The "hole" is the distance between you and the attacker measured by your outstretched fingertips touching his, mainly a six foot space between both of you. If you have to throw something at him then you are outside the hole, and if you extend your arm, like you did, to throw whatever object then you just placed yourself inside the hole. So, if one marks their attacker at the distance you showed then a simple 45o side step and a weapon draw will conquer the situation.
I get the concept of what he's saying, yet the actual application isn't sound. The distance in with he's referencing is outside the "hole", hence if you CCW then you're good to draw your weapon.
in a previous part you said that while you reach for your pistol you look back to see what's behind you at 45 degrees to have an idea if there's any obstacle on where you are going to move to not fall, but now you don't look back. you just grab your pistol and run
I read the comments “ well I would do it different,” bla,bla bla. I personally want to thank you for your time what works for one may not work for another. What some of these people need to do instead of running there mouth with criticism need to stop and think what can be used if not all of it. Yes this technique of throwing something like you wallet to the ground and make him get it and that will give you time to draw.
I don't believe in this tactic. It is one of those self-defense things that sounds all good on paper and in practice, but when the moment arises, it may not work. Hell, what if the bad guy already has a gun on you. I mean, if someone has a gun, they are going to have it on you, ask you for your wallet to create fear and make you subdue. Poor tactic in my opinion.
@Wingman813 Well lets think critically here. I realize your post is 4mths old. What does a robber want.....?....your valuables. If he has picked you out as a "mark" for a mugging he probably is not assuming your armed. Most criminals prefer unarmed victims. So the use of your wallet as a distraction and hell, throw your watch at his feet. Say "here i dont want any trouble, you win, take it" and simply drop the items on the ground. When he goes to collect his spoils you have a moment to act.
You can't throw away your wallet. Firstly, there is money in there... and what if you get away and the guy has your wallet.... that means your ID is in there too and he can just track you and your family down now instead of just you. Throw change at him or something...
Great video Brian. I personally do not agree with your distraction technique, because once Tachypsychia kicks in, your motor skills takes a dive. I prefer to use a vocal distraction, i.e., shout very loud, the moment my hand touches the pistol; I shout stop and then create distance whilst presenting my firearm.
dont know about that even missing the guy would still take his eyes off u for a brief second which would def give u enough time to draw i just got robbed by 3guys walkin to my car was in a bar so wasnt straped but this prolly would have worked if ihad my gun throwing my keys in the direction of the leader would prolly hit him but if not its instinct to get out of the way of an unidentified object thrown in ur direction so u will get some reaction from the guy longer the closer u hit wit throw
i mean in moments like that i agree fine motor skills go to shit but throwing ur keys at sumone within 7 feet of u u should be able to get them close enough for him to duck, back up, side step something and give u enough time to run or draw if ur motor skills go that much to shit i dont know how effective a gun is gonna be in ur hands at that point but i see what ur sayin for sure but thats what trainning is for but i def think throwing sumthin will buy u a sec or two but need a follow up plan
Great Video! An old trick in Texas is.. pull copenhagen out of mouth while reaching for concealed gun, as you throw copenhagen in the attacker's face draw handgun. Next thing they know you have the upper hand and they have a face full of snuff!! I can hit a target with my snuff at 10ft. Snuff can works as well if you don't have a nice wet, juicy dip in already. haha.
I truly believe that you should always be aware of your surroundings. Allowing somebody to get the draw on you is almost a no win situation. True story:
My uncle was a jewelery wholesaler, usually carrying $100M plus worth of jewels in a briefcase. Somebody must have known and tried to jack him. As the perp came towards him, my uncle felt uneasy and put his hand in his jacket where his PPK sits in a shoulder holster. The perp must've known and quickly crossed the street away from my uncle.
Sure you need more than I was in fear for my life. You can't just go around shooting everyone because you are afraid of them. Laws vary from state to state too. So keep that in mind. I am NOT an attorney!
First of all, you shouldn't say anything to the police until your attorney is present and you have had a nights rest! Is throwing a distraction going to kill the bad guy? I don't think so. Key words... I WAS IN FEAR FOR MY LIFE! Why didn't you just run away? Because I was afraid they would shoot or pursue me so I gave them something to think about.
"I WAS IN FEAR FOR MY LIFE!" Shouldn't be your sole basis for shooting someone. Remember, to make sure you have a clean shoot you need to justify: ability, opportunity, and jeopardy.
One question: How do you explain the distraction move to the detective in a shooting situation? Wouldn't the cop try to trap you by asking 'why didn't you run away when you had the chance?' or some other question of that nature? Otherwise awesome vids!! Five Stars!!!!!
for the 1st 3mins his jus repeating the same thing over and over again.. for the teachnique too his just does the same thing for like 5 or 6 times... this whole thing can be summed up in 3mins or less
