This is what they do in Iran. They actually stone the criminals to death in public executions, yet crime still persists and people are still being executed. Obviously this is not the societal panacea you purport. I'm not saying these men aren't wrong and should receive impunity for their actions, I'm just saying the death penalty is not a solution to the problem of aggression and hostility--you have to attack the mentality that caused the act.

As such, we as a society should search for a better solution--preferably one that is proactive rather than reactive to prevent these sort of events.

solofly- What a load of crap. If criminals would actually start being punished, that alone would deter crime. We need prisons that are actually prisons. Prisons should not be country clubs with cable tv, exercise equip., catered meals, etc. we should not be spending billions of $ to keep those animals comfortable behind bars. They should be given only enough food to sustain life with no modern conveniences. The punishment should fit the crime. Maybe then people would start acting human.

You act as if going to jail is a vacation. My argument in the previous post was against capital punishment not prison, although I do feel our correctional instituion system does need to be changed. Too many people are jailed for nonviolent acts such as drug possession: Politicians want to look good so they increase the incarceration stats to provide a sense of safety and appear as if they've made a difference. Unfortunately jail may cultivate crime, it doesn't prevent a repeat of drug posession

You can never control a mans thinking. God gave us all free will. Criminals have and always will exist, but if they know that the punishment will fit the crime it may deter some from turning to crime. I do agree that too many people are in jail because of stupid drug laws, but when a violent act, such as in the video, occurs there should be very, very stiff penalties. Btw, jail is a vacation to some because they have more in prison than what they have on the streets.

Crime occurs at the junction of society where it split between those who have and those who have not. If all are provided for, then they will not need to commit crime. If one has the means to afford food, one would not need to steal it; If one did not need money to pay for a lawyer to actually be able to enforce one's "inalienable rights", then vigilantism would not be necessary. I'm speaking of crime in general, not necessarily this video or crime done by those with mental problems.

The poor people not commiting crimes are not yet desperate enough from poverty. maybe you haven't stepped outside lately, take a look away from your computer screen and asked the criminals why they do crime, ask the strippers and prostitutes why they turn to sex--i doubt many of them do it out of a voracious sexual apetite, but instead for money.

That's a nice analysis. But unfortunately it's not true. The evidence is that blacks are disproportionately unwilling to work. Not that they can't find it....they don't want it. And they are also disproportionately violent criminals with the 'fast buck' mentality. I want it and I want it now. If a woman refuses, rape her. If he wants money, hit somebody. And crime is overwhelmingly amongst people of similar socio-economic groups. Not at a junction of have & haven't as you theorize.
