicano or MEXICANO?? learn how to play then we can talk music.lol..lol

  • For a beginner like you with a big ego; there probably is no help. Argentinians are known all over the Latin world for their giant egos and the way they look down on others and esp. Mexicans...so thanks for the Mexican comment. Now I know where your head is at.

Try playing some serious pieces like Rodrigo's Fandango instead of that stupid Romance and then call yourself accomplished. And no, I'm not Mexican but would be proud to be one.

  • Why dont you guys use email to yell at each other, or just shut up!!!!!!

Go practice or something. People like you poison sites like this with your hate.

  • "Fuck off"?? Intelligent, eloquent response

there friend. Exactly what im talking about.

This place isnt for hateful discussions of

length. Its for commenting on videos.

If you were an intelligent, polite person, you'd realize that. Good day.

  • @Rexicano I don't think you've ever studied music: everybody look unhappy when they're studying. :)

  • @dago0109

    Uh...wrong.

I've studied with the top Classical and Jazz guitarists.

    And taught for 30 years.

Playing like a robot is never a good goal.

All she has to do is tap her foot to INTEGRATE the beat.

    This way, it's always external.

Playing well slowly is actually more of an art.

    Asians used to know;

    Less is More.

  • @Rexicano All right, that's your point of view, but, have you ever looked at your face, or your students, after having being studying for more than two hours? : ) From my point of view, I like to use the metronome, especially with scales and left hand exercises. Everybody has its book ............. and yep, some times I tap with my foot too..... ; )

  • @Rexicano

Well, I saw your video and you are not even close to being an advanced player.

If you practice more than 2 hours straight you are asking for problems with your hands. Taking the fun out of music is NO solution.

And if you think a metronome can teach rhythm you are just fooling yourself.

How many early Blues musicians could even afford a metronome?

How does one then "teach" rubato after playing as a robot?

Masterful Africans and Indians had no metronomes for CENTURIES. None.

    Get REAL.

  • @Rexicano ....no. practicing with a metrnome IMPROVES ones technique.

  • @darkais776

    It sure has not helped you at all;

you play a lot of nonsense. Not only do you sound like a machine...but one that just makes noise and not music. So Pathetic.

  • @Rexicano ....thats y I'll be majoring in music, rite? lol so ur telling me, that a beginner that has NEVER picked up the guitar, will play better than say Steve Vai?????? One must know the way around the guitar, so then it can be easier to express what you have to through the guitar...jackass

  • @darkais776

    Well, I see your major problem right there;

you think Vai is a great musician.

No guitarist I know who plays well thinks VAi is anything more than a jumble of bullshit. But to you speed is everything along with posing like a Guitar God on stage.

And you write with all the skill of a 12 year old.

    You lack basic logic;

No Trad. Blues, Jazz, or Soul musician ever used metronomes and all of them are better than Vai the white kids who want to copy him.

    Grow up Clone.

  • @Rexicano ...im so sorry i dont correct my spelling on a comment....

anyways, I'm a saxophone player as well, and at my high school's jazz band, we were ALWAYS told to practice soemthing with a metronome....how else are u suppose to lock into a drum set??? idiot. without rhythm, u cant follow along... ...if a proffesor at a university, which clearly has greater knowledge than your idiotic mind , says its important to practice with a metronome, than please, go play your dead fathers' cds

  • @Rexicano You only use the metronome in practice, to gain technical skill; when you actually perform, you add in the rubato and stuff. You don't perform a piece as you would to a metronome

  • @raycewest

A metronome cannot give you " technical skill".

what helps is using your own mind and body.

You can also play along with recordings which no teachers ever seem to tell students.

Classical music is being taught in narrow and dumb ways.

Mozart had no metronome and neither did any Soul, Blues or early Jazz musicians in America and that's the best music that ever came out of this country.

But I guess you know better at age 20.

  • @Rexicano All im saying is that it helps, not that it is all that's important

  • Comment removed

  • @dgopaul1

    Your opinion does not interest me;

you've been an adult for....3 years?

I was teaching Classical guitar a decade before you were born.

Get some experience, then give your ridiculous opinion to someone who cares. I don't. ..."proper background "...what nonsense.

  • @Rexicano But you need this to build up your technique. Tommy Emmanuel's timing is perfect, and you cannot say his expressionless.

  • @SweetLittleRnRoller

Great; another teenager with NO EXPERIENCE telling me nonsense.

So, gee whiz...how in the world did all those Indian and African musicians keep the beat for thousands of years?

Use your brain and stop following dumb ideas.

Look at how few Classical musicians cannot swing to the beat at all.

And look at all the Rockers who NEVER used a metronome.

    You make no sense.

  • @Rexicano Your comments are far more immature than those you accuse of being teenagers and adolescents.

  • @bobbygoesbig

And so why are YOu writing to me?

I really needed to hear from another asshole today.

So, prove that anything I've said is factually wrong.

Indians and Africans, who have the most sophisticated rhythm in the world, went for centuries sans metronomes.

You must have a problem with facts.

No run along and write to some other "immature" person.

    I'm not interested, um kay?

  • @Rexicano I think it's a complete aspect of forming a good technique, after mastering and getting good speed and perfect notes you'll surely play with all the emotions without much worry in messing up too much (yes, messing up can also be controlled and used)

  • @quarrelsomeness

Your opinion is not very interesting to me.

  • @Rexicano hilarious. Judging from your previous posts on this video i can tell you ought to learn much. Interesting or not, give some consideration, you might learn a thing or two ;)

  • @Rexicano I disagree, you need to learn the technique first, then speed, THEN you can put emotion into it. She's not training to be a street musician :)

  • @PseudoSarcasm

Well, looking at YOUR video of the beginner piece Spanish Romance...

your words have no value as you yourself play like a fool; a lot worse than most Street Musicians...in fact I would not call you a musician —as music is organized and you spend more time on your ridiculous hairdo.

  • @Rexicano Lol, don't like it when people disagree with you? I was just explaining my view, take care.
