Scofield is definitely funky, but hes not the "king of funk guitar"...there are more than a few times where i find him falling back an a modified be-bop thing a bit too much...still love him more than most funkier guitarists in most situations...(think miles int he 70s, afrobeat, etc.)
@marvinkmooneyoz Funny... that's what I like about him, the stylistic twist. Feels very much to me like it's just the way it comes through him both naturally and intellectually. If he were to become "straighter" with the funk -though I appreciate other players who are - I'd feel like I had lost something personal. Scofield's angle just means something rare and solid to me. (None of that is meant to correct or disrespect your comment.)
@randallcaster The Carpenters? From the heart? John is a "valuable contribution?"
This comment is just too kind to have any shape at all... which is OK as far as kindness goes,
but if you can't make SOME distinction in how "heartfelt" or "valuable" different works or performances are without any personal judgement re the musicians or the style, then there's just nothing to say about how "anything" ANY music really is.
funk is just that much funkier when it's jazz-flavored -- or is it the other way around? Scofield's music is so irresistably energized, it's food for the mind, heart, and funk gland
When my elitist music prof, back in the day was talking about guitarists in class, I referenced John Scolfied, and he made a face and said, "I like John Abercrombie." As if John Scofield is some sort of aftherthought or sidenote in Jazz guitar history. People don't get it.
When my elitist music prof, back in the day was talking about guitarists in class, I referenced John Scolfied, and he made a face and said, "I like John Abercrombie." As if John Scofield is some sort of aftherthought or sidenote in Jazz guitar history. People don't get it.
the bass player is a cat named Chris Wood. He plays in a trio with the other two guys besides scofield (billy martin and john medeski) in a band called simply medeski, martin and wood.
These guys make the best jazz albums ever!!! Scofields solo stuff is really good, and MMWs stuff is great too, but together there like your ears are getting a bj :)
I love his Artstar models... I had one but the neck was warped beyond belief. I took it to my guitar tech and he told me it would be best to just find another model. I've been searching for another for months now.
I love it when Sco plays with these guys. I like MMW when they do their stuff but its nice to get guitar in there and bring some brown funk in. The composition is actually quite beautiful as well as funky. The chord changes are really nice.
mmw postponed current tour hope they pick it up again soon hope they do a gig around chicago immediate suburbs soon like college of dupage or similar venue i havent seen them couldve at lolapalooza a year or so ago wish you would come back next time with snake anthony ya know she was no small japanese woman
i remember seeing theirset at 10K a few years back when Trey tried jamming on stage with MMW. he couldn't play their style and he left the stage after like 15 minutes.
Trey has only fucked around with mmw pure improv style for the most part.(unlike sco).I have one "special" recording of trey completely freaking out with mmw in the mid 90's.If you want to know which track im talking about im sure I could find it for you.Its classic and trey plays some of the weirdest and most amazing shit I have ever heard him play. It had goosebumps and psychedelic anxiety attack written all over it. It was that good.
On the other hand, Sco is basically mmw's guitarist.
Why does everything need a style? The only reason people don't listen to certain music is because people put everything in a box. "This is rock, or this is jazz, and this is rap." If there were no titles, people would listen for themselves instead of having people tell them what to listen to. Next time someone asks you what you listen to or play, just say, "Music."
Your kinda close to a good point, is this funk-fusion jazz-funk funk-jazz typ discussions are pretty useless. But if I tell you I'm going to see a band and ask if you want to come, and you ask me what they play, and I say "Music". You'd probably slap me in the face, or you'd go and find out that it's Pakistanian-folk music, when you expected blues. Categories are there for a reason, simplicity, so to go very deep into the matter is useless, but to get a general idea of what it is, it works.
I second that. I think it's because he plays shorter lines. He can stretch out on solos when he wants, but he's just as happy playing those neat little fills. He's got great tone, and it's very consistent; his tone always sounds so good, like something from early '70s Jeff Beck.
oh mr goulash, you need to do some research into your guitar players. His tone has defined his sound for years, i know of no other who plays quite like scofield. And its not technique that got him famous its his feel. A heck of a lot of famous jazz fusion players would probably agree.
Just because Scofield doesn't shred like Steve Vai doesn't mean he has mediocre technique. I'd like to see someone post a video playing licks as syncopated, hip, and original as John here does. This guy grooves. And MMW kick ass too.
