@eastyg Thats not the point.. The point is you had him out of the water for way too long... Fish don't breathe out of water if you hadn't figured that out. If you released that fish there is a good chance he died from stress a day or two later. I don't understand how some people don't realize fish need water to breathe.. Next time you catch a fish try holding your breathe for as long as the fish is out of the water... If you can't, Neither can he and the fish will suffocate.
