oh my dear lord sermerlin you have absolutely no fucking idea what your talking about. man do you make alot of assumptions. 6gb are not going on geforce gpus. end of story. 6gbs go on tesla, which none of you can afford. or would want.
hardly hear them mention the word GAMES, seriously wtf, eh i guess with all these older guys i see workin at nvidia what do we expect. i guess maybe nvidia is aiming at things other than gaming due to ATI's success and ability to price great cards MUCH lower than they can,....ive always been an nvidia fan but sheesh comon.
@GiggleHz Because 90% of Nvidia's profit comes from selling computing cards. If Nvidia completely dropped gaming it wouldn't hurt them too badly. They make their money from Tesla, Fermi, and Quadro. Also I love the fact that they showed Linux when they were talking about applications going extremely fast.
@linuxrobotdude well, u might be right, i remember reading something about how they can afford to take a loss on gaming market by selling their tesla/quadro at insane prices. Might also be why they saved all the 512 core fermis for that market. Either way, i bought 3 gtx 480s, and the original 3 i bought all broke, but have all now been RMA'd and working. Was a big headache though, goin to the 480s
@jeroeniskoning heh, yah linux is pretty cool, and ive used it for shits and giggles in the past but, it will never become viable for the masses. Most people dont wanna open up a console and type code to get hardware working, so until it becomes more end user friendly it wont become a threat to MS, its a good OS though, i liked it.
@jeroeniskoning I still enjoy using the console for quite a few things. I hate having to search through menus to find a log of some error where a terminal just prints the error message and the program terminates. You have to go find the log whereas on a console you just read the output. And anyways it is not so bad. Ubuntu Server 10.04 uses 32 MB of ram when running without X windows up. I run console linux distributions on my robotics projects.
@GiggleHz Even though many people don't know about it or possibly don't like it, it still out performs both Windows and Mac OSX. Unlike both of those it scales across multiple hardware platforms. Most smart phones (excluding the iPhone) use Linux in one form or another. Android is a linux kernel with a Java VM as the interface. It also has a low system impact so it is perfect for netbooks. I have a second gen EEE Pc hanging around and Linux dominates XP on it.
@linuxrobotdude ah i hear ya man, i get it, linux is great it has a ton of stuff goin for it, not the least of which is its free, but its not quite ready to take on windows, now im sure it may someday soon, but it still doesnt play alot of games and lacks support for other software now i know your gonna list a bunch of great apps and games it does flawlessly and thats cool but again, your average layman computer user doesnt care bout that, BUT ubuntu was pretty close...
@GiggleHz I do agree with that. All I am saying is that if developers shy away from it, it will never be able to compete with Windows. The only market it really dominates right now is that there are more Linux/Unix servers than Windows servers. However on the point of games, by middle of next year most of every game on Steam will be ported to Mac OSX and Linux platforms.
lol as far as i can see "fermi" will be for programers who make games because it is very good it has 6gb ddr5 as i heard and lots of other stuff people think why do i need this shit to play games? well u dont because it will probably be expensive but this is VERY useful to people who make games it will be alot easier for them but they will probably poor down that graphic card for us "lesser species"
Fermi will also be for anyone wanting to make a lot of parallel calculations which can be used in all kinds of scientific and engineering fields. While it may be out of range for a lot of individuals it allows even say small community colleges to run their own little supercomputers and train their students to program for parallel architectures.
i hope fermi will be out before the holidays so we can actualy own it before the new year.
ye not only that but a gtx360 and gtx380 should force AMD to cut down its radeon 58xx pricings.
and then there is availability something that i hope will be fixed soon because shops that have it in stock now ask you like a €80/150 premium. total bullcrap id say. so i cannot wait until the 5850 is forced to drop to €150 :P
@k001k1dzm4n14 if u had this card now m8 trust me u would be able to run games at max settings for about 5 or 6 years and after that probably have to reduce settings but not much... because it has 6gb gddr5 and it has like super gpu oh and after 5 years u can buy another fermi and use it as sli so think about that 10 years with only 1 card huh?
Your "master plan" sounds swell, but Nvidias new Fermi card is going to cost between 800~900 dollars, do you know what this means, it means Ati has the upper hand already. Nvidia is not finished with the Fermi card, they said they're going to try to lunch it next year, 2010 Q1, which sound pretty bad. But if you have the money and the will to wait, be my guess ! Cheers !
You got to be out of your Goddamn mind ! Do you read the news, or what people write on the web ? The new paperdragon, or Fermi card will be priced above anything on the current marked, Nvidias Ceo has commented that the first Gen will be expensive, but prices will be sat down as soon they mass produce the cards after April. Ati will not drop prices, they don't have too. Gt 300 costs in dollars 1200 $
Dude, I posted twice, its just a rumor for now. Its people who are writing in their blog about it, I just read it. I've also fallowed blogs on Nvidias site, they aren't answering anything for now, or they don't want to. The rumor is that the GT300 series is lunching slow because Nvidia is up to something, so they're going in the marked a bit slower. Jen Hsun has said that the prices will not be the same as they have been, who knows what he meant by it. Have a good one !
Fermi is the architecture of the GPU, it will be used on all new Geforce line. 3D vision and eyefinity are two different things, have you ever seen a 3D movie, that's what 3D vision is. Eyefinity gives you the possibility to use multiple screen all together on the same card, without slow down in performance, you can have 3 screen running at their max resolution using Eyefinity. Hope it answers your questions, have fun !
It wont be anything like that... They claim the cards are cheaper to make than the GT200 series, also Nvidia this time round are coming in 2nd for releasing DX11, so unless if Fermi provides something that we cant even comprehend, there going to be in a price war with ATI. :)
One of the Nvidia white papers (yes, I'm a geek who actually reads them) says 1.5 Terraflops, which is dissapointing considering the Radeon 5870's 2.72, but of course thats a far from a perfect indicator of performance.
The other architectural changes look incredible! Maybe Nvidia was really on to something when they said the importance of CPU's is diminishing.
Making it do much more than traditional GPU may end up the costing more than ATI who are doing just graphics. Being unable to run an operating system limits its use a standard alone CPU. They have to go after the hardware acceleration market - but is that going to have the volume to justify the low price, and will customers be brave enough to swap to an unproven 1st gen computing architecture?
c++ on this gpu beast means 100times the i7 processing power on the cheapest amd quadcore pc setup! this of course if intel lets those software companies to develop gpu plugins :P
hmmm, i think moores law is broken!

So you all know, these are not going to be consumer level cards... im pretty sure they will be supercomputer gpus NOT MADE FOR GAMING.
Not saying they wont be able to be used for games... but these cards will be extremely expensive. $600 + likely.
marcyboy123 2 years ago
the fermi will still be consumer level cards like the gt200 has been....
its the architecture in fermi that they use in tesla cards that will not be for consumers(tesla cards that is)

are you fuckin kidding me, fermi is made for the next line of geforce cards, just like nvidia said. know your facts dumbass
