I think Britwatcher is a party plant. The EU is a corrupt dictatorship that has wiped England from the map, fragmented it into 9 regions to prevent national identity and is assisting with the ethnic cleansing of the English race. We pay a fortune to belong to a club whose sole aim is the German/Franco domination of Europe. Simply a more subtle and effective approach than the 1914 & 1935 efforts.
The same people are behind the European project as were behind both world wars. Out at all costs.
The world is changing, we can not stop this change. With a growing China and India, with Britains share of global GDP radically declining along with our military strenght. We need membership of the European Union which is able to have a far stronger voice on the world stage in trade talks or dealing with other issues because of its size.
Whilst membership is expensive and results in many pointless directives and regulations, taking an isolationist approach would weaken this country more.
I don't see why being part of Europe would give us any greater 'voice' internationally. We would still have the same population and the same trading power. It would only be helpful if we agreed with Europe's stance, which we can do outside of it. If we disagreed we would be under the whip and having to commit to whatever Europe decides.
Yes our population and economy remains the same, the point is when the EU speaks with one voice as it does on trade at something like the WTO, we have a much more powerful voice. We speak as the largest economic bloc on the planet, accountable for a huge share of global GDP and with a population of 500 million people.
This is the only way we can keep a level playing field with a rising power like china. Ofcourse we dont always agree with Europe, but foreign affairs requires unanimity anyway
@TheBritishWatcher What will Japan do? Will it become part of china?... I don't think now is the time to be coming out of the EU but there's a lot of negotiating to be done to sort this ridiculousness out. early days.
Well there are asian trading blocs in development, Some people want APEC to become a Free trade Area. Japan has options for the future. The trouble is in Europe there is only one true trade bloc and thats the European Union. Even countries like Norway that dont join the EU have access to the common market and comply with the basic principles of the EU. For example we can live and work in Switzerland and Norway despite them not being in the EU, they also have open borders with europe. We dont
You are talking utter bullshit TheBritshwatcher!! The usual scaremongering nonsense!! No institution deserves to be paid £45million a day ( and it will go up) that we pay to the eu. Certainly not an institution as corrupt as the eu!!
And millions of that 45 million a day is returned to Britain and spent here. There is a huge amount of waste in the EU, it needs major reform. But we should not just walk away because of that. The price we pay is worth EU membership.
I respect you dedication to this issue, without doubt i think you are the best backbencher in the house of commons but i do disagree with your views on Britains withdrawl from the European Union and the wording of the sovereignty bill introduced which goes too far.
I support the conservative policy of returning certain powers back to westminster and ensuring that no new powers are transfered. I also agree the EU has huge problems but we can not just walk away from the union.
The UK parliament still remains sovereign with or without a sovereignty bill. At any point Westminster can simply repeal the European Communities Act 1972 and take us out of the union. It can also refuse to implement something if its simply unacceptable to the UK, it would cause a huge political crisis in the EU but theyd back down in the end.
Yes and that price we pay lines the pockets of eu members - not worth the membership - you're just fooling yourself!! Grand delusion!! When lies are perpetuated and told long enough they turn into truths no doubt. After the debacle of the MPs' expenses people need to be shown how that pales into insignificance when put alongside eu corruption. But of course the eu can always rely on "useful idiots" like yourself to promote their ghastly agenda.
lol it depends on your point of view if you think its worth it. I think membership of the largest economic bloc on the planet is indeed worth it.
You isolationists need to understand the whole of europe is moving closer together. If we remain in we have some control over the direction it takes and veto power over further major developments. If we leave we will have no control at all and be the only country in western europe taking such a backward step.
You really should do something about those rose tinted glasses you wear! Corruption is what keeps the eu going - leaving it could only ever be a step forward. Have you heard of Switzerland and Norway?? They're not in the eu!! - yours is just the usual retarded threat. - that was the point of the Lisbon treaty - it slowly but surely wants to veto control by Nation States to become an entity in its own right. IF YOU DON'T GET THAT THEN IT PROVES MY POINT THAT YOU ARE JUST A USEFUL IDIOT!
Switzerland and Norway are not in the European Union, however they both continue down the path of EU integration. Both allow EU citizens the right to live and work in those countries, just in the way Polish workers can come and live here. The immigration issue is one of the main things people moan about europe, yet it applies to non EU countries too.
Norway and Switzerland also both are part of the schengen zone, (open borders). Britain as a member of the EU doesnt even go that far.
So when you isolationists say we should withdraw from the EU, do you want us to be like norway and Switzerland? have no say over which countries can join the EU, no control over how the EU develops, but still comply with EU legislation on many matters, accept the principles of free movement of labour etc.
Or would u have us go further and not comply at all? UKIP bang on about being like Norway, people here wouldnt be that much happier with Norways situation
The stupidity of your comments know no bounds - Switzerland and Norway go along with the eu without being members - they certainly do not go along the path of intergration. So would you describe Switzerland and Norway as isolationists???
WHO CARES IF THE UK ACCEPTS THAT PRINCIPLE OR NOT - AS A NATION STATE THEY SHOULD HAVE THE CHOICE SO TO DO!!
So Switzerland and Norway are isolationist?? Well I love and have visited Switzerland many times - if that's what it''s like to be isolationist - BRING IT ON!!
But im asking you if we would do it or not. It matters because it impacts on how our future relationship with the EU would be. This is why you can not just say "lets leave the EU" without focusing on the other matters.
Switzerland is more isolationist than Norway. Switzerland has taken pride in its neutral status where it stays out of things and has done for over a century. Britain is not like that. The UK is a member of the UN security council. We want a role to play on the world stage.
@TheBritishWatcher Here we get to the truth. You don't care about anything else, except for this 'world stage' stuff. You mention economics vaguely, but this isn't what drives you. It is obvious, like many europhiles, that your main motive is for political power.
Foreign affairs is the reason why i support the European Union yes. I would not describe it as political power, but it is to ensure that Britain and Europe maintain the ability to influence global events and not simply be swamped by China and the United States. Britain alone has a small voice, when we speak as the EU it is much stronger
It is fairly obvious, that you actually care most about foreign policy. Economics is something you will mention, like many before you, as a way to persuade people. It works especially well on the Tories as they are more likely to warm to the idea of libertarianism and free trade.
You are someone obsessed with the power of the UK internationally. You use classic arguments based on fear and time running out.
I would not say i am obsessed with power, however i want Britain to maintain its global influence and ability to shape this world. To do that we must work with our european friends and have a strong united voice on issues we agree with. There is full veto power over foreign affairs, so it only applies when we agree.
