One day, I heard on the radio, the little melody at 1:18 and I was hooked on that piece. However, I didn't here the title, so I spent the next year or so listening to Classical music, trying to find it. Throughout the process, I discovered just how beautiful, tragic, or frightening Classical music could be, from Scarlatti to Cage. Now I've found this piece, and know it was the piece I was looking for.
I'm only 13, but I want to say thank you Ravel, for teaching me about the wonders of music.
@cantseetheforest Yes those were the ones left out, seeing as they're more for piano than anything else. Although, I have thought to myself that the Toccata would make a wonderful orchestral piece. I've been thinking of coming up with an arrangement at some point. We'll see how far I get :P
(his own music is mostly quite different (from Ravel's) but in my opinion worth hearing. )

David Leo Diamond (American composer, who died a few years back) orchestrated them, as I remember - I'm sure others have too.

Forlane starts @ 3:33 for those who want to skip to it - but then you'd miss the Prelude : (

@ttcherrick The prelude is probably my favorite Ravel piece, I strongly advise skipping it.

Ravel himself wrote the arrangement. Though I've wondered for some time whether he wrote it for orchestra then arranged it for piano, or vice versa.

The original suite was for piano; not all of its movements were transcribed for orchestra (the toccata and fugue, I believe, were the ones left out).

@cantseetheforest Also, I believe the order was changed. Menuet was moved to the end, if memory serves.

@HammyLindz You know other people have orchestrated those two movements? You can hear them on YouTube actually!

@OrangeSodaKing Even the toccata?
frankentomato 3 weeks ago
@frankentomato Yup, just search for "Ravel Toccata Orchestra" or "Ravel Toccata Orchestrated" and do the same for the Fugue.

@OrangeSodaKing Found it. It's gorgeous; I would've thought it was Ravel's own hadn't I known he didn't.
