  • But what happens between 6 and 35 at 7:00!!!

  • His guitar tone sounds like Pat Vegas's (the lead guitarist in the Indian rock band Redbone, at least as Vegas did on the Potlatch album - nice!

  • he looks like steve jobs

  • Comment removed

  • i am addicted ...on this song.

  • something about this is addicting.

  • If only we could all go through life with a spirit as sweetly deftly funkily enlightened as this song is

  • grande John

  • love it.

  • I'm hungry for some Chicken Dog!

  • swagged out in those socks and sandals

  • i just love how open this is. amazing stuff

  • Someone post 'Wabash' I'm far too old to work out how to do it. Please.

  • very very cool! +++

  • koooooooooooooool....!!!!

  • Scofield is definitely funky, but hes not the "king of funk guitar"...there are more than a few times where i find him falling back an a modified be-bop thing a bit too much...still love him more than most funkier guitarists in most situations...(think miles int he 70s, afrobeat, etc.)

  • @marvinkmooneyoz Funny... that's what I like about him, the stylistic twist. Feels very much to me like it's just the way it comes through him both naturally and intellectually. If he were to become "straighter" with the funk -though I appreciate other players who are - I'd feel like I had lost something personal. Scofield's angle just means something rare and solid to me. (None of that is meant to correct or disrespect your comment.)

  • People what you are listening to here is true musicianship not some techno crap rap.

  • as austin powers would say... Groovy Baby!

  • BEGAN

  • AFTER THIS

  • MY LIFE

  • Master

  • This is really all I need in life haha, fuck everything else right?

  • Do you know the date for this performance?

  • John ... amazing John ... Jaco and U = Always the Best in Jazz!

  • Comment removed

  • Zajebiste!

  • my god john and billy look so young here....scofield too

  • That was so dope !!!

  • I saw him in Gent last month and his solo on this song was really amazing! His sound is perfect and his solo's are amazing, he's a real Guitar Hero!

  • I don't care if you listen to Bootsy Collins, pink Floyd, the Dregs, The Carpenters,

Pat Metheny, Deep purple, or johnny Winter.......................it's all good music.

All wrote from the heart. John is a Valuable contribution to music.

    REST IN PEACE T. LAVITZ

  • @randallcaster The Carpenters? From the heart? John is a "valuable contribution?"

This comment is just too kind to have any shape at all... which is OK as far as kindness goes,

but if you can't make SOME distinction in how "heartfelt" or "valuable" different works or performances are without any personal judgement re the musicians or the style, then there's just nothing to say about how "anything" ANY music really is.

  • crazy song, inspired harmony changing as usual from sco and co

  • I quite like this. I also like understatements.

  • not funny,great tune though

  • Doesn't matter what you call it...IT'S GOOD MUSIC!!!!!

  • QUE BRUTAAL!!!

  • funk is just that much funkier when it's jazz-flavored -- or is it the other way around? Scofield's music is so irresistably energized, it's food for the mind, heart, and funk gland

  • @SupernalOne Ah yes, the funk gland. My favorite of all glands.

  • Sco is the MAster of funky guitar. My goodness...!!!

  • Oh shit. This is out of this world. What a great setting for Scofield.

  • I wish the rest of the world appreciated this like we all do

  • This so good. Applause!

  • holy shit. insane jazz right here. scofield is unreal. and mmw great jam funk-jazz. what a great video and what amazing jazz guitar soloing.

  • raised on MMW.. love The Sco.. awww yeah.. thumbs up

  • the bass player has some facial similarities to chet baker!

  • Billy martin the drummer is a sicko as well they are all so good. Woods the bassist.

  • When my elitist music prof, back in the day was talking about guitarists in class, I referenced John Scolfied, and he made a face and said, "I like John Abercrombie." As if John Scofield is some sort of aftherthought or sidenote in Jazz guitar history. People don't get it.

  • mr Scofield = jazz guitar + blues balls = very rare & thus my all time favorite :-)

(MM&W are a superb setting for him BTW)

  • what a sound the bassist is incredible scofild as always and better asl always to

  • medeski is my favorite keys player with jamie cullum.... so great... pls listen to the whole album (John Scofield & MMW - A GoGo) its so great

  • livin legend.. but pls how funny is the look of martin (the drummer) ca. 8:35... so great

  • Communication.

  • nasty!

  • the bass player is a cat named Chris Wood. He plays in a trio with the other two guys besides scofield (billy martin and john medeski) in a band called simply medeski, martin and wood.

  • Who's the bass player??

  • Doesn't he look like Iron Man's nemesis? :)

Great playing, oh great villain! :)

  • that bass opening gives me Wood!

  • pimps

  • MMW Are amazing! I'm so excited that i'm going to there concert this March!

