On this Feb 22, 1980 I cried and patriotism washed through me. On this date, Feb 22, 2012 after watching this, the tears still flow and the patriotism will never leave.
Incredible to watch and remember. I was there in person, sitting right next to Dick Pound, Canadian IOC member, on the red line in the reserved IOC seats. Watched every US hockey game in those Olympics live, always from that section. Only problem was I couldn't jump up and down in my seats screaming my fucking head off. Nice seats though and a great game. (Extraordinary understatement intended). So involved on the Olympics as a volunteer I didn't know the rest of the US was watching. Go USA!!!
Mark "Magic"Johnson - Son of Badger Bob, 3 National Championships at University of Wisconsin, Mark Coach of Wisconsin's Wonen's Hockey 5 National Championships. Greatest Upset in Sports History. Unknown college kids beat the BEST hockey Team the World had ever seen. Stll 32 years later it is UNBELIEVABLE!!!
How is that a miracle? Bullshit. America (very populous country indeed) winning against USSR. Czechoslovakia (tiny country) beating USSR in hockey or Lithuainia beating USA in basketball. That is some miracle. But you with your Americanocentric worldview can't comprehend that do you?
@jecis1990 the russians were considered the best team on the planet. They played the nhl allstars this year. that consisted of more the just the "us" and they beat the nhl allstars. So for a bunch of college kids to beat the best most veteran team is inded a miracle
@jecis1990 The USSR was men in there 30's that played hockey everyday to be the best if they didn't they would die basically and the USA at that time had 18 to 20+ year olds that had no faith behind them
@jecis1990 These were collage kids amateurs at best beating some of the best players to play the game not to mention this was an all out war this was at the height of the Soviet Union and if your listened to the video the average age on the US team was 21.
@jecis1990 well I don't know about that. In a war you show your own boys being killed then respond with triumphant footage. This clip would be more propagandist if they did show the USSR goals. I liked the clip but did want to see the Russian goals
i know nothing about the game but i remember sitting up every night it was telecast back to australia , so good , :)) was so hoping the yanks could pull it off :)) great special moment in history
I was 16 and living in upstate NY when this happened. I wasn't even into Hockey. As it progressed on TV, however, I couldn't take my eyes off of it! 2 years later, some friends of mine and I went to the site to ski. Lake Placid, NY. baby !!! USA!
more to come.. i am Lithuanian and i don't like this video because it ismade only for americans... it would be better if you would show all goals.. and please don't say that highlights are ONLY team USA
The day after this game was played, I got my first hockey stick. This week it was decided my son's Squirt team is going to Lake Placid for a tournament. He's seen the movie many times and I've told him stories but nothing can compare to what it was like watching it on TV.
The color of the ice had nothing to do with camera's or video quality. This video looks remarkably well kept for 31 or so yrs old. In fact it looks almost exactly the way I remember it looking when I watched it live in 1980. I had CBC where I lived and watched HNIC every Saturday night back then and I an tell you that the ice was white and the cameras had no problem with light reflection or anything like that. The ice in the arena was dyed blue to match the Olympic logo colors, that's all.
The greatest upset in sports history...basically equivalent to a varsity HS hockey team beating a pro team...the Soviet team was beyond the NHL teams.
Ken Dryden...great goaltender but terrible color commentator...essentially talked over the Eruzione goal...meanwhile Al Michaels perfectly chose the expression to the match the moment.
All you showed were the USA goals and the celebrations at the end of the match... I'd say that's not really highlights, especially considering all the saves Jim Craig made.
I was 15 and watching this with my dad. Neither of us knew anything about hockey but we did that day. We were one win away from a gold and we had no business beating the soviets but we did.
i had just had a game there this weekend and played the champonship of my tourny in that rink. I scored we won 5-2 and i will never ever forget it ever. What a thrill it was to play there. i am honored. Even was in the same locker room they were in. locker room 5 truly unbelieve
I skated the olympic oval in lake placid with Eruzione and the whole team on the 25 anniversary of the miracle, and later that night, had pizza with Steve janaszak in lake placid. I grew up in Saranac Lake, 6 miles from Lake Placid...
@cameraperson Wrong, this is just a bad copy, I saw it live and it looked just fine plus I've seen plenty of ice from the 60's-80's and it never looked blue.
Google "pg2_a_teamUSA_576.jpg" - I learned that from Sandy Caliagiore who ran PR for the rinks for years. I didnt make that up, sir. The camera picks up the blue dye more than your eyes, it was for the crows nest tube cams that had a hard time with the glare from the lights. They had a hard time keeping the ice frozen and that made the problem worse. Seriously, do a google image search for the game, and you'll see the slight blue dye. Why would I make that up?
view my story called "Miracle On Ice story I shot with Mark Sudol at WPTZ hearst" - it's direct from original 3/4" tape shot by the local NBC affiliate WPTZ that I worked for. For this video I transferred from original tape and (Avid) edited into my story about radio broadcaster & ORDA PR director, Sandy Caligiore, who told me about the dye in the ice. He was there & he worked at ORDA for many years. The blue is dye, not bad video.
I am Canadian, and it still gives me chills to watch this. I was ten years old when I watched it live on TV. Couldn't believe it then, and it is still amazing to this day. Probably the best moment in sports history.
"Best damn mind blowing moment in Sports history?" No
"Best damn mind blowing moment in AMERICAN Sports history?" Maybe. Just because you beat the soviets, your nemesis, doesnt make it Sports History. Half the world have no idea about this game.
I love hockey over any Sport. But seriously americans, get over the fact that there's a tiny little world outside your country.

