Hats off to Billy Taylor for a showlike this. This is what New York was like. Buck Clayton - Ben Webster - Benny Morton - and Dr. Taylor - cookin. His philosophy was just let the people be exposed to it and the rest will take care of itself. Someone needs to pick up where he left off. He will be missed.
Ben Webster sure knew how to stroll along the line between super-cool restraint, and bold, blustery pure fun.
it's time to take Evolution out of the textbooks - we're sliding down the drain - and I don't care how advanced we are, tech-wise. The average working, journeyman musician back in these days forgot more about music in a month than lots of the
Early television could be amazingly hip... that is, before the producers discovered that formulaic sit-com crap got much better ratings. At first they were wondering "What do we put on?" So here we have Ben Webster and friends, preserved almost by accident. What a blessing— and "Leave It To Beaver," et al, was no improvement. But it sold a lot more soap flakes.
Blow Mr Ben Mr Ben blow,Buck Clayton,Mundell Lowe sounding like Charlie Christan,Benny Morton swing that thing nice blowing by all.A nice taste of Billy Taylor.
Thanks to You Tube I can see my dad, Eddie Safranski, on "The Subject is Jazz". What a treat for our family. Thank you!

Это джаз. Джаз с большой буквы. Гиганты типа Вебстера - золотой фонд настоящего джаза. Я имею ввиду меинстрим.

Great performance.
Consistently the most passionate of tenor sax players, Ben Webster.
The great Benny Morton on trombone. A tip - look for his famous solo on Fletcher Henderson's Sugar Foot Stomp, where he makes that lip trill.
