I've been trying to work out that damn little chromatic part (2nd bar) for about an hour with absolutely no luck for about an hour, stumble across this video and get it in one. Thanks :)
I figured this bass part out by watching bunch these bass cover videos for this song so I could arrange this for my school's pep band. Love the middle section with the horns. Love playing that part on my sax and love the fact that everyone is in unison playing it even the bass and guitar.
i have been playing for over 15 years,,,, I just cannot do this one.. great lesson.. I dont think my mind can retain it all... I have had 2 one hour lessons trying to learn this song.. never could get the run.
just so you all know...I did this video to teach the bass player in my cover band the part. I realized later that I should have jumped up an octave in the 2nd measure.....apologies.
It's important to learn music theory when you're starting out...but it can't replace your ear. I've always said that, with parts like this one, you need to be able to sing it in your head to be able to learn it....otherwise you're just trying to remember patterns on the fretboard which will get you in trouble for sure. I'm a guitar player primarily...which helped me because chordal theory is really important on bass.
yeah I'm a guitar player and singer but I love the bass. I guess I should be forcing myself to learn songs by ear. it's just so frustrating. I will definitely take your advice tho and learn the notes in the bass lines I learn so I know what scale they're from.

Do you use the 5th string?
boredoutofhismind1 8 months ago
@boredoutofhismind1 I originally recorded this to teach it to the bass player in my cover band...so I didn't use the fifth string.

So cool to see people playing this one. Good job. I think the second measure is played an octave higher on the original song. Thanks for posting.

Excellent teaching job! No fret numbers/string names! This is the way it should be done!

what are the numbers you mention?
ShannonVenasse 2 years ago
all notes in the B major scale ex: B is 1, C# is 2...etc.

I thought so. since I'm still kinda new to the bass it's hard for me to follow this. do you learn songs by ear or tab on the net?
