a classic song, played by a classic player! beautiful! I'm from Cali, currently living in NC...headed back for a visit and this song has resonated in my soul! thanks so much for posting!
This is the first time I heard the full Jolson song. It seams less trivial than other uses of the song in later times. Perhaps the Mamas and the Papas were inspired by this.
When i hear this i cry -we had no back seat in the 49 plymouth named Buzzie when we drove all the way across the United States to get to Fresno. That's where we got an orange crate for seats in the back.(still tears). It was so hot in Fresno we were scared it was like this everywhere until we got to La Brea Street, Los Angeles. My whole family worked on sets on the old RKO lot (I can't stop crying...this song brings back so many memories of singing this all the way from Pittsburgh PA.
What a great version of this. This may be my favorite Jolson. And such a beautiful phonograph - a wooden horn. I love the way you move the camera around.
Some people thought he WAS. These days musical theare teachers tell us NOT to do as he did --but think about it --it's what made him a star! Audiences LIKE effusive movements and singing. I compare him to rock singers of recent years. They were/are effusive with extravagent body movement/facial expressions/singing. Jolson was KING!
It was considered early Jazz music and the early Jazz affecianados loved. It had elements of blues in the treatment of the notes so it met the criteria to be accepted as Jazz with it's syncopations.
3 of 3 California, Here I Come (yeaaaaaah!) Right back where I started from where bowers of flowers bloom in the spring each morning at dawning birdies sing at everything a sunkissed miss said, Dont be late! thats why I can hardly wait (come on!) open up (open up! open up!) that golden gate California, Here I Come

Thanks for sharing, Adam. What a gorgeous phonograph and horn! It's amazing how good these old acoustic records sound when played back on a quality acoustic machine.

His voice is made for the acoustical record, and actually sounds better through this horn!

Note: Lyrics are slightly different in this version.
How did Jolson do that over-the-top, 200 % singing without sounding corny??

Good analogy. Jolson was a superstar of his day.
