  • Ooooooh, that song that comes in right at the end of the video sounds pretty magnificent. I'd love to see/hear it in full!

  • Why the need to compare artist? Enjoy to listen to the one that is playing.

  • Guthrie Govan of drums over here

  • What song are they playing before he goes into the solo? Anyone know?

  • He's the Swedish Zach Hill.

  • kinda reminds me of like a fusion ginger baker.

  • @ultimatefighter187

    shit lol

  • No one else can do this. I'm certain about it. He is amazing and an awesome teacher as well.

  • don't look down on people who don't like this, it's fully understandable.

I would like to think that he plays an improvised solo like the way a pianist would do.

Removing the borders between instruments, he's playing in no special time but in tune, like the pianist for example, and he's wailing like a singer but on the drums.

I don't really like listening to this, but i think of what i've written when i hear it.

  • Where can I get the whole concert???

  • OR..... maybe it's (drum roll please) hehe... SUBJECTIVE. God, you jazz snobs get on my fucking nerves.

  • This dude shits on Tomas Haake.

  • Comment removed

  • there is a lot of phrasing going on here. your problem is that you are listening for a groove. don't do this. take a broader look (a broader listen?) and you'll hear huge "phrases" being done to time. you'll be pleasantly surprised at how musical it is!

  • yeah i guess this kind of music, or drumming in this video requires more then just sitting down and tapping your foot to, if you cant hear the musical genius behind this then its prob just a little too much for your short attention span.

  • joe and morgan are different drummers.. both representing totally different eras in music and drumming. joe comes from a much older generation and is fantastic!

morgan is a younger breed and has different ideas.. i wouldnt champion one over the other because they're so different.

i think morgans phrasing in this solo is completely unique.. the spaces he's finding are very interesting. i dont think his intention is to swing in any conventional sense of the word.

  • Your ears are too dry to hear it...

  • man im not a drummer and even i know its not random..

  • Who are the others in the band? excluding the orchestra

  • man i dont realy see buddy as much of an artist or a creator of new music . He was a sick drummer who worked on his technique all day. but i would never even for a second say he had half the talent of a true artist like morgan , fast hands and tricks and drum chops dont make you an artist they make a a preformer . being able to think with a mind like morgans , thats being an artist . few drummers think beyond the rudiments. thats all buddy did was spam what he knew

  • im sorry i cant agree with you man buddy may have had a more devoloped technique but this guy is WAY more talented i belive his creativity is far beyonds buddy . buddys solos were all technical and were devoloped in a very mathimatical way. totally just spamed uber fast rudiments . morgan thinks with a artists mind and can make the drumset sound any way he wants it to his emotions are totally one with his playing sol niger within ? mats and morgan band ? check that stuff out dude

  • If buddy was still living hed be just as good if not better than morgan. and im sure if you asked morgan hed tell you buddy rich was amazing.

  • I don't see why a jazz drummer should be compared to a contemporary one. It's needless to argue who's better anyway, they represent totally different styles. It's only up to our personal preference.

  • @Khempejjer contemporary jazz!

  • Yet another pointless comparison of visionary artists from DIFFERENT TIME PERIODS.

  • He plays like Jimmy Carl Black. Just like old Zappa recordings.

  • what concert is this or dvd?

  • nice =P

  • WAKA JAWAKA!

  • Morgan literally bent time itself.

was that fuckin Paul Simon on bass? haha

  • I'm in a Jazz history class currently and after learning and listening to buddy rich. His ego was way bigger than his playing....yeah sure he was the best, for his time. But people need to open their eyes to more abstract and complex playing like Morgan does. Morgan is way more expressive and in depth with his knowledge and feel for music.

  • disagree....Buddy was a major ASSHOLE, but he could do anything. If he played today in the current idioms...he would still be the best. Hes like Babe Ruth.

  • @CarroT0P IT's the same for every of artistsOf course in the past we had a very good musicians (where in same case their fame were raised by ppls),but we really need to start accept new concepts and ideas

  • genial...

  • I find it extremely annoying that they are either getting a closeup of his face, or one single drum almost the whole time

  • the woman at 2:06 is not having a good time, looks as if she was saying: damn hippie! wear a suit and get a hair cut and then come back!

    morgan rules!

    swedish musicians rule

  • i m immensly proud of my roots, only if you check out you get tonns of good sweedish bands. Most known are opeth, Meshuggah, In Flames,The Haunted and At The Gates. All amazing

  • yeah i live in north america i have definitly noticed that eurpoe in general has higher caliber muscians

  • @josedrumer don't agree - she's getting into the groove, watch that head nod throughout the solo

  • Ouch...

  • Amazing drummer!

  • Damn, he's just insane... Oo'

  • wow....hes so good

  • Does anyone know the title of the full version of this piece?

  • i think the title is wakawa jawaka by frank zappa. it is on "zappas universe". well worth a look or hear.

  • Waka/Jawaka from the same titled album

  • I really can't fathom what's going on here, but I'm pretty sure if I could understand jazz solos a little better I'd know that it's awesome. The look on the lady's face is priceless!

  • I love jazz but normally think drum solos are a complete waste of time, but this is awesome. Superb.

  • Fantastic drummer. This was with Banned From Utopia and Joel Thome with Ike Willis, Tom Fowler, Tommy Mars... But personally I think Morgan plays even better today, check out the last Mats/Morgan CD/DVD release "HeatBeats Live", it's pure magic.

  • great musician, but i find it a bit disrespectful with the other musicians, that Morgan dresses so casual, but i guess thats not what really matters

  • HA.

