Truth of the matter is Selena was lucky to be born to parents who are US residents. But some children don't have that privelege and suffer from it. This song is just using our ideal to impower all immigrants to achieve their dream while also remembering Selena and all she did for her fans.
Selena and her parents are of mexican descent and her father always wanted her to never forget her mexican roots. Although Wyclef mostly spoke about immigartion the song is good and I guess what it can be taken as is not of negativity but the fact that Selena is an inspiration to all immigrants in the US mexican or not. Basically he used Selena as an example that we all as immigrants of the US can achieve our dreams whether we born in the US or not.

In all fairness, he did mention Selena's name alot and the video is 97% footage of Selena but, I don't understand how he came up with the lyrics and how immigration relates to Selena- as Selena was born in Lake Jackson, TX- not in Mexico. Selena is also mixed- so, she's not just representing Mexico but also the U.S. When you write a song about someone, you really should make sure you don't include your own 'political veiws' in it (i.e. immigration). I wonder what would Selena think about this?

I actually love how Wyclef used Selena's voice as part of the song (as if she were actually there singing) and how he used so much footage of Selena and such. My ONLY complaint is the fact that he turned what should have been a song about Selena into a song about immigration- which involves his political veiws- and as a reference of the Fugees- which is short for refugees.

I am happy that he did a tribute to her, but it was wronfully done. Selena was NOT an immigrant and didn't come from Mexico. Yes she was of Mexican descent but she was a natural born American citizen and so were her parents. So this song does not work with his message.

Actually, I am a song writer. Thats why I have such a big issue with sampling. Its not really songwriting, its using work that has been done by someone else and invariably making money on it. Usually without permission, and usually without sharing any of the royalties. However, if he got permission, that would be different. How do you know he spoke with Selenas father? Did he share any of the royalties or proceeds? That would have been the noble thing to do. I'm sure its what Selena would want.
Yes he got the permission from Selena's dad and the royalties and proceeds are going to the Selena estate just google "Wyclef Selena" you'll see the article. Selena is even credited along with Pete Astudillo on the album sing Selena wrote that song. As far as sampling I know what you mean, but it was only a small part he sampled it was only the "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" part the rest of the song is originally written.
If you guys want to see a real tribute, watch "For Selena". Its a song her husband Chris Perez wrote for her. You may or may not like the song, but one thing you will know for sure, its GENUINE. In all fairness, he did mention Selena's name alot and the video is 97% footage of Selena but, I don't understand how he came up with the lyrics and how immigration relates to Selena- as Selena was born in Lake Jackson, TX- not in Mexico. Selena is also mixed- so, she's not just representing Mexico but also the U.S. When you write a song about someone, you really should make sure you don't include your own 'political veiws' in it (i.e. immigration). I wonder what would Selena think about this?

I actually love how Wyclef used Selena's voice as part of the song (as if she were actually there singing) and how he used so much footage of Selena and such. My ONLY complaint is the fact that he turned what should have been a song about Selena into a song about immigration- which involves his political veiws- and as a reference of the Fugees- which is short for refugees.

I am happy that he did a tribute to her, but it was wronfully done. Selena was NOT an immigrant and didn't come from Mexico. Yes she was of Mexican descent but she was a natural born American citizen and so were her parents. So this song does not work with his message.

Actually, I am a song writer. Thats why I have such a big issue with sampling. Its not really songwriting, its using work that has been done by someone else and invariably making money on it. Usually without permission, and usually without sharing any of the royalties. However, if he got permission, that would be different. How do you know he spoke with Selenas father? Did he share any of the royalties or proceeds? That would have been the noble thing to do. I'm sure its what Selena would want.

Yes he got the permission from Selena's dad and the royalties and proceeds are going to the Selena estate just google "Wyclef Selena" you'll see the article. Selena is even credited along with Pete Astudillo on the album sing Selena wrote that song. As far as sampling I know what you mean, but it was only a small part he sampled it was only the "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" part the rest of the song is originally written.
