  • Personally I prefer Skyclad's version

  • love the bass

  • To those asking what album this is on, it was a bonus track on Remission

  • Don't like Mastodon very much, but this is awesome!!

  • just a fu#$in sick song!

  • very nice and good version

  • God bless you Thin Lizzy !!!!!!!!!

  • HELL YEAH!

  • Mastodon is awesome. Thin Lizzy is awesome. I justwish they Mastodonned this song up to it's fullest potential. You know what I'm talking about. <-- First world complaint.

    900,000 stars regardless.

  • Brann and Troy's legs seem to be doing some MC Eschcer to me.. ..or maybe it's just my bad eyesight. Brann's in front but his foot's behind.

  • Great cover. Phil would be proud!

  • great version

  • that was so fucking awesome.

  • Did they realease their covers as singles? How'd they get out there?

  • @demonchocobo This specific cover was released on a 7" split with American Heritage back in '03

  • Wow thats one of the beauties of mastodon i think, Ive never listened to a band that can do as many different voices as they can. I mean Troy has a shitload of different voices he can do, Brent can do a ton of stuff, Brann is now singing a good amount of leads, and freakin Bill also sings. I cant think of any bands that are more versatile with vocals. Not to mention their l33t instrument skills.

  • @teabag619 ok.

  • @teabag619 not sure if troll or just stupid...

  • @PostMortemBoredom138 even if that is a troll it would be stupid.. so yeah.. :)

  • @teabag619 are you drank? which album are you talking about? black album? the hunter or waht?!

  • @teabag619 what album? crack or the hunter?

  • @teabag619 this isn't even an official album track, it's an extra. and it's a cover, so it's not like their other stuff at all.

  • @teabag619 LOL U mad bro?

  • @teabag619 as retarded as your life is, successful troll is successful. damn you, youtube

  • @teabag619 this isnt even on an album dummy

  • Thin Lizzy would be proud.

  • If Mastodon Put out out a cover album id buy it

  • @Donaldkhaos if any band SHOULD put out a cover album it should be mastodon these guys are fuckin great

  • 12 monkey

  • giving downey a run for his money.

  • @ezrhino100 im a MASSIVE Brian Downey fan, and a drummer myself, and i have to agree... Brann definately has the speed and Downey's finess around the kit, his singles are BLAZING. also the recording and mixing is, for a 'modern' cut, faithful to the Lizzy's era imo- not too clean :)

  • I wonder if Brent's beard makes him any better at geetar.......

  • @Arctodon it does, beard is one of the foundations of great music=)

  • @Arctodon Troy's beard is epic

  • Its always great to see some of the best bands around cover Thin Lizzy. Great cover by these guys and great song to pick. Emerald is one of Lizzys best songs and very underrated.

  • Very good, but for me Lizzy's live version is the essential way to listen to this track.

  • Nowhere near as good as the original in my opinion but still a hell of a lot better than Metallica's version of Whiskey in The Jar. I'll always love this band for linoleum knife though.

  • Can't touch Lizzy's, but good.

  • @tallica4lifegbrtdyDM Come on man..

  • @gavquinn

    What? It's the truth.

  • @tallica4lifegbrtdyDM Yeah fine, but it's not necessary to point that out

  • Raise the horns of glory!

  • not bad at all

  • Wow this is a REALLY good cover of an incredible song to begin with.I love Thin Lizzy and personally think that they are one of the best bands ever, and Mastodon does some serious justice to this song!!!!! Phil would have been proud.

  • what an amazing cover!!! i knew bran would rock the fuck out of the drum fills

  • Wow....I like it. They stayed true to the original with slight tweaks suited to their style. Not bad.

  • good but just not lizzy

  • @patrickgreenblood ...wow...someone can read...well done (successful troll is successful)

  • good cover

  • not as good as the original but its also good..

  • Amazing song, amazing cover!

  • Sounds fucking nice, i thought they were going to fuck this song but nope.. i got a eargasm after listening to this but still Dragonlord's cover was made of pure win.

  • I remember when Mastodon played this live at the Hammerstein Ballroom back in '09, when they were touring with Dethklok. This song made my fucking night, xD.

  • Now I like Mastodon.

  • Who is singing on this song,Brent or Troy?....sounds like Brent to me.....

  • @metalliman34 its Brent, watch the video Mastodon vs Thin Lizzy. They do an acoustic version and Brent sings.

  • @metalliman34 the acoustic version has brent singing and playing guitar, but this is definitely troy's voice on this track

  • @guydudemanperson no it's brent

  • @e7o9 are you positive? that sounds pretty different for brent. either way, the song is fucking awesome :D

  • @e7o9 actually, i take that back...this does kinda sound like brent lol :P

  • I came across this video wanting to hate it. I'm not a massive fan of Thin Lizzy, but Emerald without a doubt is an extremely brilliant song.

