so how long are we gonna be kept waiting for your version Quentin?? I am sure you can make a good version of it. its about time and don't know of any one as qualified to do it as you!
I honestly didn't notice any particular racism is Travis' character, but I will say that's open to interpretation. I think that Travis is exactly what you see-he's an extreme non conformist, brutally honest and powerful decorum. As far as the pimps and gang member showdowns he has where they are black, I never considered that to be racially charged, as travis does narrate, "some cabbies didn't take spooks. I didn't care."
@poopmcscoopface i agree. enviroment plays a huge factor in a outlook. It's one thing to say, I don't wanna be this way, it's another thing to react to something. I assume it goes both ways.
Well, he did shoot a black guy first, but he didn't kill him, he just incapacitated him. Watch closely when the clerk starts beating him. He's still alive, but only slightly.
i really think that Taxi Driver is just a bit overrated. if you compare it to Goodfellas or The Departed.. it really falls WAY short.. i know this is my opinion, but ....i had to say it. honestly, i prefer Analyze This to Taxi Driver
I never got the impression that Travis was an outright racist.. No more so than many other white working class people at the time. He never specifies that the scum he's trying to get rid of is of any particular race, Travis despises "scum". Not any paticular race, if anything, he appears skeptic of other races.
@Struckworld True, but I'm right. Travis did kill a black man, even if he was robbing a convenience store. Plus he killed the black man when, shooting from behind, he could've just immobilised him.
I agree he is a racist, but the film focuses more on the "us vs them" sociological ideas. And how we look upon bums, pimps, whores, thieves, and minorities as scum. And how easily we can feel hatred towards other human beings. It is relevant in history and today.
Couldn't agree more with Tarantino. If Keitel's character was black, this movie would be boycotted. People would hate it. A white pimp, contrivance sure, but a smart choice.
Not only did Harvey Keitel's portrayal of the pimp offset the film's could-be "flaw," but the pimp in the script was, in fact, black. Harvey insisted to Marty that he play the pimp, though.
@grindhouse141 "O.K., can we please stop with the "is or isn't Travis a racist." Some think he is, some think he isn't. Lets move on. " I have only read this particular comment, sorry.
@flandersfails No... the most important question is... was the last few scenes a dream sequence? Was Travis imagining redemption as he lay dying? Got you.
@grindhouse141 No. Travis Bickle. He's a racist and a fascist. I say that because he tells the senator when he's riding his cab that someone should wiping away all of the trash.
@jimsty19889507 Yeah, Scorsese definately. I see we share the same favorite movie. Also, I drank the Chris Nolan Kool-Aid. I'm a believer in him. And Pulp Fiction is in my top 3 movies ever. I love talking with other movie fans. Too bad we met up the way we did, but only Scorsese could bring people of differing opinions on certain subjects and find the common ground between the two. It's the power of movies man!! LOL
@jimsty19889507 Also, to get off this subject and bring a little peace to the page, who's your favorite director? Let's talk about something a little less heavy :)
@jimsty19889507 I understand what you're saying. I don't want to ban all bad words, I just think people with any ounce of decorum would not want to say them, considering the history of those words, intent or not. Also, it just makes me angry when I see people (especially white) defending vigorously their right to say the word nigger, but don't have the same fight in them when it comes to other epithets. Anyway, I understand your point. Thank you for clarifying it.
All the people Travis kills including Harvey Keitel's character were black in Paul Schrader's original script but Scorsese and Shrader thought the film would come off as a rasict if they remained black so they changed it.
@jimsty19889507 If your black friend is not offended by your use of the word, then more power to him (or her). You have the absolute right to use any word you want, but there are certain words that are loaded and shouldn't ever be used. I wonder are you this liberal with other epithets such as fag, dyke, kike, bitch, retard, chink, jap, gook, wop, spic, wetback, etc.? Or is it just the black epithet you want to use? I'm not looking for an argument I seriously want to know.
@jimsty19889507 Yes, the word is offensive in New York, Alabama, London, Paris, Japan, anywhere. Now, certain people may not be offended by it, but that is their call. The word has a racist history and I just do not understand why white people (I'm assuming you're white or at least not black) fight so hard to use that word when there are thousands of other words to choose from.
@jimsty19889507 It doesn't matter what decade, the word nigger has always been racist, especially when coming from the mouth of someone who is not black. PC or not. I would say it was even more touchy in the early 70's considering blacks had just come from the Civil Rights Movement, having to deal with whites demeaning them with little they could do about it until then.
i thought that harvey keitel stood out like a sore thumb in the pimp role.a jewish pimp!:-) i like keitel as an actor and i like most of his movies.i sow T.D long after reservoir dogs,Thelma & Louise,Bad Lieutenant.when i sow him as the pimp in T.D i just laughed cause he looked like a clown.it was very out of place with the whole tone of the film i think.
well he is not a racist because he kills the people regardless of the color but regarding their attitudes and aproaching life and people. he says it would be a flaw if wasnt for hayve keitel perfomance beacuse it would contradict about what travis feels..but thats the exacvtly reason why hes not a racist it doesnt have to do with harvey perfomance, which is really great
well actually schrader has admitted that he wrote Travis as a racist, and that originally Keitel's character was a black pimp, but scorsese felt the movie would come off as racist if they had made him black and had Travis gunning him down after the less than stellar scope they show black people through in the film
So the only proof we have of Travis Bickle being a racist is that he hates the criminals and scum of New York (also politicians later) and since the majority of those pimps, drugdealers etc are not w.a.s.p's he therefore by default must be a racist?
I don't like the Italian Mafia, corrupt politicians in Italy and media mogul presidents like Silvio Berlusconi. So does that automatically mean I hate Italians? Some overly sensitive and reactionary Italian probably would blame me for that. That's all
