don't look down on people who don't like this, it's fully understandable.
I would like to think that he plays an improvised solo like the way a pianist would do.
Removing the borders between instruments, he's playing in no special time but in tune, like the pianist for example, and he's wailing like a singer but on the drums.
I don't really like listening to this, but i think of what i've written when i hear it.

If you want to talk about creativity and "musical" drumming. Look no further than Joe Morello. This Morgan guy is unique in a certain sense, but it's nothing inspiring. It's dry and boring. It's the sound of technical tinkering.
There's no bop, no jive, no rock, no groove, no swing in this solo. Or maybe he's light years ahead of the curve but I don't see anything amazing here, other than some guy with a lot of talent that took it in a dull direction.
there is a lot of phrasing going on here. your problem is that you are listening for a groove. don't do this. take a broader look (a broader listen?) and you'll hear huge "phrases" being done to time. you'll be pleasantly surprised at how musical it is!
yeah i guess this kind of music, or drumming in this video requires more then just sitting down and tapping your foot to, if you cant hear the musical genius behind this then its prob just a little too much for your short attention span.
joe and morgan are different drummers.. both representing totally different eras in music and drumming. joe comes from a much older generation and is fantastic!
morgan is a younger breed and has different ideas.. i wouldnt champion one over the other because they're so different.
i think morgans phrasing in this solo is completely unique.. the spaces he's finding are very interesting. i dont think his intention is to swing in any conventional sense of the word.
man i dont realy see buddy as much of an artist or a creator of new music . He was a sick drummer who worked on his technique all day. but i would never even for a second say he had half the talent of a true artist like morgan , fast hands and tricks and drum chops dont make you an artist they make a a preformer . being able to think with a mind like morgans , thats being an artist . few drummers think beyond the rudiments. thats all buddy did was spam what he knew
im sorry i cant agree with you man buddy may have had a more devoloped technique but this guy is WAY more talented i belive his creativity is far beyonds buddy . buddys solos were all technical and were devoloped in a very mathimatical way. totally just spamed uber fast rudiments . morgan thinks with a artists mind and can make the drumset sound any way he wants it to his emotions are totally one with his playing sol niger within ? mats and morgan band ? check that stuff out dude
I don't see why a jazz drummer should be compared to a contemporary one. It's needless to argue who's better anyway, they represent totally different styles. It's only up to our personal preference.
I'm in a Jazz history class currently and after learning and listening to buddy rich. His ego was way bigger than his playing....yeah sure he was the best, for his time. But people need to open their eyes to more abstract and complex playing like Morgan does. Morgan is way more expressive and in depth with his knowledge and feel for music.
disagree....Buddy was a major ASSHOLE, but he could do anything. If he played today in the current idioms...he would still be the best. Hes like Babe Ruth.
@CarroT0P IT's the same for every of artistsOf course in the past we had a very good musicians (where in same case their fame were raised by ppls),but we really need to start accept new concepts and ideas
i m immensly proud of my roots, only if you check out you get tonns of good sweedish bands. Most known are opeth, Meshuggah, In Flames,The Haunted and At The Gates. All amazing
I really can't fathom what's going on here, but I'm pretty sure if I could understand jazz solos a little better I'd know that it's awesome. The look on the lady's face is priceless!
Fantastic drummer. This was with Banned From Utopia and Joel Thome with Ike Willis, Tom Fowler, Tommy Mars... But personally I think Morgan plays even better today, check out the last Mats/Morgan CD/DVD release "HeatBeats Live", it's pure magic.
Drummers having the most physically active role in a live musical composition, can't be hindered by a three piece suit. But at least he could have got a shave and a haircut, haha! He looks like he rolled out of bed, then laid down a stellar drum track.
MATS & MORGAN will perform with their All Star Team on the MELLOBOAT 8-9 March 2008. It´s shaping up to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. "Dude, if you think Morgan Agren sounds like he is falling down the stairs then you really know nothing about music and probably not much in general. Go listen to Green Day or something a little easier to follow."
agren also done the drumming for fredrik thordendal's solo album "sol niger within." check that out if you can get your hands on it, it's an amazing album.
I can see he's one of the best drummers out there..but I find it really difficult to follow aurally or enjoy a drum solo..I guess because I am a guitarist, I am used to that instrument..
This man is superhuman. This is some of the most amazing, natural, elgant drumming I've ever seen. I'm not a drummer, but I still can't believe I didn't know him already. I may become fully conscious again in a week or so...
sounds almost like he is playing whilst falling down the stairs. definitely the best falling down the stairs i've ever heard. really liked it but it isn't his best in my opinion