Like I said; I really wanted to hate this, but I can't. It's a good cover, original is always going to be the original, though.

  • Very well done.

  • the dual lead bit sounds stupid in there tuning.

  • @CastAirLead a half step lower than lizzy?

  • ya know, i had no idea this was a cover

  • @tagurit187 You'd think Phil and the boys wrote this with Mastodon in mind, perfect tempo and rhythm, right in Mastodon's wheelhouse.

  • Would somebody please link me too mp3 download, it would be much appreciated to have a modern cover of such a classic song to listen to on the road. Cheers

  • Tell you what guys. That is one hell of a cover of my fave song of Thin Lizzies. You guy are a fine tribute to Phil himself.

    Rock on!!!

  • this vid is my 100th fav =P

  • as in the thin lizzie post of this somg 9 people should hang there heads in shame , no make that hang themselves

  • this is bad ass!

he kind of sounds like phil too!

  • I want Troy Sanders!

  • 9 people don't rock as hard as Mastodon...

  • @JollyRogerYoHo One minor problem. Thin Lizzy and Emerald is Irish, Braveheart was about Scotland. Other than that, yeah.

  • It´s impossible to hear this song and not imagine Mel Gibson running in the highlands using a skirt.

  • @JollyRogerYoHo oh god, my nipples they hurt, they hurt when you twist them

  • @SIXCHA they're so tender! don't squeeze them anymore!!

  • @king7299 Just whatever you do don't use those whips on the wall over there! Seriously though, this song is too cool. Just too cool. We don't deserve it.

  • Flawless cover!

For anyone who says Mastodon is only one genre, they can take this and shove it.

  • Nice try, but this is no match for the original...

  • @feidtublec

Fuck off dude. Thats not the point of a cover, to out do the original.

  • Like their acoustic cover 1000 times better.

  • it would be better if they didnt fuck about with the harmony line. it sounds like a band doing a cheap cover of Lizzy. Shame really.

  • great cover

  • I am gonna say that Dragonlord did a better cover of this. Better in every way I feel.

  • @TheBlackWaltz No way, they made it way too metal. Nightwish did the same with their horrible Gary Moore cover

  • this is good, but its way too metal, its meant to be a hard rock song, but thats just my opinion

  • Dragonlord's version is so much more powerful.

  • really.. fuck yeah, this is AWESOME!!!!!

my dad showed me the song by thin lizzy when i was like 12 and taught me and told me it was metal, i didn't believe him until i figured out how music actually evolves

FUCK YEAH that mastadon loves their roots!!!!

  • Righteous work! Drummer thumped it!!!

    *****

  • Dragonlord's cover rocks this.

  • @UberNoodleX Dragonlord's cover is good, especially the guitar solos, but the stupid airy synths during the twin guitar bridge are really cheesy and nearly ruin the song. My vote goes to Mastodon.

  • @polarisrex Hmm ... I loved those synths ...

  • @UberNoodleX Well, in their defense, the whole point of a good cover is to play the song in the band's own style...y'know, not to sound TOO much like the original. After listening to it a few times, Dragonlord's cover is really tight.

  • @polarisrex Both covers are awesome. I love both bands. I just think Eric Peterson is da man.

  • meh

  • Eh? is that Troy or Brent? I cant tell with them singing like this XD Even when doing clean vocals on albums its like they purposely make themselves sound weird

  • @sochioranmyaku I'm pretty sure that's Brent.

  • @koolguy2112 Because he needed the money? Times are tough in case you hadn't noticed

  • @HoosierMF You're retarded. Times aren't hard - people are just too lazy to work these days.

  • @metalwillhatecrew Yeah we're all so lazy that we have to work harder and longer for less money and we still can't afford a house.

  • @metalwillhatecrew fuck you're stupid.

  • I knew mastodon was cool! Doing a cool cover to a legendary band that I love..RIP Philo...

  • @koolguy2112 bcas he was getin paid =P

  • This photo is the tidiest i've ever seen Mastodon look. This cover is awesome.

  • im pretty damn impressed with brent doing the vocals actually, it seems to suit pretty good :)

  • Are the solos on this the same as the ones on the original?

  • @MICKGROHL pretty much, yeah

  • wow this is fuck'n great!

  • Good cover!

  • Amon amarth huh, that'd definently be am awesome cover, them being a melodic death metal band. The vocals I'd be worried about tho

  • WOW!! Fuck yeah! I like both versions!! This rocks!

  • This is like Zeus joining forces with Odin :D:D:D

  • @40mbe no, really!?:O

    Are you serious?

