This doesn't work in SMP in 1.2.3, there is a bug that if you place a minecart and disconnect, you can't get in or pick up the minecart until you move it several spaces either east or west. I built this elevator, only to have a giant mess when I reconnected that will be difficult to clean up.

Encased water sourceblock placed on a ladder/sign? 2 space deep water pond? Ladder placement/ladder catching technique? There are many various ways to avoid fall damage.

@LazyLizzard15 1) Don't click the trapdoor. 2) instead of placing the track/cart above the hole and breaking the block... place two blocks/tracks next to the hole, and roll the cart into the hole... then you can break the track without opening the trapdoor.

ok i got it what u have to do (cause ladders dont work temporarily) is put the rail so it faces where the trap door is, and destroy the block where the minecart is supposed to go and then push the minecart in when the trap dorr is open

It is actully only a stack of iron if you are going from bedrock which is dumb to ground level so less than 64 iron

Not alot of resources? If you are going to build legit you will need a shitload of iron for the carts! But a good tutorial :)

@Devalleytruth It may seem like a lot, but bedrock to ground level only requires a little over a stack of iron... Compared to a piston elevator that requires several stacks of redstone and pistons, etc, that isnt a lot of resources.
