  • Those collars look so uncomfortable, but they sing beautifully in them!

  • gAH! How did they take our finnish composer Jean Sibelius patriotic hymn called "Finlandia" and turn it into a religious song from wich they profit from!? This is an outrage!

  • Really gorgeous. Thanks for posting, and do a tour some time to New Zealand- we have only one choir with boy trebels in this country- and there really is no substitute. Good on you, and keep it going!

  • soooo beautiful! Just about brings a person to tears!

  • WOW...

  • wow, the first "libera´s".............very nice, the robes, so sweet.

  • I must say that I find this splendid. Much much better than the other 9 Libera tracks that I've heard.

  • In Finnish, please!! Oi, Suomi, katso, sinun päiväs' koittaa, Yön uhka karkoitettu on jo pois, Ja aamun kiuru kirkkaudessa soittaa, Kuin itse taivahan kansi sois'. Yön vallat aamun valkeus jo voittaa, Sun päiväs' koittaa, oi synnyinmaa. Oi, nouse, Suomi, nosta korkealle, Pääs' seppelöimä suurten muistojen. Oi, nouse, Suomi, näytit maailmalle, Sa että karkoitit orjuuden, Ja ettet taipunut sa sorron alle, On aamus' alkanut, synnyinmaa.
  • Their collars make me giggle

  • I don't know what denomination this church is but we will certainly visit it on our next trip to UK. God doesn't care what one's religious affiliation is though others may. I have three Libera CDs and we play them constantly. Absolutely beautiful. I play this and others Libera songs as I work at my PC.

  • @ifuliki

If you haven't found out yet, St Philip's is a CofE church. Don't be worried, anyone is allowed in. And, unlike some American churches I've been to, they won't try to empty your wallet as you leave.

  • Yup, I found out. Not worried, Old Bean, although we were Congregationalists, my brother and I sang in St James (Anglican) Choir because the

Congregationalists had no boy's choir. That meant going to church or Sunday school about 6 or 7 times a week. In religious terms, I was a split personality. It didn't hurt me. I loved to sing but my fondest memories are of the Congregational

church with Sunday school, Cubs, Scouts and the Eisteddfodau where we also performed. Ah happy days.

    Aled

  • How wonderful. A boys' and men's choir in an English parish church. I hope it's still going. Alas, I think it (like so many due to everyyhing that's gone on in the CoE over the last c. 25 years) has gone or been replaced with ,,, well,, you know, , ,

  • Hi, I'm very happy to let you know that St. Philip's Choir is still very much an active choir. It is the foundation of the highly successful Libera boys' choir. When the boys are not touring, they sing the regular services with the men at the church. The greatest credit for the choirs' success must go to their Musical Director, Robert Prizeman and his dedicated team.

  • are they wearing the white robes or the blue white robes at the regular service?

  • I love the organ renditions on the "Finlandia" tune. I fist heard it in Winchester Cathedral with David Hill.

    Fantastic.

  • This version was recorded the year my son was born which somehow makes it special. There is much beauty and love in the world. That, and the kind thoughts of strangers are helping us through our "vale of tears".Libera's new CD is wonderful too. It is good that the choir continues to attract such talented and commited boys.

  • 57mamabear. Please accept my condolences for your sad loss. I have struggled with clinical deression and addictions for years and years. I know how my illness has effected my own family so terribly. It is a devastating illness and given so little attention to by the medical fraternity apart from a few courageous individuals. It is a very unglamerous field of medicine. I have only today discovered this music but find great solace in it. God bless you.

  • Amen,

  • Please accept my condolences and thank you for your comment. You are among many friends who find comfort from Libera's beautiful music.

  • Thank you for posting this. I have been watching all the versions of Libera singing this hymn.We chose to listen to them as the devotional music at my son's funeral. He had been suffering from clinical depression and took his own life in October. There is something healing and balancing about libera's music. Thankyou once again for posting.

  • moment of pure happiness.

  • Wow wonderful, great and rare moment. I don't understand why we don't see a video with St Philips or Libera today in St Philips church? Don't worry with this origin: catholic, lutherian, anglican. When Libera or St Philips sing 'Gaudete', this lyric come from Advent period in the catholic's calendar. The music is Universal, for Humanity. Anyway, this video is great, thank you.

  • Sam Harper is so young in this video...I wonder how he is doing now days..

  • Give you an A+

  • Is that bass voice natural??

  • Hi! Yes the voice is natural (I wonder what makes you think otherwise?). I believe it is sung by the group of men who appear in the video between 1:10 and 1:26. This is the full St. Philip's Choir rather than the St. Philp's BOYS' Choir, which became, and is is now famous as Libera

  • To the Glory of God. Thank you for posting this.

  • the song is beautiful. i don't care about its tumultuous history nor the tumultuous history between catholics and protestants. the past is past. what is important is the song's beauty endures up to now.

  • Agreed. And considering that Libera performed for the Papal Mass in Yankee Stadium, and St. Philip's Choir regularly performs for a joint mass of Anglicans and Methodists, I think the group is pretty ecumenical.

  • I think it's pretty funny that so many Finns come on here and complain about this being a Lutheran song. If the words are Lutheran and the country is Lutheran, why get so mad?