hey there....I clearly understand the purpose of the technique, out of the line of fire quickly and get out of the distance, but isn t it better for a possible attacker to aim at a person backing out rather than someone moving in on him just sticking the shooting gun in his chest??? psychologically that kills the attacking mindset......if there s more than one opponent of course get out, but a one on one I feel moving in would be better.
Moving in is totally acceptable if done correctly. We teach moving in as well. Sticking the gun to his chest (but ideally not touching it because your gun may become out of battery) will increase your hit ratio. We have another video that shows just that. Moving inside of the attackers gun arm and drawing and shooting. Yes, it pretty much messes the attackers mindset up because they were not expecting that!
Correct me if I am wrong, but moving at a 45 degree angle from your attacker also presents your weak arm to the attacker, providing more cover for your vital areas from the attackers bullets.
Glad to hear that you are beginning to understand our concepts. This is life saving stuff!!! I would not be presenting it if it were not valid and I did not use it myself!
That I would just stand there? The only way I would stand still if I was 100% for sure that it would save my life. Otherwise, I'm moving as fast as possible.
hey jtkratzer..why dont look at some actual footage of armed robberies.. most people just stand there frozen and allow themselves to be victims. atleast this video is showing you options. I got a $100.00 that says you would just stand there.
This may work well in wide open spaces, such as an attack amongst a group of soccer moms picking the kids up, but what about in a parking lot when you're between cars, say about to unlock your door to get in? What about in a convenient store, not a huge shopping mall sized Sheetz, but a cramped little place?
I ask not about the importance of creating distance, but moving backwards in unfamiliar, non-wide open settings.
Actually, we cover that subject on the DVD this information is from. So, in order to get that you would have to purchase the DVD. This is just a sample. Of course you aren't always going to be able to create distance.
It will be a WHILE! We just don't have the time for everything. We are opening up a FOF training center in Dayton, OH & a lot of time is going into that. Sorry.
Not to be judgemental, but why not substitute a sidestep for the cross-step at 4:18 or so as you begin the drawstroke? Falling down because you cross-step with a loaded weapon in hand sounds like a recipe for an ND from a reflexive tightening of your grip even if your finger is out of the trigger guard.
I've mostly only shot rifles and shotguns (hunting) but someone broke into my house this past weekend while I was upstairs. After watching this video, I feel safer and more confident that I could defend myself if I need to. Could you do a video on handgun selection? Being a college guy, living off campus I'm not really sure what size / type would be best.
Brian, good technique. Your movement (and philosophy - armed/unarmed is the same movement) looks like it might have some Japanese budo principles worked in. Good stuff.
Yes, the principles come from Ninjutsu. We wanted to make the video not look too "martial artsie" because most people don't think that they can move like that.
Your videos are great. I make 23k/yr and cant afford formal training at this time...so these really give me ideas to help me run scenarios. I know it doesn't come close to replacing training, but it's better than not thinking about it at all!
I understand that you cannot afford to train with us personally and a lot of people are in the same boat. That is why we made our video very affordable $39.95. You can learn a lot from it. Yes, hands on is best, but a video is the next best thing!
Oh yea, why would one want to worry about having an empty chamber "racking the firearm" well my friends.. that depends on state law. You want to know the real deal contact me. Genius people aren't cops. Cops are rough and tough but lets face it, not Genius. In some states you're firearm has to be legally unloaded. Meaning none in the chamber. An expert would easily follow this with practice.
If you have to carry an empty chamber, DO NOT COUNT ON USING YOUR GUN TO DEFEND YOURSELF!!! You had better have other options available to you, or MOVE to another state that isn't so communist!!!
Hey tactics guy... What happens when the "family member" of the "other guy" decides that he's sad and decides to GOOGLE a person and do a candle light vigil in front of his house?
There are two fight. The physical and the legal. It's part of life. If you are not around to deal with the second, it doesn't matter. Would you rather be alive or dead?
This last tactic shown in the video is something I would not have thought to do so it is another method of self-protection to add to what I have already learned. I think most people appreciate advice such as this and understand that it may or may not be your best option for a given situation.
The "cross step" shown is something all tennis players use to chase down lobs however it needs to be practiced to avoid tripping over your own feet. It's not as easy as it looks.
He's demonstraiting CCW tactics @ stage 3 readiness. Meaning hes carrying w/ a full clip plus one chambered.I would never carry @ stage 3, your own safety could be at stake especially when it comes to fight or flight at the moment of draw.We all know that the mind go's into a state of panic when in that type of high stress situation, If your firearm is stage 3(bullet chambered) one could quite possibly find himself in a world of trouble by skitishly firing the 1st round into his own self.