  • M-A-S-T-E-R-P-I-E-C-E!

  • brilliant song

  • Nice video, amazing musicians!!!

  • LOVE IT! THANKS FOR POSTING!

  • It looks like Billy's playing a tin can lid at the start of this tune.

  • @masterexploder83 He is. It's the lid of a jar. He finds rhythm in everything. If he can get it to sound great, he'll play it!

  • Chris Wood got me into upright bass while being just an electric bass guy for so long. Thanks Chris!

  • how can the people just sit there and watch? I'm always dancing and groovin' when i see them live. Even in sitdown venues!

  • What a drummer!!!!

    Martin 4 ever!!!

  • Guys!!! what drummer is this? :|

  • His name is Billy Martin, sick drummer.

  • @terreseco

Oh i had a feeling, but seeing him in this old video i thought it was somebuddy else. Omg! yes, he is Billy Martin. :|

  • These guys make the best jazz albums ever!!! Scofields solo stuff is really good, and MMWs stuff is great too, but together there like your ears are getting a bj :)

  • I love his Artstar models... I had one but the neck was warped beyond belief. I took it to my guitar tech and he told me it would be best to just find another model. I've been searching for another for months now.

  • beautiful

  • I love it when Sco plays with these guys. I like MMW when they do their stuff but its nice to get guitar in there and bring some brown funk in. The composition is actually quite beautiful as well as funky. The chord changes are really nice.

  • thats what i was telling myself at the moment i read it.

shit.............. this surely is the fuckin one. |

    V

  • THIS IT THE FUCKIN SHIT

  • these guys friggin bring it

  • hahaha John Scofield makes the funniest face at 6:50. man what a great guy (and guitarist of course)

  • mmw postponed current tour hope they pick it up again soon hope they do a gig around chicago immediate suburbs soon like college of dupage or similar venue i havent seen them couldve at lolapalooza a year or so ago wish you would come back next time with snake anthony ya know she was no small japanese woman

  • that look at 1:32 is priceless!

  • this is very good especially in the morning ....rhytm is so energetic and melody so optimistic

  • Who plays the bas?

  • Chris Wood

  • even Jaco the king is jealous.

  • chris wood is all over that shit, damn.

  • fucking great song

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

    man this it to much

  • God damn... I'm floating on this ocean of sound. Sco is THE man.

  • Oh so good

  • i remember seeing theirset at 10K a few years back when Trey tried jamming on stage with MMW. he couldn't play their style and he left the stage after like 15 minutes.

  • Trey has only fucked around with mmw pure improv style for the most part.(unlike sco).I have one "special" recording of trey completely freaking out with mmw in the mid 90's.If you want to know which track im talking about im sure I could find it for you.Its classic and trey plays some of the weirdest and most amazing shit I have ever heard him play. It had goosebumps and psychedelic anxiety attack written all over it. It was that good.

On the other hand, Sco is basically mmw's guitarist.

  • that's true about scofield, and i have to give trey credit for stepping a bit out of his traditional safe zone and playing around with jazz guitar

  • Comment removed

  • YAGEMAN Id like to hear that Trey/MMW track..how could I get my hands (or ears) on it?

  • Scofield is an excellent match up with MMW. Enjoyed all I've heard. Thanks for posting. NBBCo.s' "Fat Tire" is GOOD beer.

  • Great group .. Great music .. So groovy

  • ORANJE BOOM IS GOOD BEER!

the music is kinda good too

  • there's only 2 types of music, 1. music that speaks to you 2. music that doesnt speak to you. end of story... labels doesnt mean anything

  • jeesh, college music students are sometimes the most narrow minde and worst musicians there are.

"ITS JAZZ!. No, man ITS funk!, no, man youre a moron, its fusion! fuck you man, its jazz!"

listen and feel it assholes! stop using adjectives as labels.

  • Amen!

  • its called hippie jazz

  • The bass player is Chris Wood of Medeski, Martin and Wood.

  • and I agree with you saxyman but don't reduce yourself to their level by bickering

  • Who's the bassist?

  • How about funk you all. Just shut up and listen.

  • Another great funk quartet vid

    thanks 4 the upload

  • "this isnt funk either...they are just jazz..."

Not true. Scofield started as a post-bop player and then ventured into Jazz-funk. You can clearly hear funk rhythms in this and many of his album.

  • Great vid - awesome jam.

  • THEY ARE ALL INCREDIBLE!!!

  • Love the intro, Chris Wood is incredible.

  • "it's not a funk album jackass"

    jazz-funk

  • this isnt funk either...they are just jazz...

  • I say jazz-funk

  • how about fusioN?

  • Yup, that too.