@kumathebulldog@kumathebulldog Very well then, the creators of the film intended Travis to seem like a racist. I argue that they did a poor job of that: none of Travis' behavior in the film indicates that he's a racist. His contempt for the people he encounters seem very much because they're criminals.
@dcolby5 Dude their not allegations their facts. Scorsese & Schrader say as much. And Schrader created the damn character so I think he knows what he's talking about......
@grindhouse141 I agree. If people didn't keep on talking about the racism in the film, it would obviously have lost some of its relevance. But racism still exists to this day so obviously it hasnt lost its relevance...
Personally, I don't view Travis as racist, but I can see that he might be grouping black people in the same league as pimps, whores, scum, thieves, and yeah, people who sleep with other people's wives.
@dcolby5 It's not only the pimps though, when he steps outside to chat with Wizard for some advice he sees some black youth/gang walking past, and looks at them with disgust, it's also shot in slight slow motion, and if anybody has listened to the Raging Bull commentary Scorsese explains he liked using slow motion to show the intensity and anger, mostly used in looking at Vicky's actions, and in scenes with Frankie Vincent.
@gnilayazhyzha Well, first off he refers to them several times a niggers. It's also the way he looks at them. Like the scene in the restaurant at the beginning when he's staring at those pimps with sheer hatred.
Well if that's the case how come he has no problem taking "spooks" in his taxi? "Don't make no difference to me." He notices that some of his collegues refuse to drive blacks, but to him it doesn't matter, he just will drive anybody regardless of race, social class, background or personality.
A racist wouldn't notice blacks being ignored by his fellow taxi drivers. At the end of the movie he diverts his hate towards Harvey Keitel's pimp character.
@grindhouse141 is it possible to translate this comments from English into Spanish?? or just subtitle in english??, or when I can download the transcription? I couldn't understand all the video and I'm very interested in the Tarantino's comments on Taxi Driver because in fact, it's one of the best movies I have ever seen, one of my favourites definetly and also he's a huge filmmaker, well, i'm peruvian, and although I know some of English, I can't get all the words in the audio as I'd like it
@grindhouse141 no, it would be too much,.. i thought maybe there would be some web on the internet where it wold be the transcription or with subtitles, i don't know...
@WonderBread006 What u say is true but I, a white guy, love it. Maybe it's a nostalgic thing since it had a big impact on me when I first saw it at age 10 but I just watched the blu ray of it and I love it just as much. Idk, I think it just clicks with some people.
I found this novel called The Suicide Game that feels like a Tarantino movie and even has a character that seems to be Tarantino himself. It features a black hitman, a murderous priest, and a gay phone sex operator. I downloaded it for free at smashwords . com and it was awesome.
You don't get his taste? He doesn't critic like he has a stick up his ass... Team America had an awesome moral to the story, Dicks, Pussies & Assholes... LOL
@xAPxSKORP1QN Hey I like Team America as much as the next guy but I was really talking about some of the other films he praises like Speed. That was horrible and I can't understand why he likes it.
@CobainLennon8094 I'm sorry , but I don't think you got the point of that list, it's not only about movies that he liked or loved , but also movies that he which he had directed. Though you're entitled to your opinion as anyone, but just wanted to say that.
@CobainLennon8094 i think he has a good taste in films actually, if you look at most directors' top 10 favourite films they always pick the same films like citizen kane and casablanca etc. but qt's favourites are the good the bad and the ugly, his girl friday, rio bravo and taxi driver, so he has his own unique tastes i think the way those films influence them his what makes his films so unique
@8down10 The list I was talking about was his 20 since 1992. It was pretty bad. I was all for him putting Dazed and Confused. Proud actually. He just didn't mention any Scoresese movies no Departed no Coen brother films. It's hard to argue with someones own taste. I just don't think he's a good film critic. He's just such a weird full of himself creepy guy to me too. He is a very good director though.
@CobainLennon8094 So... TAXI DRIVER is NOT an Scorsese movie? and he has weird taste cuz he loves Asian movies? Like J.S.A or BATTLE ROYALE or THE BLADE(The first 2 are Masterpieces BTW). He also mentioned FIGHT CLUB,etc. At least he's list is not full of Cliche movies like everyone elses list. But gotta agree that when he mentioned SPEED asone of his favorites, I literally LOL'd.
@CobainLennon8094 They're HIS top 20 choices. I think it would have been a mediocre and banal list if he chose the obvious contenders; which although deserve credit, are not necessarily his 'favourite' films. I'm sure your list of top 20 films would be much better no doubt?
@CobainLennon8094 its not the best movies that have come out since he started directing, it's his favorite. the ones that he enjoys watching as a viewer, not as a filmmaker. in terms of film making, he would have a far different list.
okay if this is one of his favorite movies then he should remember that the first person travis kills is a blackman in the minimart, and i love tarantino, but how the hell could he forget that!??? he should watch it again lol!
First 3-4 time I watched Taxi Driver (my favorite movie), I didn't notice that Trivis was racist. I thought the looks were because those mpeople were the "scum" he was refering to (and they just happened to be black). I think the movie went in the direction of "I hate scum" more than "I hate blacks". I am not dening that he is racist, just saying that the hatred of scum, assassination, lonelliness, isolationism, etc are more significate. Also, reallycool that Taxi Driver is on QT top 10 film list
@Flood7Productions yeah but that's not what he's talking about. That's not the premeditated explosion of violence. That's the spontaneous slip into the ease of violence. But yeah, you're right; Q should've mentioned that.
@Flood7Productions He was supposed to kill more black people according to the script. The role of Jodie Foster's pimp was written as a black guy but Keitel wanted to play him so the role was altered and expanded. The other reason why he doesn't kill more black people is because the theme of racism was believed to be too controversial. It's still there, you can feel Travis's disgust towards the black pimps but it's not as prominent.
The greatest films ever made about loneliness are Taxi Driver and Midnight Cowboy.

