While I'm not an aircraft mechanic, oil smoke on start up is typical in radial engine design. Oil enters the combustion chamber when the engine is not running. I suppose even more in the case shown here due to the long intervals between start up???
Also, air cooled engines have looser tolerances and usually smoke more. Back to motorcycles-air cooled BMW twins, my /5 for example, emits a large puff smoke sometimes when the cylinder stops just in the right spot for oil to pass by the rings.
