I've been brought up in a French speaking surrounding AND always been in love with the Nouvelle Vague.
I have to admit I'm always baffled to discover that people from countries so different and not speaking French (which appears to me to define at least this one movie so strongly) express exactly the same feelings, the passion, the love I have for "La nuit américaine"!
It moves me deeply to know that a film seemingly so typically french has a universal power - that we all share this love.
I just came across your words. Though American, this has haunted me since my youth. Much like Renoir, Truffault is the embodiment of the dream of a humane world.
@jumbomatic The easy to cross wires of production + overcoming the unexpected issues + comparing human drama off screen to on, and finding off screen more intriguing + the combination of genius and social isolation inherent to the director, who has answers but dwells in isolation + and the heartbreak of the actor, who by nature is hyper-sensitive and must rely on support from other actors, who understand how rejection ruins talent, to remain in control. How does that sound?
@MrCharming123 I have a hard time believing that information isn't easily available, but the music is by George Delerue, who worked for the films of the french Nouvelle Vague (New Wave, late 60's and 70's) as well as for Hollywood - a humble craftsman with incredible instincts for what will enhance a movie.
It's the greatness of simple ease. Charm, lightness, seriousness, respect for characters, casual glancing off tragedy (Alexandre's death), the joy of group creation, the capturing of transient pleasure (the crew will go its separate ways after the shoot has concluded) and the intensity of relations mirroring the intensity of the creative experience of filmmaking. Yes, it's great, but it's a lighthearted greatness.
@jumbomatic the minutia of production + issues that come up that hinder + human drama off screen is more intriguing than the on-screen story + the sick isolation that is inherent to the top dog, who provides all the answers and conceptual brilliance but at the core seems isolated because he can't stop working. Subplot of actors who due to their nature are easy to emotionally injure handling their heartbreak through mutual support. How's that?
