Its a good thing you had a locker in the front so it can still dig ya out 1 wheel digging is better than no wheel. I broke a dana 44 in my old truck and didn't have a locker front tires didn't spin at all due to the broken pass side axel in 4wd
@K20wheeler i dont know much a bout rear axls but isnt a ford 9" stronger than a gm 14 bolt i dont know about off road but in drag racing the ford 9" is king =3- i hade to put a ford in my crysler i barfed up 2 crysler rear axles =3-
i owned a 89 yj 35 s 4 inch lift kept having issues from the tranfercase finaly found someone dumb enuff to trade me there 1980 cj5 real jeeps have round head lights
@batesville2 my advise, just rip out that dana in the rear and drop a 8.8 inch ford rear in. not a fan of ford but its bullet proof, pretty common swap to, there are plenty of kits you can get for it
Dana 60 would be the right choice for a K5, but you can make a D44 work up to about 38" tires with a heavy foot with chromoly axle shafts. Yukon, Superior, Warn or the like. I run a D44 with a 14 bolt out back with 37" MT/R's on a 78 stepside with good results. Used to break stock shafts all the time. Locked front and rear
it all depends on what size tires you want to run. if your gunna run anything over a 37" tire i would run a dana 60. i got a dana 44 on my 78' chevy k20 with a 6inch lift and 36x14.5 mickey thompson baja's
@InverterDude depends on how much HP you are running i have 4 jeeps and a 90 K5 blazer 6in lift 35in tires and the dana 44 has held up good the 700R4 on the other hand has not i have a 79 cj5 with a 401 AMC and it snapes dana 44s 3 already but if its a stock blazer shouldnt have any problems

@InverterDude the k5's came from the factory with a dana 44.....well gm's equivilent at least, some were danas some were gm 10 bolts, both just as strong and both suck with v8's and 35+ inch tires in moderate offroad use.....if your upgrading a k5 get a dana 60.....they can be found in 70-89 gm 1ton trucks although not ALL 1tons had them......look for the 3+3's in the 4x4 package.
@InverterDude get an 80's 1 ton chevy and take everything out of it, the turbo 400 trans, the np205 transfer case and the dana 60-14 bolt full floater axle combo, you'll have the best of everything including the upgraded trans and t-case as well as the beefier u-joints, all you'll have to change is the rear drive line, a good shop can cut it down 4 you cheap, this is the best running gear 4 a k5 without going after market or rockwell, and u can get an old truck for almost no $.
my question is How the hell do you break an axle just rolling like that? You must have had issues before this clip or something...cause that lil bump you went over ain't gonna break a Dana 44.
Oh and no such thing as Ford or Chevy 60,10 bolt 14 bolt ,or 44 axles as these axles are made by Dana spicer and American axle manufacture (AAM) ,and not chevy, ford ,or dodge...infact daimler chrysler is using AAM axles in place of Dana axles in many application now .
no madzyzome ,most people use axles from the ,but usually only the front hp DANA 60 they use it b/c it's HP and driver drop the DANA 60 front from a chevy is passenger drop and low pinion ,but has more gaering options and is easily upgraded to 35 spline stubs ...the hp 60 is not easily/cheaply upgraded...
HAHAAHA those are Chevy axles and they suck!! most people swap out 70's Ford F150 or even 90's dodge 1500's because they have driver side drop front diff.
i don't know why the person put dana 60 in the title? it's a waggy 44 and it broke 20 min before this video was shot. sorry about the mis-labeled title.and chevy axles do suck.
oh i thought that sound was just the camera man hitting a button. Ok thatnks for pointing it out. Nice he was able to make it out of the hole on his own lol
well that was just the begining of it after he broke that he broke the rear u-joint on the driveshaft so he had to run in one-wheel drive the whole way out.
Damn pulled out even with a broke axle impressive what are the tires 33 mickys?

Dana 44's are pretty tough right? what size would a K5 blazer need?
InverterDude 2 years ago
the dana 44 in the front of this jeep is out of a full size cherokee. i dont know alot about chevy blazers.
danthejeepman87 2 years ago
blazers usually come with a 44 or a 10bolt.both are a waste of time. spend the money,buy a 60,rockwell
MrBlueyedevil 2 years ago
you can do a dana 44 under a full size blazer. just upgrade the axle shafts if needed

If it's not your everyday vehicle try some detroit lockers or ARB air lockers
ArcticWolf4570 3 years ago
even if it is, don't be a pussy... put the detroits in anyways. Besides, it was locked in the vid....
MrCadillacLT1 3 years ago
If your tight and cash and not doing anything TOO crazy. Just get a lunchbox. Lockright or Aussie.
Otherwise, balls out. Detroit rear and ARB in front.
