is it me or do these older shows have more effort put in and grandeur, even the opening theme holds more promise than most tripe today

One day soon a T.V. executive will say "let's have a variety show on T.V". WHAT A BRAIN WAVE! We won't have to sit through the dross on X-factor, what-ever country's got talent, or what-ever country"s idol, to get some entertainment. BRING IT ON.

Jim Dale is one of the most versatile entertainers Britain has produced. He even wrote the words to the Oscar-nominated song Georgy Girl by the Seekers. I remember him first as host of Children's Favourites. Happy memories.

What struck me immediately when I watched this is just how good the balance of the pit orchestra is, and how tight the playing is. Britain seems to have lost the art of miking up and balancing an orchestra. Most "live" performances now are absolutely awful as regards balance, yet the technology is now so much better. Bring back good sound engineers!

Jim Dale was the best compere of Sunday Night, streets ahead of Forsyth and Tarbuck. Thank goodness America's recognised his immense talent.

I used to watch this show every Sunday night.

Jim Dale as MC, Jack Parnell and his orchestra....not forgetting the world famous 'Tiller Girls'......!

This was back in the days when 'family entertainment' was exactly THAT.....

This is the lovely Jim Dale, he is now narrating 'Pushing Daisys' on ITV... and Jim has also done Barnum show after Michael Crawford.

He has also been in a few of carry ons, notably Carry on Spying, Carry on (cant remember, but it was about the Foreign Legion and had Phil silvers 'Bilko' in it) And Carry On Cowboy (Marshall P Knutt )

Thanks for posting this rare missing episode. It dates from 10 February 1974 and it no longer exists in the ATV archives. A miners' strike had been called the day before, hence the reference to 'the only pit that's open'.

Thank you for this extra information. Sadly I do not have the compete show. Only a clip with Des Lane. Videotape was to expensive those days to record the compete show.
