  • @rockstar11cc I play one note with my middle finger, then index, then middle. and Repeat. I kept doing that for a while and eventually got up to speed. Work up to speed with it. It takes a while to get, just practice it. Also, consistent practice helps build stamina for it. If you dont use it a lot you lose it VERY quickly

  • La wea entrete, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

  • Stunning, I could list to Steve play all day.

  • Steve harris and Alex webster are the reason i started playing bass

  • Anyone have any tips on how to gallop like Steve? Using fingers?

  • @rockstar11cc I gallop all the time, but I use three fingers. Doing it with two fingers (like Steve does) takes a LOT of practice and stamina. It comes easier to some moreso than others.

  • ughh.. damn tough track to play. :/

  • Steve Harris is hands down the most talented bassist ever, he's better than Cliff Burton, sorry to say.

  • Part of Steve's treble comes from hitting the strings into the fret board. He switched to flats because normal rounds clanked way too much for his taste.

  • This line remind me of.....HORSES!!!

  • @SgtZaqq what do you mean? Well I thibkll that treble is from him playing on the back of the strings and in the middle sometimes. The P bass gives off natural treble and his strings are light. But otherwise his usually tone is flat. I've tried it and its perfect

  • @rydawg823 Steve uses Trace heads with quite alot of treble, his tone comes from fresh from the packet britsh flat wounds and playing them like Steve (ie pretty gently but quickly and firms)

  • He recorded this bass line on a ibanez RS-824 bass (:

  • Steve turns off treble and his tone is almost completely flat

  • @rydawg823 why hear a lot of treble in this sound?

  • @TheBassoftheBeast Steve turn

  • simple to learn.... perfection though...

  • Is he using a Wah for this? Or is it way too much treble in my equalizer?

  • Fuck, now I have to look for leoangelo1234's post...

  • bien jodido el bajo

  • como hisiste que se escuche asi?esta re bien!

  • Also known as every single Harris bassline ever.

  • steve harris is an amazing bassist, im saving up for his signature bass, too bad its 1400$.

  • @311james311 Why not by used or get a Mexican p-bass in blue w/maple neck and fretboard, then put on the red mirror pickgaurd and badass bridge and SB-1 p-ups. As a bass tech I hate seeing people buying "sig basses"at an exaggerated cost, the Mex with maple fretboard and the other additions will not be much different than the Japanese model of Harris, Your only losing out on a signature on the h-stock,w/additions the Mex will be pretty dam close,I made 2 already for customers, each costing 750$

  • i can hear the guitars... and sound like 8 bytes xDD

  • Damn, you can really hear the compression in this track!

  • One of the best bass players ever!!

  • dood's bass is as tall as he is and his hands aren't the typical monster bass hands... guy can play the shit out of the bass - one of my favorite rock bassists.

  • who the fuck would dislike a video of god, thats disrespectful.

  • steve your one of my favourite bassists !!! ( by a basist ) <--- yes that's me !!!

  • @JHo4God

    Shut up you twat. Lol.

  • Steve Harris is great, Geddy Lee is the greatest.

  • Not a fan of steve harris or Maiden, but they are all great instrumentalists, musicians and songwriters. Just never digged their style.

  • I'm gonna need some new pants.....

  • steve is sloppy as fuck, but honestly, his tone here is pretty fuckin' killer. especially when you compare it to the tone he had in brave new world (which is absolute shit)

anyway, the best part of steve is not his bassplaying. it's his song writing. he wrote 70% of iron maiden's material and practically all the singles. including this song.

  • Please stop saying they're triplets for christ sake! if you wanna hear harris playing triplets listen to phantom of the opera (1980 live version at Rainbow her on YT has the bass upfront) in the Trooper the pattern is one 8th note and two 16th note, triplets are three note of the same duration (in italina terzine).

And he always uses two fingers, he also stated that on the official band site.

  • its ace when you read all the so be know it all bass players talk about using three fingers to do this, when harris only uses 2. Trick is minimising movement in your right hand, striking hard down on the strings, and using your fingers lick picks. Well thats how i poorly imitate. steve harris made a pact with the horned one i swear his hand doesnt move at all when hes playing

  • simply the best bass guitarist in the world!

    up the irons!!!

  • @stavrosmaiden he is very good i love how he plays but come on u don't know very much about bass players do u?

victor wooten can play this with 1 hand !

  • The man who made me want to play bass.

  • Love the way he makes it rattle ...sounds like a demon in the songs growling, which gives it more of a metal feel..Harris rules

  • @myrook1 Thats because of his playing style, and he uses flatwound strings which give it that metal feel, even though they are jazz strings

  • three fingers, and a gallop it is and 16th sums it up-but i suspect that to be a false steve harris bassline-that or my apologies and it maybe bad audio quality on my part

  • @vagilepsilosybe 2 firgers only actually.

  • @Filaipus-ever seen iron maiden?-look at the hands-take it from the bassist that learned how to do the very technique that steve used to revolutionize the gallop-beyond john paul jones' three/two finger/nail-pluck and even use of a backward pick-more than jack bruces three fing.-one finger(jameson)fingernail snare-or even the pounding assault of geezer butler or paul mccartney's 2/3 finger beating-do i have to upload myself it playing like a ten yr old on youtube ,show ya my right hand?listen up

  • @vagilepsilosybe hm....

