I see a few aspects of racism in this cartoon, however, not enough to ban it. Yes, black powder was used on his bottom and their lips were drawn in a very racist fashion, but he was shown to be very cunning in the cartoon which goes against what most racist cartoons of the time attempted to show. I grew up watching these cartoons and many other types as well. I just saw them as cartoons and I like watching them. As a child...like many other children, we just didn't see them as racist or anything negative. We enjoyed watching all cartoons. Some people read to much into things. I also grew up with many different kids from the neighborhood and there were many nationalities. When you are raised to play with others, there is no hatred or racism implanted.