If you do not carry with one in the chamber then WHY carry it?!!! A gun isn't ready to use unless one is in the chamber. If you have barely enough time to get it out and use it, worrying about racking the slide to get a round in could cost your life!
With all due respect, I must say that I don't agree with the distraction issue. Throwing something at the other guy is more likely to make them mad than it is to distract them, unless it's something that will actually do damage like a throwing knife or a hard-thrown handfull or sack-full of coins. I just don't see that as being a very effective technique, even if you do have a firearm on you. Perhaps there is just something I'm not seeing?
I agree, but that's from the viewpoint of some one who has had this used on him during an airsoft game, I just throw my arm up and move back at 45-50 degrees to cover, using a cross-step, while my right hand goes for my pistol, my left slides back and down for my throwing knife (rubber knife in airsoft games, stainless steel in real life).
hey brian47374 - while alot of the tactics that you show might work for you and not others, it is important that it gets the viewer thinking in order to see what's best for them and to consider what their strengths are
The tactics are situational which are based upon how many attackers, limited direction of movement, etc. These are by NO MEANS your only options! However, creating distance can be a fatal mistake. Moving in on someone MAY be what you need to do in order to save your life. And THAT is why we do what we do. These are just SOME of the tactics we teach on the DVD set.
With all do respect to this instructor, I would encourage anyone attempting these techniques to practice and evaluate them in training against real people simulating common scenarios, prior to putting them into your permanent tool box of TTP's. Research indicates that CCW applictions occur mostly in urban environments: with walls, curbs, and other obstacles. BOTTOM LINE: Train as you fight, and try not to trip.
is there anybody else who finds this funny? I was laughing loud watching this. it is naive. like throwing banana on your attacker. you can also fart and distract him even more :) then you don't need a gun at all.
I accidentally deleted a comment about cross stepping in a gun fight. Look, it is this simple. #1 I have avoided all potential gun fights. #2 If you PRACTICE long enough, it becomes 2nd nature. Please feel free to discuss this matter on our discussion forum where it is MUCH easier to "discuss" things.
I truly hope that you are not referring to the cross stepping!!! Don't knock what you haven't tried. Just because "someone" said not to do it does NOT mean that you shouldn't. I've been doing this for nearly 20 yrs & have YET to fall down even when running using this method!
I will bet my life on cross stepping before sidestepping because if a gun is pointed at you and you sidestep, you aren't going to remain in the fight very long because you don't create distance quickly enough to be safe!
Maybe a little distracting, but he's an excellent speaker and instructor -- no filler words, "uh, um, ya know," etc. He's a professional, but he's not perfect. Get over it.
hey i am interested in going on a gun trainig course my friend and i have been going to the local shooting range and hiring a 9mm and shotgun.they have courses and they are qite pricy so we want to choose the right one.we live in south africa and it takes about two years to gain a gun licence and you really have to motivate it of the turn you down.quite funny actually because we probably have the highest gun realted crime in the world
The techniques seems rather useful...handgun effectiveness is limited...bad thing to plant feet, drop to ground...better to distract & exit while firing from a nose-on oreintation.
The general concept is good because he never gives his back to his opponent but it's unwise to cross feet under stressful conditions. This technical will have minimal effect on multiple assailents. Most people only attack when the odds are in their favor. They have a weapon and you don't. There's 5 of them and one of you. Animals and people are fearful creatures. So this techique will have limited usefulness in real world applications.
Once again... people cross step EVERYDAY unknowingly. It is a VERY valid method of footwork. This is only one technique and could be used against multiple assailants if properly executed. You may distract one while drawing and shooting another. You have simply decreased the number of immediate responders (attackers).
That's good advice. Thanks for the video. You could even toss a shoe off your foot in a pinch (not trying to be funny). What kind of gun do you carry Glock 21?
Nice a scaled down G17 basicly, 15 rd. mag. Do you carry with one in the pipe safty on? I carry a Beretta 9000 .40cal. Looking to take a tactical training class at my local range. What is the most important thing you would say I should take home from the class?
Always carry one in the pipe! As far as what is most important to take away from a class... Something that is going to give you a realistic edge in your survival. The key word there is realistic. In my humble opinion there are very few people who teach realistic and practical methods of survival for civilian applications.
Mindset is THE most important thing in any training course whether or not it is taught in that course. Take your course seriously and train the best you can while you are there!!!
And mindset beyond the class. These techniques could buy the extra second needed to make a difference, but will only be realized by the person paying attention to their surroundings.