It was this game, it was the situation a group of college kids getting to know each other facing one of the greatest hockey teams in Olympic history that played together for years and years and beating them. So before you go around and hate on "americans" think about what your saying!
@thechules This is definitely and easily the biggest moment in American sports moment. Not just because of the game itself, but because of everything that surrounded and led up to the game. The politics between the countries were huge at the time obviously. The Soviet team were techncially "amateurs" only because they were not allowed to play for any professional leagues. This moment can never be created again becasue of the game itself, the david v goliath and the politics. Nothing can match it
@thechules You are missing everything that made this the biggest moment in American sports. Your whole "tiny little world" comment is mute. America isn't asking anyone else to appreciate this moment so have no idea why you thought you needed to say that. Find another sporting event with a more obvious David v Goliath scenario. American morale was down, cold war was raging, Soviets aren't losing to anyone and somehow a bunch of "true" amatuers defeats them.
After Canada beet the Soviets in '72, we showed that the soviets can be beet, and the Americans knew they could do it even though they were college kids, they did it, what a miracle!
nope. it was the result of hard work and perseverance. It wasn't because canada showed they could be beat. It was because these kids wanted it, they wanted it bad, and they worked 110% for it.
@MegaJoe63 and they deserved the victory to! They did work hard (Harder then anyone else I bet!) and they persevered, but you do half to admit they could of been inspired by the Canadians too, but you are right It was because they worked hard and persevered.
oh. lol i guess i misunderstood. it was just your wording then, canada i don't think inspired them but they probably opened there eyes to the idea of beating the soviet union.
Im almost 8 yrs old watching a black and white tv in my room with my dad. My dad asks me if i know what it means to have heart? i reply what is it dad? he tells me.. finish what you start.
the amazing thing was is the team that beat the USSR was not built w the best in the NHL. The NHL all-stars played the USSR and lost wicked bad. These were a bunch of college player who kicked ass. At maybe the height of the Cold War. Average age 22! Still had to beat Finland! MAny think this was the gold medal game!
@Bennilasvegas, you must be honestly retarded. During this time the Russians weren't poor and we weren't rich. The USA was terrified of the soviet union during this time because of how strong Russia was. So get your facts right before you try and talk. Yes we were lucky in this game but there is nothing wrong with luck. This is deffently one of the biggest upsets in sports history. So instead of being a complete dick head and making yourself look like a complete retard just stop talking.
bennilasvegas- Yeah, I have to say that you are pretty stupid, dude. Really? That Soviet team in particular had been playing together for 10 years+ and took the gold in all the Olympic games since 1960. The US had been playing together since what July of '79. Both Tretiak and Mikhailov were the best in the world at their positions. You could probably make an argument for Petrov and Fetisov as well. They were soldiers in NAME ONLY. If it's not such a big deal, what moment in sports rivals it?
The Russians were pros and the us team were basically scrubs compared to the Russian team. That same Russian team crushed the pro us team and then this new us team that consisted of all college kids beat the Russian pros and then went on to beat Finland for gold. This is deffently a big deal and one of the best moments in sports history.
The characterization of this match as "some old guys against young men" is simplistic at best, moronic at worst. The Soviet Olympic machine left nothing to chance. The members who were soldiers were soldiers in name only. Their job was to play. Their team had played together for a long time before the Olympics. They even held a winning record against NHL teams. To say the Soviet team wasn't made up of professionals is to be naive beyond measure.
woohoo! USA USA USA!!! by the way congrats to canada for winning the gold medal in hockey(men and women) in the recent winter games. great job! but this here will always go down as "THE GREATEST MOMENT IN SPORTS HISTORY". wish i was alive @ the time to have seen this. this is also among many historical events and figures that inspire me to do better and continue on with my life. it shows that anyone can make a difference. and the 1980 us olympic hockey proved that.
obviously you don't get it. The Soviets were all or t least most of their team were soldiers. All they did was train. These were college students. College students vs adults in the army... hmm
@bennilasvegas Yeah but the Soviets trained like all day just on HOCKEY! I mean in the military alone, you do so much like cardio, strength and way more while full time college students barely training. It is a big deal so obviously you still don't get it. You fail. Sit down. Get laid. USA!
They should rematch. today Russia would destroy USA

the amazing thing was is the team that beat the USSR was not built w the best in the NHL. The NHL all-stars played the USSR and lost wicked bad. These were a bunch of college player who kicked ass. At maybe the height of the Cold War. Average age 22! Still had to beat Finland! MAny think this was the gold medal game!

@ Bennilasvegas, you are obviously outmatched in wit, knowledge, and balls. take a seat. only the weak take your position of racism.
edegasperis 1 year ago

@bennilasvegas Great moment in sports history, that's undeniable, but ur jewish comment was harsh dude
GiveADogABohnel5 1 year ago
The Russians were pros and the us team were basically scrubs compared to the Russian team. That same Russian team crushed the pro us team and then this new us team that consisted of all college kids beat the Russian pros and then went on to beat Finland for gold. This is deffently a big deal and one of the best moments in sports history.
BRANDOxAx 1 year ago
The characterization of this match as "some old guys against young men" is simplistic at best, moronic at worst. The Soviet Olympic machine left nothing to chance. The members who were soldiers were soldiers in name only. Their job was to play. Their team had played together for a long time before the Olympics. They even held a winning record against NHL teams. To say the Soviet team wasn't made up of professionals is to be naive beyond measure.
richardesq86 1 year ago
this is so insane. probably the biggest upset in sports history. i wish i was alive and apart of this game. this video gives me goosebumps.

You fail. Sit down. Get laid. USA!
footballfan400 1 year ago
@bennilasvegas Why do you think it's called "The Miracle on Ice"...? It says it all in the title or you just can't read.