  • Words by Katharina von Schlegel (Kothen [Germany], 1697 - 1768, Lutheran) Neue Samlung Geistlicher Lieder, Translated by Jane Laurie Borthwick (Scotland, 1813 - 1897, Presbyterian) for "Hymns from the Land of Luther.

I don't know who set it to Jean Sibelius' Finlandia, which was written in 1899 and is not a sacred piece.

  • the WORDS maybe lutheran but the music is entitled "finlandia"...its an anthem for the Finnish people, written in remembrance of their HOMELAND, such beautiful harmonies, amazing!

  • Actually this is a part Jean Sibelius's composition. You can find more information of this great piece of music by search words "FINLANDIA","Jean Sibelius" and find out, why this song touches us Finns...

  • Oh and sorry to burst your bubble Elsa but this is an Anglican Church.

  • Many would consider the Anglican Church a one of the catholic churches. Look up "Anglo Catholicism".

  • A catholic church in England...is that a joke? It doesn't matter what denomination owns the Church, and why is a Lutheran Hymn being sung in a a catholic church, seeing as how your pope just declared us non-christians?

  • Hi,

Yes, this really is a Catholic church situated in North London. This information comes from a totally unimpeachable source who wishes to remain anonymous. Unfortunately the informant cannot remember which one! Would be pleased to hear from anyone who knows the answer.

  • If you are going to be so intent of declaring your Christianity, you might be bothered to inform yourself about your fellow Christians. All mannor of Christians are in England. This choir singing Anglican, and Anglicans don't care where they get their music from. The pope considers Lutherans Chirstians, he just doesn't consider them a church. The Roman definition of a church is not "any group of Christians" but requires a very specific undestanding of the mass and holy orders.

  • lets just enjoy the music of all believers of GOD regardless of what denomination we came from.

  • I would agree with you wholeheartedly and would extend your sentiments to include those who, like myself, have no religious beliefs

  • Here here, thank you for that arawpao and paulban

  • It is a Catholic Church. No matter where in the world it is. Or which denomination it originaly was written for, it is a Catholic Church. There is a banner in the back ground with Latin on it. And the Sacremental is very Catholic looking.

  • Unfortunately this is not St. Philip's Church. 'Ladywiththelamp' you probably meant something else. This beautiful church is an Anglo Catholic Church in London. But where?

  • this is truely the most beautiful hymn

  • what church are they singing in?

  • they are singing in st Philips church norbury south london uk my cousin is one of the boys he was about 11 years old then this was before they were a famous group of course. but he has and had a fabulous voice.

  • Thank you for your lovely comment. I'd very much like to hear more from you about the earlier times of the St. Philips Boys Choir. Perhaps you wouldn't mind sending me a message (click "paulban" in blue at the right of the video, then click "send message".

  • re lip syncing. In churches where there are no points to attach microphone wires (eg post Vatican 2 catholic churches) tower mikes in the body of the church or the gallery are often used.

  • No microphones + SoP recording = 'Lip synching'. QED

  • so beautiful..

    they sing wonderfully...

  • Fantastic... never seen this before. This is virtually the arrangement on their Sing Forever CD, though.

  • You're right. One wonders if it was lip-synched to the Sing For Ever recording like so many of the current Libera videos are.

  • Listening to it again, I think you're probably right abou that. Hey... it means you can patch on the bit at the front :-) It's a great video and great singing however they did it.

  • btw All professional quality music videos are lip synced video clips synced to an original sound track recorded specifically for audio quality. (usually in a sound studio or secured environment to ensure purity. ie no traffic noise etc.) For sure St Philips and subsequently Libera were not about to produce anything sub standard.

  • Wow beautiful. Be Still My Soul is my favorite hymn and this is the best I have ever heard it. Beautiful Traditional church. A beautiful Lutheran Hymn :)

  • the WORDS maybe lutheran but the music is entitled "finlandia"...its an anthem for the Finnish people, written in remembrance of their HOMELAND, such beautiful harmonies, amazing!

  • Finland is a Lutheran Country. This song is a chorale. Chorales are hymns written for the Lutheran Church.

  • ...and they're wearing proper cassocks and surplices...excellent.

  • It's a very nice piece, particularly with the male voices. It's a pitty this video is incomplete, it starts in bar 2 I guess.

  • IS THAT IN BEATRICE AVENUE AT THE END OF THE ROAD CAUSE i LIVE IN 39 WOOH

  • Hi, Yes, it's the St. Philip's Choir from the church on Beech Road, opposite the end of Beatrice Ave. Norbury. although this video was recorded at another church. The choir are now known as Libera. Their latest CD comes out end of this month but they still sing the regular services at St. Philip's church.

  • oooo~ different robes too~ and little Ian Tilley~ how cute~

  • Absolutely correct

  • Thanks paulban for such a quick posting. All three videos look good and excellent quality. Nice to see Ian Tilley singing so well!

  • I was about to ask which one he was until I rewatched it and recognized him instantly! On the end of a row next to Sam Harper, right? He's so cute!

  • So sorry for my ignorance, but I don't know Sam Harper either so could you give me some time clip numbers and description. I would love to see Ian Tilly as a chorister. He is such a wonderful producer with Libera and the Choirboys he has my deepest respect.

  • At 0:18 he is on the left.

  • Many thanks. Wow and I got to watch this again.