  • @40mbe to defeat the power team of Set and Quetzalcoatl

  • @40mbe More like Odin and Cu Cullain. Or maybe Lugh....

  • @40mbe More like Odin and Cu Cullain. Or maybe Lugh....

  • @40mbe GOMNOOOO

  • The hardest part of covering Lizzy is doing Phil's vocals. They are by no means technically brilliant...but Phil had this quality to his voice that is hard to duplicate

  • have they released this? for purchas?

  • @SIXCHA Remission special edition

  • Not a bad cover, but not a patch on the original. I'd love to hear Amon Amarth take a shot at this song.

  • I don't understand the complaints. This is a very faithful cover from the vocals to the guitar tone. Shows how much Mastodon respects Thin Lizzy

  • Brann is a god even among other gods.

  • Spot on cover, vocals, guitar, bass, drums, fucking amazing, i dont know what everyone is bitching about, i think the lizzy fans are jelous of mastodon and the mastodon fans are jelous of lizzy, stfu and stop ruining a real fans day. love em both though \m/

  • Geez! Some snarky comments. Good cover bad cover. Whatever. If they have a blast playing it then that's all that matters. Too many people are trying to take the fun out of music. Everyone's a fucking critic.

  • i cannot stop listening to this song.

  • The version of Dragonlord is better, but this is good too.=)

  • @Ilharess84 Yes. You are exactly right. Dragonlord's rocks.

  • @MasterofSpiders u are a fail for liking Machine Head, they are fucking over-rated

  • Screw you, Machine Head is awesome!

  • @DarkerFilth dude, machine head is one of the few bands that can cover Iron maiden and not have it be an abomination

  • THIS FUCKIN ROCKS THIN LIZZY RULES

  • @koolguy2112

    Money is a powerfull motivator.

IMO Its not their place to cover a tune about the war in Ireland and a bit more effort is required before you could call it a tribute to thin lizzy. A bunch of 16 yr olds couldve played the thing note for note from the sheet music.

  • @ArdRi79 to bad your opinion means jack shit troll. you don't like it don't come on here and listen to it.

  • fuck fuck yeah ! thin mastolizzy !_!!!

  • Can anyone send me this mp3?

  • who is singin' ? Brent?

  • @FatMetalFan yup

  • @Jimihendrix6699 Thank You very much man.

  • @FatMetalFan no problem bro

  • As a huge Lizzy fan just getting into Mastodon: FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK. :D

  • i gotta say i love when brent sings like this, i meant i think its awesome when mastodon plays ther songs and sings how they do but i think i might prefer when brent sings like this.

  • @Jimihendrix6699 See: Naked Burn

  • @h3rsh3y94 i know. i have the album.

  • @h3rsh3y94 <--This. X10.

  • this makes me feel old i saw this done by lizzy in 1979 . but this is not bad i am just glad that younger band are playing lizzy well done .if it was bad it would be better then owt GARY MOORE as ever done he is the biggest asshole in music all gary moore dose is treat fans like shit

  • amazing cover

  • i love this damn song and they cover it perfect.

  • What respectful geniuses! That is the closest version I have ever heard, All due respect Mastodon, even more so for covering the Mighty Thin Lizzy! You can hear Lizzy influences throughout your albums!! Well Done!

  • He has a slight Ozzy style voice in this cover

  • That is my favorite Thin Lizzy song. I'm glad Mastodon did a cover. Now where the hell do I find this on CD?

  • Remission special edition.

  • Thanks, You're awesome

  • Why thank you. :)

  • or if you are looking for a hard copy, its on the split with american heritage, from '03

  • @whiked2112 its on the march of the fire ants ep aswell

  • Great cover they really make the riff their own, R.I.P. Phil

  • lol i know what u mean about the weird harmonies in this one, it like dropped the energy of the song a bit and threw me off. idk about mastodon guitarist being better then thin lizzys but thats just me cuz i dont know much mastodon songs but i dotn think theyd ever mention them being better then thin lizzy

amazing song tho either way, wish phill was still around and i could cuddle him and smell him and pet his irish fro :D

  • I would never say they are better than Thin Lizzy... Yet... they are a young bands till and well on their way to being legendary, to me, being 17 and growing up with them they already are, i would highly suggest you go out and get Crack The Skye, by far their best and most interesting musical effort yet

  • they are just making it their own, whats the point of covering a song and playing it exactly the same as the original and making it sound the same.

  • @TheBreakersusa im surprised brent and bill just did octaves there it is a little disappointing. if they did the original harmonies it would be such an amazing cover.

  • the drumming is simply amazing!!! he just rips it!! wow
