2:15 Here's an idee! Make a top 10 list of best mothership levels!! I would make one my self...but having only played super r-type and last resort...well that makes it a ratter small list! nr 2 super r-type and nr 1 last resort

Looks almost like bullet hell at some points. I haven't had the pleasure (or displeasure) of playing this one. The Gradius collection for Saturn was pretty fun, but you definitely wouldn't care for it if you aren't a fan. I'm on the fence with Konami shmups. The demand more dedication than I'm willing to give.
Wow man, you're playing on loop 2 to begin with, which is why the screen is so busy. I actually like the Gradius style power up system which is why I prefer Lifeforce over Salamander because they incorporated that system. The backgrounds are highly detailed and psychedelic as you said. In the end everyone has their own tastes in games. As always, great review Matt!
Entertaining overview dude! I just hope Stardust didn't destroy the spine card eventually. Must admit, Salamander was the first ever shmup i played on arcade wise back in '86. I do enjoy the series but i do agree on the "average" point of the game. But i'll still pickup a copy some point mate. :D
Great review matt. I've never been to into the old Gradius games myself, and this looks like one too close to that style for me. I did enjoy Axelay though, I think they should've evolved more off of that formula
@dunpeal2064 with a few tweaks it would have been a classic. Just make the ships a bit bigger, less of them flying around and make the weapons a bit stronger!
Good review Matt!! Personally I love the Gradius/Salamander series. Gradius was the first proper space side-scrolling Shoot 'Em Up I played as a kid so it has a special fondness. I'm hoping that Konami re-release Salamander as part of their 'rebirth' series on the Wii :).

@oldskoolrc ah yeah, gradius rebirth is pretty awesome actually, note sure if it classes as old skool or new skool but looks damn nice either way, and very playable.

I brought PCE Salamander some time ago after hearing it was one of the best shooters ever etc, cant say I ever gelled with it or Gradious either for that matter. So is Gary going for the Tom Sellick look now? If he starts role playing Magnum P.I. in the living room, I'd call the police..

Being a gradius / salamander fan for years, I think I can briefly explain how these games are supposed to be played. These games are not meant to be enjoyable the first time through. You are supposed to memorize the maps on your first endeavor and come up with ways to strategically get through the levels with minimal deaths, then play through the game the second time with full power up.

you more or less summed up why I dislike Konami shooters- Gradius III makes me pull out my hair in frustration!
Taito shooters are often very difficult themselves, but I find that they are much more enjoyable, especially where the Saturn is concerned.
A nice informative review, to boot. Watching one of your reviews showed me a hidden gem in In the Hunt, so thanks for that.