@CobainLennon8094 Agreed, well, not about the douche part, but while I love Quentin's films, I've never understood his taste in them.

@grindhouse141

Toughguystudios1 6 months ago
@CobainLennon8094 Yeah he even picked that new Star Trek movie as one of the best in the last few years. OMG!
haliastales 6 months ago
@CobainLennon8094 its not the best movies that have come out since he started directing, it's his favorite. the ones that he enjoys watching as a viewer, not as a filmmaker. in terms of film making, he would have a far different list.

I love QT, but shame on him for not even *mentioning* Paul Schrader.

okay if this is one of his favorite movies then he should remember that the first person travis kills is a blackman in the minimart, and i love tarantino, but how the hell could he forget that!??? he should watch it again lol!

He shoots a black guy robbing a store. QT, yer wrong bro.
Flood7Productions 11 months ago
@Flood7Productions yeah but that's not what he's talking about. That's not the premeditated explosion of violence. That's the spontaneous slip into the ease of violence. But yeah, you're right; Q should've mentioned that.
ryanfoley123 10 months ago 4
@Flood7Productions He was supposed to kill more black people according to the script. The role of Jodie Foster's pimp was written as a black guy but Keitel wanted to play him so the role was altered and expanded. The other reason why he doesn't kill more black people is because the theme of racism was believed to be too controversial. It's still there, you can feel Travis's disgust towards the black pimps but it's not as prominent.
