It's more complicated than this. In cases where people who are victims of non consensual experimentation for instance, not only does the psychological and other harassment mimic mental illness, but keeping the person in the constant state of PTSD can alter the brain in significant ways. In addition, there is this idea of "breaking a person" involved - see Sargant's work in the 1950s. These things can also push ppl into extreme beliefs which then discredits them further. It has to stop.
