  • There is NO ONE ON THE OPERATIC STAGE TODAY WHO CAN COMPARE

That is the reason for sumptuous sets, costumes, lighting, translations and silly staging

None cover for the central issue, that of the Art of Singing

  • Fabulous recording. Amazing technique,we can learn so much from these singers, wonderful, thank you!

  • Superb voice, style, articulation, dramatic sense.

    When did he retire?

  • one of the greats.

  • Oh yes, i see what you mean ...oh well...back to the drawing board ):

  • This is a real treat! I am familiar with Nissen's contemporaries but had never actually heard Nissen himself. Wonderful voice and technique. Thanks to Barbara for the share.

  • Fabulous aria! My German is not all that good & I could understand every word! Wow - I agree with you, Martin. Wonderful voice for the Dutchman. Terrific technique up & down the registers. And wonderful expression! Marvelous - thanks :)

  • Glad you like it!

  • His German still has problems, the end consonance of most words were missing. But I agree with you that he has a very clear voice.

  • No, the consonance of the words are NOT missing ;-) . It's the problem of the bad quality of the youtube-video, not a problem from the singer.

  • Das ist die eindrucksvollste Version, die ich von diesem Monolog kenne.

(Von Decca gibt bzw. gab es eine 4-CD-Sammlung mit uralten Wagner-Stücken)

  • Thank you. Wonderful.

  • I have never heard this before, but I enjoyed it. A very clean voice. I personally prefer the dark tone of London and Hotter, but this guy was definitely good.

  • I am glad you liked it. I particularly like the heroic quality of Nissen's voice.

From the videos you posted as well as from your own recordings, I already figured that you like dark voices. I like them too, but I would'nt say that I prefer them. For me, Hotter is more of a Wotan than a Dutchman.

  • @cameratamaestro

Hotter was not always _so_ dark... In his 1943 recording of the dutchmans role, he sounds like a real bass-baryton. Nissen was darker in this time.

The amazing thing is, that Nissen and Hotter sang both in the 40s at the Munich Opera...
