for me it looks like a lot of fun, not shit.. super ghouls and ghosts filled nights of entertainment with some friends. ghosts and goblins was also a long run though i guess we never finished it. as far as i can see, you were just not used to the gameplay O.o thats no reason to call it broken.

If the game was too hard, it would had been near or just plain unplayable. BUT, Ghouls and ghosts is playable.

i beat this game without dying once. you have to replay it to get the ending but i was able to get through in one life the first time around. the kid next to me was pissed because we were playing 2 players and he was waiting his turn to play. i was cutting school back then (junior high in 1989)
