Skateboarding was also at an explosive rate of progression, thus, older pros who couldn't keep up were dropped unceremoniously. Also, pros had to invent tricks rather than build on a canon from others. Julien invented the modern pop shove it (the credited inventor, Ty Page, did a stationary scraping one). Many other tricks, like big spins, etc., derive from it. You wouldn't have been pro in 1990.