  • Why does everything need a style? The only reason people don't listen to certain music is because people put everything in a box. "This is rock, or this is jazz, and this is rap." If there were no titles, people would listen for themselves instead of having people tell them what to listen to. Next time someone asks you what you listen to or play, just say, "Music."

  • Your kinda close to a good point, is this funk-fusion jazz-funk funk-jazz typ discussions are pretty useless. But if I tell you I'm going to see a band and ask if you want to come, and you ask me what they play, and I say "Music". You'd probably slap me in the face, or you'd go and find out that it's Pakistanian-folk music, when you expected blues. Categories are there for a reason, simplicity, so to go very deep into the matter is useless, but to get a general idea of what it is, it works.

  • fuck that's orgasmic...

  • ez annyira széééééép

  • COOL...

  • A-Go-Go is one of the best if not THE best funk album of all time!

  • here here good sir

  • it's not a funk album jackass

  • Love it, Billy Martin has that in between swing and straight thing going, sweet.

  • Gods.

    That's what they are.

    Billy Martin is my idol.

  • I was fortunate enough to witness the Johns (Scofield & Medeski) at Pori Jazz. Things worked well with just a guitar and a hammond B-3.

  • Like any great guitarist, Scofield's sound is so unmistakable. Im happy to say I have seen this group (MMSW) multiple times.

  • this is one of my very favorite songs of all time

  • the opening bass is so tasty and look at his emotion. u know he loves it

  • Yes i agree the bass is tasty.

The whole band is perfsct lead by John Scofield. would love to see him play live..

  • that bassist is amazing and scofield is a jazz guitar god and will be a guitar legend. He gets less appreciation than he deserves

  • totally agree

  • I second that. I think it's because he plays shorter lines. He can stretch out on solos when he wants, but he's just as happy playing those neat little fills. He's got great tone, and it's very consistent; his tone always sounds so good, like something from early '70s Jeff Beck.

  • man i couldn't agree more

  • @0pposite0reo Iv'e seen Scofield 4 times and never get tired of him.

  • this song is to nice for words..........

  • oh mr goulash, you need to do some research into your guitar players. His tone has defined his sound for years, i know of no other who plays quite like scofield. And its not technique that got him famous its his feel. A heck of a lot of famous jazz fusion players would probably agree.

  • Scofield plays music!!. Hes got an ear for music!, it isnt about having good or bad technique. And by the way he has a good technique!!

  • Just because Scofield doesn't shred like Steve Vai doesn't mean he has mediocre technique. I'd like to see someone post a video playing licks as syncopated, hip, and original as John here does. This guy grooves. And MMW kick ass too.

  • Goulash, you need to eat some greasy fried okra, while listening to charlie parker, then you might better understand sir scollington

  • Martino, sry

  • BTW ganoush I bet you like Pat Mertino. And then again I bet you're an idiot.

  • Does anyone have any kind of transcription of any song from albums "Ivory Forest" or "Rough House" with Hal Galper????

  • Cretin

  • John is such an inspiration.I walked the same bleus lines over and over through the years. When I was stuck. It was John and a few others that showed me the door.

    Thank You.

  • Wel John is the one who brings the attention, but its Medeski, Martin and, of course the guy on bass, Cris Wood. They did A Gogo together and i think its the best album this far. we will c what the future brings us./Joche

  • man i hate this ! so retarded o and every one that reads this i wunt u to put bad coment on the side right here >>>>>>>>>>>>>>

  • im jokeing i like it alot

  • More music like this please! Anybody, if you can play music, more like this; let's do away with pop music-less facade! Yeah MMW, sweet.

  • what they hell are they on?

  • Wah!!! brilliant!!!

  • Who the hell is that great double-bass player? Brilliant!

  • I really love how john medeski plays when he's with scofield..

  • Terrific to the end.

  • medeski looks crazy.

  • Outstanding piece of music!John Scofield is absolutely "Mr.Cool" on guitar and MMW are terrific also. Thanks for posting!

  • These guys are all monster cats!

  • I love both this live & studio version very very much. I think A Go Go is one of the best jazz funk album ever made.

  • Couldn't agree more. MMW and Scofield go together like PB&J

  • i think that usually when scofield gets together with mmw he kind of overshadows mmw. none the less it is good music.

  • Is it because MMW is not as popular?

  • no, i mean john scofield kind of takes the stage.

  • i mean to me mmw especially medeski takes the stage too but somehow focus is always on scofield as mmw is not as popular..

  • yeah.

  • i'm also more of an MMW fan so maybe its just me.

  • i couldnt agree more with you. one of the best albums in jazz funk history. thanks for this man!

  • all i can say is wow!!

  • Coooooooool!

  • I really think this is my favorite piece of music on YouTube. It is perfect. These guys are such a treat together.