  • no, it doesn't matter.

  • Drummers having the most physically active role in a live musical composition, can't be hindered by a three piece suit. But at least he could have got a shave and a haircut, haha! He looks like he rolled out of bed, then laid down a stellar drum track.

  • buddy rich did it all the time 0.o

but yeah his orange shirt was the first thing i noticed

  • I think this is more inovative then anything I've ever heard from Buddy Rich actually

  • i would have to say in terms of talent he is way beyond buddy rich

  • No fucking way dude. Hes good...but no Buddy.

  • i think its silly to have a uniform for music, have enough of that at work and at school ;)

  • The looks on the conductor & other musicians faces say it all.

  • He palyed at the local jazz club in my town yesterday :) (small town in sweden) He was boss.

  • Hey look its Borat at 0:06 =P Morgan Agren is awesome =)

  • todo mundo arrumado só ele de roupa laranja kkk

  • Man the speed of his kick and ride together sound like a machine gun!

  • If anyone can tell me who that orchestra is, and how i can see more of them playing this set, please message me! lovelove

  • Awsome! Is Morgan still the best out there? This video was taped some year or years back. So is he?

  • I support all drummers with passion. 5 stars

  • the Afroman is, i believe...Ike Willis from Zappa fame..isn't it????

  • yepp its ike

  • sweet. i was wondering who that guy was. any idea who the white lad next to him at 3:40 is?

  • the black guy at the end is like thats my muh fuckn nuga

  • HAHAHA i think it's funny how everyone looks so confused and the one afro black dude seems to know exactly what that crazy swed is doing.

  • HA! I was thinking the same... classical dudes: go play straight 8ths. in 4/4 if you want, but down frown the man in the drumkit

  • hahaha

  • "Dude, if you think Morgan Agren sounds like he is falling down the stairs then you really know nothing about music and probably not much in general. Go listen to Green Day or something a little easier to follow."

    lmfao...so true

  • this superhuman plays in the "Mats & Morgan band", check it out u should

  • brilhante!

  • what band is this incredible fellow in? This is so unique and freeform, yet incredibly technical and fluid too. I want to know more, thanks.

  • agren also done the drumming for fredrik thordendal's solo album "sol niger within." check that out if you can get your hands on it, it's an amazing album.

  • thats a crazy solo man. I don't understand a bit of it....

  • i think Morgan sometimes can't even understand what he's playing :D

  • I can see he's one of the best drummers out there..but I find it really difficult to follow aurally or enjoy a drum solo..I guess because I am a guitarist, I am used to that instrument..

  • This superhuman is my drumteacher ;D

  • This man is superhuman. This is some of the most amazing, natural, elgant drumming I've ever seen. I'm not a drummer, but I still can't believe I didn't know him already. I may become fully conscious again in a week or so...

  • totally

  • sounds almost like he is playing whilst falling down the stairs. definitely the best falling down the stairs i've ever heard. really liked it but it isn't his best in my opinion

  • Dude, if you think Morgan Agren sounds like he is falling down the stairs then you really know nothing about music and probably not much in general. Go listen to Green Day or something a little easier to follow.

  • FRANK ZAPPA RULES ! :D aaah, Jag bor granne med Morgan :D

  • is this being transmitted from Sweden?

WHY IS THERE A FUCKING LAG IN THE SOUND??

  • Who is this band he's playing with here?

  • It sounded like Zappa in the beginning? Some of his orchestral arrangments? This guys the shit...

  • This song is "Waka Jawaka".

Check it out it's in the album with a same title.

  • Definatlely Zappa...

  • teach me

  • my fav kind of cymbals

  • A true master of speed and linear

    drumming.

  • is he gravity blasting ?

  • You have no idea WTF you're talking about. :)

  • He looks a bit more uncomfortable here than he usually does when he's playin

  • @ 1:20 *opens eyes* ahahaha

  • hahah everyone is like all dressed up and hes just like wearing some ol shirt hehe lol

  • He is badass!

  • it would be a massive understatement to say that you are badass

  • You too, have no idea what you're talking about. :)

  • sensational

  • He is the Roy Haynes of heavy metal...really good!

  • I almost passed out at the One handed Drum roll..

  • Ball tearing.

  • YES,YES,YES

  • filthadelic! he's more cohesive in that format with Thordendal ...then again, I'd like to hear a clip of him actually accompanying that [big] band.

  • I think this is taken from the Zappa's Universe concerts, because I can see Ike Willis on guitar, and Tommy Mars on keyboards

  • Anyone have any Idea where this was recorded at? I'd love to see more video, or atleast find an audio version of it. If anyone knows lemme know.

  • They have started a musical revolution.

  • he is one of those drummers who has the unbelievable rare talent of making the most complex shit (and that really is some of the most complext shit) look so damn easy, he hasnt even broke a sweat. GOD

  • Yup, i caught onto mats and morgan after listening to Meshuggah forever, some of the most talented and ground breaking musicians. ever

  • hes gotta be on speeeeeeeeeed....=)

In fact it's one of the fattest solos I've ever seen in my life! I like this jazz-style...

  • O.O!!!! YIKES . . . thanx to Thordendal and Meshuggah for turning me on to this great drummer! -MAVIII(progulus.com)

  • Awesome. the only word for it.

  • its like ratatatatata ! xD

  • This guy's cool, I'm noticing the way I'm playing lately is alot more similar to his than I intended. Good drummer.

  • Holy oh my Fuck!

  • no shit that ruled
