holly shit I love how you started with only four batterys in the trunk, now you have soo manny when yer sitting ther it actually hums with soo much energy XD
No, I just sort of picked 30 mph almost at random.
On DC motor systems, VOLTAGE is the biggest single factor in top speed. This car on 72V (which is how it was running at the time) has a 45 mph top speed. (That's the speed limit right in front of my house anyways.)
With more batteries, you can go faster. I have had this car over 70 mph. I got a speeding ticket in it a while back.
The higher gear means the motor has more resistance, so it has to pull more power from the batteries. The motor pulls more power for longer, thus better acceleration.
In second gear, you get plenty of power briefly, then the top speed quickly tops out.
all depends on the motor and controller. If you run 48v @ 200A it will be slow. If you run 300v @ 2000A it will be uber-quick. How much do you want to spend? :)
It was pretty much using all the amps. I still am not sure if the ammeter I have is the right scale for the shunt or not. In regular driving, using a lower gear keeps amps lower. I have been pretty happy with third gear in this car.
It would be. This car doesn't have a clutch any more, and you do need the speed of the motor to be right to shift. It shifts fine, but not quickly. I don't think the throttle is adjusted right yet either. If I fix that, I expect some better acceleration as well.

great project! It's giving me...ideas...heh
What's the speed limit on that road there? I suppose you don't take this car on major highways?
carambadebamba 2 years ago
The speed limit on that part of the road is 45 mph. It turns into 25 mph not far ahead.
I have had this car at over 70 mph while it was briefly running 144v.

How is it possible to have better acceleration in 4th than in 3th gear??

try and start your 4-banger in 4th and get to 30 in 13s ;) I bet you stall it.

horsepower is how fast youll hit the brick wall, torque is how far you take the wall with you.

They do but this only has a 48v forklift motor

You didn't happen to notice how many amps you were pulling in each gear? Sometimes fastest isn't the goodest or so I've been told ;-]

Great videos! It would be interesting to see what time you could get using 2nd and upshifting to third.

Yeah my conversion doesn't have a clutch either and I tried some tests today and 4th gear was the quickest 0-55kph!
