Y'all think this is big. There was an engine that went into a train that had 20 cylinders, and 710 cubic inches in each cylinder, the hole bored for them was 9 inches wide!
@CaptainBig8IIIIIID I used to work at Cat LEC in Lafayette IN. The engine in this video is similar to a cat 3516 series. Depending on the intended use, the engines would usually be fitted with 1 or 2 electric starters about 5" in diameter and about a 12" long. They could also be fitted with air powered starters. The flywheel was about 2.5 feet in diameter which gives a good ratio for torque. We painted ours red when they would be used for fire pumps, yellow normal use, and blue for marine use
I'm not smart when it comes to diesel so can someone tell me why this has barely any of that characteristic knocking sound that a diesel engine normally has?
@iXetsuei id say you have a good ear...it has no exhuast , mufflers and pipes make them quiet enough so you can hear the high compression these motors need to run
I have an old and lazy Ford Transit van with a perkins engine. This beast could bring some real power if I mount it into the cargo bay. Unfortunately it can't be fitted into the orginal engine bay :-p
my Uncle works at Cummins and I've seen a massive amount of engines go through testing there, I've seen a V-16 up close and in person. such a powerful and huge engine. I thought it was quiet amazing! beautiful works of art!
its not running right too much diesel in the cylinders making the smoke white mixed in is unused diesel in stead of burt black exhaust the sign of a good running diesel
@cobraopts7 Black smoke is unburnt fuel leaving the cylinders, white smoke usually is a sign of air/water vapor in the engine or a colder engine and it dissapates as the engine warms. Black smoke just means your not burning all the fuel in the cylinder which causes it to continue to burn on its way out resulting in higher EGT's. A smokeless diesel is a good running diesel. Even in the perforrmance world smoke is not desired. Banks record holding duramax is actually smoke free.
@desmodronic916 because the closest turbo thats the inlet side the exhaust side is on the opposite side...the far turbo the inlet is on the opposite side..
@coday161 that's a good thing because they chose to go with cummins instead who know what they are doing when it comes to diesel engines. Ford and chevy try to jump into the diesel game and there's not one engine from them that is as good as a cummins.
For many years FORD had International engines in their cars. And for some time the Intenational engines were built (at least bolted together) in Japana.
@N4ANE The oil system holds 76 gallons (304 quarts) of oil. The cooling system holds 59 gallons (236 quarts) of coolant. The wet engine weight is 24,912 pounds.
@N4ANE I read on Diesel Power website that the new Cummins v18 takes 76 gallons of oil, and another astounding 59 Gallons of Coolant, all weighing in the engine at 24,912 Pounds ;)

@14omega28ok generally the larger the engine the quieter it runs. something to do with the lower RPMS and the larger exhausts. on diesels the huge turbo also muffles the sound quite a bit.
It runs beautifully. Now what are you going to do with it? You could repower a 42' Bertram with one of these and swing a prop about 3 feet in diameter while turning 1200 rpm. bup, bup, bup, bup, bup, bup, bup, bup, bup, bup, bup, bup, bup, bup, bup, bup, bup, bup, bup, bup. bup, bup, bup, bup, bup, bup, bup, bup, bup, bup, bup, bup, bup, bup, bup.......
