  • What a great way to go - all your pals and neighbours around you - in the warmth of the snug.

  • The snug and select and public bars were ripped out in 1986 after the fire with barmaids and pub manager bet lynch ( soon bet gilroy) Granada had built an outside set and the rovers was redesigned knocking 3 bars into 1. Ena, Minnie and Martha were like sisters. Where 1 was the other 2 were aswell. That was one of 2 deaths seen in the rovers. Ex builder ray Langton died in 2005 after stomach problems. It's interesting the fact that the soaps are like families to us. When a person passes away

  • :) Dennis is returning to Coro this year

  • they dont have the snug anymore do they?

  • they shud have written her out by making her to go spain then she cud have returned at a later date :(

  • is this death a real death caught on camera apparently someone said it was! wots truth!

  • @pianogirlie123 Nope. It was a hard scene for the cast because Lynne Carol was sacked from the show in the cast clear out stupidly brought in with the new producer. The cast struggled because Lynne was such a good actress to work with and her death (in most people's view) was one of the stupidest things they ever did with the street. But yeah Len Fairclough announces she's dead, but the actor couldn't bring himself to say it as everyone knew that was the last scene with Lynne.

  • @pianogirlie123 So i think somewhere in the information you read you got mixed up, i can see how it is easily done when there's so much different information about. But yeah this death was a planned one and the actress lived until 1990 :) hope that cleared it up for you :)

  • Wow thanks for this, Lynne Carol(martha) was my great-grandma. It's a great video considering how old it is!

  • @amyduffy12 Ah really, did you ever get to meet her.

  • Brilliantly played death scene and aftermath. Really moving stuff.

  • 4.59. Is that Susan Jameson?

  • This is very moving - can't imagine ever being moved by a soap now.

  • @markbailey1970 EXACTLY!!!!

  • ....down & 3 you have the continuity anouncer would talk over the credits telling you what next whats say ITV2 ITV3 ITV4

  • when well loved characters die in soaps like Coronation Street the end credits would roll up silant Coroanation Street did this on many ocations lie when Stan Ogdon died (played by Burnard Youens who had passed away himself) Grange Hill in 1989 did this the death of one students being shown at 4:50pm even Dr Who did this at the end of Earthshock but nowadays that wouldn't happen 1 soaps would rolls with theme tune, 2 the credits would get squashed.....

  • I 'think' that Martha's ghost made a few more appearances over the years.

I know that they tried a Ouijia board to try and get into contact with her when her ghost was sighted in the pub after her death.

  • it all went down hill after albert took his cap off

  • The sound is really good on this considering how old it is !

    Has it been remastered?

  • @thekroton i don't think so. Think that's the quality it was :)

  • Martha should have stuck to the Milk Stout!

  • Emily has seen them all come and go.

Great characters back then. The "Street" had a charm of its own.

  • Oh my god that is the saddest episode I have ever seen :( it actually brought tears to my eyes

  • an also who was the pretty girl at 4:58 wow

  • Character is Myra Booth (nee Dickenson). She was in i think 1963 - 1968. On and off. She was married to Jerry Booth, but the couple didn't last long due to financial and other issues. Playd by Susan Jameson. Going off whats the books say about Susan Jameson she seemed like an actress who wanted things to go perfectly.

  • Thank you also for the info on Susan Jameson she just seamd so pretty but strange as it may seam only in the one shot looking at pictures of her from the net i dont like her lol

  • Myrna Booth....wife of Len`s friend Gerry Booth.

  • They Should of Brought her back like let her have the heart attack but survive it

  • They had to kill her off coz they stupidly made the decision to fire her. Much to annoyance of the viewers and the cast.

  • @MusicalsMakeMyWorldS Yeah, but soap characters' deaths on UK soaps are so much better and realistic than the US ones.

They did a fine job here.

  • @EmoDeathStar121 Actually, her ghost did....there was a brief storyline that Martha's ghost was waundering the bar. I don't know if the actress returned or if they just showed brief glimpses of Martha from different angles in which you couldn't see her face.

  • Anyone notice how good the piano accompaniments are? Violet Carson was a wonderful musician. She was the pianist on WIfred Pickles' "Have a Go"; she sang and played (as Auntie Vi) on Children's Hour's "Nursery Sing-Song": and for a time she had her own radio programme "Just Vi" where she played classical selections. Her Chopin was particularly good. She was my inspiration to become a professional musician - and I only wish I could have met her, and thanked her...

  • Brilliantly written, directed and acted. Stupid, stupid decision to kill Martha off, turning a wonderful three who could talk hilariously about anything into a much more limited and sadder duo.

Whoever actually made that decision deprived us of years of enjoyment.

  • It's so sad that they killed her off, she was an excellent character played by the brilliant Lynne Carol. She was devistated apparently when she found out the news that her character was to die. Sadly she found very little work after Coronation Street. Very sad

  • I know. There was also alot of upraor from certain cast members about it. Apparently there was a fued that went on for days over it. If you watch certain epsidoes between when it was announced she was today to her death, certain actors dnt appear

  • You know hearing this reminded me of what happened in the 1950's on the US Soap Opera Guiding Light when they killed off a Character named Kathy Grant and the Fans went furious. They also decided to have the fans determine whether or not Meta Roberts would be convicted or acquitted for murder and in the 1980's when Maureen Bauer found out that her best friend Lillian was having an affair with her husband Ed, she drove off a cliff, died and for 22 Years the fans never forgave Lillian.

  • It was a gritty programme in those days kitchen sink drama at its finest thanks for posting.

  • Martha Longhurst was pissed right up

  • I remember the scene vividly but it must have been on air in the Netherlands later that '64 for I am from '61 no way a three year old can remember this

  • what is the song called that the cast is singing??

  • I think it's Moonlight Bay =)

  • Will anyone try and put on the video of Martha Longhurst's funeral??

  • Unfortunatly it is not released for public VHS/DVD. There are only 8 episodes from each year put on the discs. I am still dying for Martha's Funeral and the Aftermath of her death. However it is impossible to get hold of it. However if anyone contacts Granada and manages to get them please post.

  • Is that the same for the late Val(erie) Barlow nee Tatlock's passing. Her last few minutes are on Youtube, but has anyone got when Kenneth found out and her funeral?

  • Martha's Funearl is on the vhs tape "Minnie Martha and Ena" released by Timelife, great stuff,Ena and Minnie find a record made by Martha and a mysterious stranger.............

  • Really? oo i have to see that. Is the episode after this on it? where Ena puts Martha on her bed

  • No not seen that, the video is very good though, theres a revalation that years ago Martha had an affair in Blackpool.

  • OOO i would love to see this. Where can i get hold of these VHS's ?

  • Coronation Street was sooo different back then to what it is like nowadays.

  • Remarkable to see that again. I was only a little kid when this screen here, about 4 years after it screened in the UK, but I've always remembered that poignant final scene with the glass on the table and the silent credits.

Well written and acted characters who were familiar as 'types' but also different and fallibly human enough to be interesting. That was the key to Coronation Street's early success.

  • Thanks for these. The cast was so upset about Martha being killed off. Violet Carson (Ena) almost left the show in protest. It was a mistake to kill her off, she was such a good contrast to Ena and Minnie. She was one of many who were dumped by the new producers. I also really liked Harry and Concepta.

  • Yes but from what ihave found out Violet wasn't alone. Jennifer Moss, Pat Phoenix and Doris Speed threatened and Anne Cunningham didn't make her 1964 appearence as Linda because she refused to come back.