3. Return more accurized fire
4. Smoke cigarette.

Chodenberg 4 years ago
If you do not carry with one in the chamber then WHY carry it?!!! A gun isn't ready to use unless one is in the chamber. If you have barely enough time to get it out and use it, worrying about racking the slide to get a round in could cost your life!

Good answer.

Perhaps there is just something I'm not seeing?
paladin1552002 4 years ago
I agree, but that's from the viewpoint of some one who has had this used on him during an airsoft game, I just throw my arm up and move back at 45-50 degrees to cover, using a cross-step, while my right hand goes for my pistol, my left slides back and down for my throwing knife (rubber knife in airsoft games, stainless steel in real life).

Brian are you from Michigan by chance? You look real familiar.

No, but I have family that lives there.
brian47374 4 years ago
hey brian47374 - while alot of the tactics that you show might work for you and not others, it is important that it gets the viewer thinking in order to see what's best for them and to consider what their strengths are
Defender78 4 years ago
The tactics are situational which are based upon how many attackers, limited direction of movement, etc. These are by NO MEANS your only options! However, creating distance can be a fatal mistake. Moving in on someone MAY be what you need to do in order to save your life. And THAT is why we do what we do. These are just SOME of the tactics we teach on the DVD set.

Just to add, hand sanitizer works great. I squirted half a bottle into the eyes of a mugger in Indy, he screamed like a baby.

BOTTOM LINE: Train as you fight, and try not to trip.
mysmokey1 4 years ago
I could not agree MORE! NEVER take the word of ANY instructor. Test it for yourself.
brian47374 4 years ago
is there anybody else who finds this funny? I was laughing loud watching this. it is naive. like throwing banana on your attacker. you can also fart and distract him even more :) then you don't need a gun at all.
PuntoStrategico 4 years ago
I accidentally deleted a comment about cross stepping in a gun fight. Look, it is this simple. #1 I have avoided all potential gun fights. #2 If you PRACTICE long enough, it becomes 2nd nature. Please feel free to discuss this matter on our discussion forum where it is MUCH easier to "discuss" things.
brian47374 4 years ago
Very realistic scenario at the end, naturally the attacker was a Black man.
buzman1985 4 years ago
Don't cross your legs idiot. Good way to trip when you are already in bad situation.
buzman1985 4 years ago
I truly hope that you are not referring to the cross stepping!!! Don't knock what you haven't tried. Just because "someone" said not to do it does NOT mean that you shouldn't. I've been doing this for nearly 20 yrs & have YET to fall down even when running using this method!
brian47374 4 years ago
Have you tried cross stepping while a loaded firearm is pointed at you? Probably not.
buzman1985 4 years ago
I will bet my life on cross stepping before sidestepping because if a gun is pointed at you and you sidestep, you aren't going to remain in the fight very long because you don't create distance quickly enough to be safe!
brian47374 4 years ago
He doesn't know what to do with his hands. He just needs to put them both down.
buzman1985 4 years ago
I can't agree more.
His hands are distracting me.
grandnationalvette 4 years ago
Well, I understand. But are you going to be distracted when an attacker is doing that?
brian47374 4 years ago
looks alot like what you learn in traditional martial arts. albeit with guns.

These are such great videos, thank you for posting them. This stuff saves lives my friend.
Now if I cant just get out of Los Angeles...

The techniques seems rather useful...handgun effectiveness is limited...bad thing to plant feet, drop to ground...better to distract & exit while firing from a nose-on oreintation.
tocaloEddie 4 years ago
Cross step, hell! Throw the distraction, drop to a knee while drawing, and SHOOT the fucker!
spurrit 4 years ago
The general concept is good because he never gives his back to his opponent but it's unwise to cross feet under stressful conditions. This technical will have minimal effect on multiple assailents. Most people only attack when the odds are in their favor. They have a weapon and you don't. There's 5 of them and one of you. Animals and people are fearful creatures. So this techique will have limited usefulness in real world applications.
bayareababe2004 4 years ago
Once again... people cross step EVERYDAY unknowingly. It is a VERY valid method of footwork. This is only one technique and could be used against multiple assailants if properly executed. You may distract one while drawing and shooting another. You have simply decreased the number of immediate responders (attackers).

That's good advice. Thanks for the video. You could even toss a shoe off your foot in a pinch (not trying to be funny). What kind of gun do you carry Glock 21?
gunslinger4u 4 years ago
G19
brian47374 4 years ago
Nice a scaled down G17 basicly, 15 rd. mag. Do you carry with one in the pipe safty on? I carry a Beretta 9000 .40cal. Looking to take a tactical training class at my local range. What is the most important thing you would say I should take home from the class?
gunslinger4u 4 years ago
Always carry one in the pipe! As far as what is most important to take away from a class... Something that is going to give you a realistic edge in your survival. The key word there is realistic. In my humble opinion there are very few people who teach realistic and practical methods of survival for civilian applications.
brian47374 4 years ago
Mindset is THE most important thing in any training course whether or not it is taught in that course. Take your course seriously and train the best you can while you are there!!!
brian47374 4 years ago
And mindset beyond the class. These techniques could buy the extra second needed to make a difference, but will only be realized by the person paying attention to their surroundings.
