I've been eating this guys punches for several years, and done a lot of "muaysakhon" - orthodox boxing sparring with him, and he is really really good, even with details such as bobbing and weaving. He is not supposed to rely a lot on punching in his fights though due to his chin is his only weak link against top 10 fighters.
Can some one tell me why his right hand goes like this. I've seens many many thai do it so i know its a good technique, i just dont understand why his right elbow is so high when he does a right punch. I love thai fighters they are the exemple
@TheJeanRaphael I Imagine there are a number of reasons. 1. It looks a bit like an elbow coming in, confuses the opponent. 2. It is easy to convert to an elbow. 3. extra protection for the side of his head. 4. Maybe his punching could be improved (don't call me a farang whiteboy know-nothing, a Thai can be wrong too. I'm sure he isn't arrogant enough to believe he cannot learn anything new, that's partly why he's training...)
@muaythaifighterau Has he ever KO'd someone with that punch? i still think its a sucky punch.... I bet he is one of those "I only kick, cuz i get alot of points for it" guys, it suck. I dont like the thai style. EU-style is much better, the punch combo into low kick style :) (like hoost, earts, spong, souwer)
Your funny dude. A 19 year old non Thai trying to talk about a Thai champion about his technique. Just stop dude. I am not going to even argue with you cause arguing on the internet is like the special olympics, if you win your still retared.
I can see where your coming from 2ossy in that it's not the perfect "boxers" punch, in terms of technique and biomechanics. But haszk is right in so many ways. There is no "right" way to punch, it's whatever works for the individual in the end. Next you'll be telling me Fedor punches "wrong" because he swings like a wild ape lol, but he be knocking dudes the F out!! lol.
Ok, from a boxing perspection it is, 'uncommon'. For the sake of speed in your combinations you keep your elbows tucked in.
But in Muay-Thai you also have elbows to connect with AND defend against. Liver punches aren't simply in favor anymore when you have rock hard knees and elbows to fight against.
There is also some discussion about power, elbows up removes the bending in your elbow. ALOT more impact.

Punches are different in all fight sports. Muay thai punch doesn't looks like a boxing punch. Or a karate punch. Simple.

Notable boxers fighting elbow UP: Roberto Duran, Rocky Marciano.
