I'm a big fan of Tora-san and I really love it. It reminds me of each story in a very sentimental way. Music is also beautiful. I think it matches very well with the pictures. Also the subtitles are so nice. I like your translation. Anyway I was so impressed. It is a new type of Tora-san's films that I've ever seen.
Lily comes back in the final movie, number 48. They were making a 49th movie I think before Atsumi Kiyoshi died. The cover of that movie had Mitsuo and Izumi in wedding dress, so supposedly they were planning to make them marry
Also in many of the later movies during the 90s and late 80s, the madonna was actually Mitsuo's potential love rather than Tora-san's
Yeah. I read that for the later movies, it seems like director Yoji Yamada was trying to transition the series from Tora-san to his nephew, Mitsuo. Didn't know they were making a 49th movie though. Atsumi Kiyoshi was Tora-san and I don't think any other actor could have taken his place.
I think what happened is Atsumi Kiyoshi was very sick. He had been in and out of hospital most of his life and had spent two years in a sanitarium. I think as early as the 30s he had kidney problems, bladder problems, arthritis, etc. In the 50s he had a lung extracted because of tuberculosis.
Around the mid-80s his health had deteriorate so much that he couldn't appear much in the films anymore, with minimum dialogue lines.
Then, in 94, his liver cancer spread to his lung. A sad story, really.
An interesting thing I heard is that Atsumi once traveled with a small theater group and they performed on stage all over the country. I think he performed under the stage name "Atsumi Yorokobo" at the time (he got Atsumi from the Atsumi Peninsula in Aichi).
Eventually he was too sick to keep traveling
Hearing Atsumi tell his life story inspired Yamada Yoji to create Tora-san, with the free traveler's life that Atsumi's health took away from him. Tora-san was sort of Atsumi's healthy alter-ego
I love this idea of compiling the madonnas of the Tora-san series, great job, but I really don't think the music goes well with it. Too modern. It takes away from the old Tokyo feel of Japanese cinema.. I had to mute it. Great compilation nonetheless.
I'm not really familiar with Japanese music so I just used a song that I liked. Maybe next time I'll be able to find something a little more "old school." Thanks for the comment.

You could try using the theme from the movie `Taiga no itteki`
It's a beautiful movie with a great soundrack, and I think the DVD also comes with subtitles.
