In this scene, Charlton Heston climbes into a Douglas Dauntless, takes off in a Grumman Avenger, flies, sometimes in a Vought Vindicator, sometimes in a Douglas Dauntless, makes the final approach in a Curtiss Helldiver and crashes in a Grumman Panther (a jet!).
During the same flight. He must have been extreamely busy, no wonder he crashed...
I noticed most of that too. But I still loved the movie. It's one of my all time favorites. I saw it when I was a kid and I didn't know a Hellcat from a Wildcat or a Helldiver from a Dauntless. This was way before CGI and there was no way they could've found Devestors to represent American torpedo bombers... I don't think there was any left by the end of the war. So they showed a lot of Avenger footage.
By the way... that is funny. I laughed my ass off when I read your comment because most people wouldn't have noticed and the way the director and effects people couldn't decide what kind of plane Heston was in was ridiculous.
@Ioancuvich Yes, I know they hadn't the budget to use real aircraft. Otherwise, they could have done some minor reconfigurations to a few T-6's to represent Dauntlesses (like they converted aircraft for "Tora!"), for example. Anyhow, I believe it was unnecessary to let Heston lift off in an Avenger, since there were wartime films showing Dauntlesses starting from carriers.
@Ioancuvich Actually, the only original scenes showing aircraft in this movie are two Wildcats (in different, wrong colors) running their engines on a flightdeck, a "Tora Val" making some attacking runs at installations on Midway and some scenes with a PBY Catalina. The scene showing Heston climbing in a Dauntless is a studio shot utilizing a derelict Dauntless airframe (it was later restored to flying condition). The rest are cut outs from other movies, including real war films.
The annals of war at sea present no more intense heart shaking shock than this battle, in which the qualities of the United States Navy and Air Force and the American race shone forth in splendour. The bravery and selfless devotion of the American airmen and sailors and the nerve and skill of their leaders were the foundation of all - Winston Churchill
I appreciate this vid, Midway (with all it's cinematic faults) is one of my favorites. Your description has a few problems. In summer 1942 the fleets were not evenly matched, the J fleet was substantially more numerous and with more carriers. The A Pacific fleet had only 3 carriers operational. It was also not the first battle to extensively use air power, that would be Coral Sea.You also completely left out any mention of the J code having been broken alerting the U.S. of the coming attck.
@Turnback cinematic faults...hmmm maybe like this scene where they cheaped out and used blue screen with dive bomber on the set or maybe use of Tora, Tora , Tora footage.. which because it was so good ( no damn CGI there) was in a couple other movies, or the dialogue..... "you better get hold of yourself tiger or some jap is going to flame you.." Actually, I enjoyed this movie and each time I rewatch it.... seeing the Jap carriers go up in flames is always a glorious thing...
@irish89055 Midway received mixed reviews because of the production value. Using real footage and clips from other films, most of which had nothing to do with Midway, made it look sloppy and hacked together. But, it does receive praise in that it had a great cast and was written in a way to make sense to a viewer who knew nothing about the battle; and no question it was a confusing battle. It left a lot out but at no time was it inaccurate. Could have done w/out the lovers side story.
