I felt the "acid bath" explanation in ASM was completely unnessesary and somewhat ridiculous. It would have been better left to the imagination I think.

I think they needed to offer some sort of explanation. I think I'd have had the FF rescue him. Maybe Reed hooked him up with an emergency signal? It seems crazy that Peter wouldn't have some backup organised for this type of situation, he's a smart guy who lives a very dangerous life.