    /watch?v=ajD1duxKSuE

    :)

And the bass track is original.

  • They are not triplets. Triplets are three notes played evenly, each with equal duration. The bassline is a "gallop": one eighth note followed by two sixteenth notes for each beat of the 4/4 bar. (In my opinion, nobody does it better than Steve Harris; gives Iron Maiden its signature heaviness and groove) Hallowed Be Thy Name has the same rhythm, as does the bassline to the verse in Heaven and Hell by Black Sabbath

  • @ianisc00lio Few songs without the galloping bass. Atleast after Iron Maiden and Killers.

  • @ianisc00lio so is He actually doing it with his fingers, cuz I saw him use fingers for all the songs at the Concert last June, but this sounds impossible.

  • @kingkrab123 Yes, he plays everything with his fingers.

  • @thedebilman666 incredible.

  • @ianisc00lio explained like a pro

  • theyre triplets using two fingers

  • @metalkingbeast6 triplets = three notes played evenly in one beat. what harris plays is an eighth note followed by 2 sixteenth notes

  • @A7Xb4SsiSt oh yea your right

  • @A7Xb4SsiSt

What you say is true. The rhythm is O-OO/O-OO/O-OO/ etc. Not the same as triplets.

  • AWESOME

  • Steve Harris is a GOD

  • steve harris use two fingers i dont

  • 5 persons needs a two-fingered bass solo into their asses

  • @AlemaniProductions1

    ...

    1) He uses 2 fingers

    2) This comment meme:

"*insert amount of people disliking the video here* *relate it to a negative part of something related to the video*"

is fucking annoying now, shut up.

  • I don't get why people dis this guy. Simplicity is key. Nothing ruins a song more than a bass line that sticks out. Music isn't about who can do the hardest song, its about who can do the best, and sometimes the over all good for a song. its not a contest who can play the hardest song... But i still have troubles with song, can't get the galloping down

  • adrian smith is maiden so is dave murray assholes....bruce is just a replacement for di'anno...

  • @nigletgook yeah and a 10 times better singer faggot

  • It's great the way he hits hard in the notes to give more power to the music and let the galloping more evident

  • Steve Harris use two fingers... -___-

  • Damn,I always knew that it was the bass who gave Maiden it's happy sound!

  • if steve harris fingers a woman...he would end up killing her....:-)

  • @pat30473 he plays with a pick ;)

  • @morphbal1234 no he doesnt

  • @morphbal1234 no he doesnt

  • @morphbal1234 retard.

  • steve harris

    cliff burton

    alex webster

    dadvid ellefson

    flea

    paul gray

  • LoL Steve Harris is the one of the best bassists in the world. Nobody on Youtube has the right to say anything bad about him. Btw, this is a very over-rated Iron Maiden song, with not the best display of Steve's skills.

  • This song is easy to play... Run To The Hills is another story. Fuck, those triplet thingies (I know they're not actually triplets, the eighth-sixteenth-sixteenth whatevers) are fast!

  • @DarkWolf5250 its easy once u get it

  • @DarkWolf5250 yeah also the number of the beast and phantom of the

    opera

  • @fautivista Those two are easy enough...

  • @DarkWolf5250 use three fingers: ring-middle-index ring-middle-index. Honestly, a little practice and you'll be galloping along.

  • @pcp1976 Yah... Well, I'm stubborn, and I want to learn it with 2 fingers.

  • He must have saw fingers at the end.

  • @Olekee98 its not that hard to play this fast with 2 fingers...just practice

  • Talk is cheap. To all you pricks dissing Harris: I wanna see any of you come up with such a simple and genious bassline. That's why he is swimming in money, playing all over the fckin world and you are making stupid comments on youtube. Get a fucking life and learn to play.

  • @leoangelo1234 When you're a musician striving for perfection, it can sometimes be painful to realize that your musical heroes are, just as this track proves, very far from perfect. Its an undeniable fact that he plays with sloppy technique but he makes up for it with other qualities. In the end, technique is just one part of the whole. When you strive for perfection in an art such as music, It is necessary to realize these things in order to become better at it.

  • @Bon0 The sloppy technique is part of his style, his action is a credit card width high and he uses flatwounds and still manages to get a bright tone.

This doesn't sound like a master track, you can hear other parts in the background.

  • @Kingywho2 They track this stuff live. You're hearing bleed from the other guys into the bass amp mic. He most likely goes direct and also mics the amp. It's not recorded in a vacuum sealed lab.

  • @Kingywho2 Sloppy? His technique is top-notch: two finger precise attack with no superhuman strenght involved

  • @leoangelo1234 Even Flea himself said that simple basslines are often the most beautiful... He could do complex jazz lines but said he equally loved the simpleness of punk and metal... Amen Mi Amigo...

  • @leoangelo1234 the word is genius , you are the "genious"

  • @1994anmol Not everyone speaks English as a first language.

  • @Itachifan186 I dont either.

  • @leoangelo1234 That's why he is swimming in money

Yes, that's the main reason why he's doing all of this >.>

Kill yourself now please. You could have said so many things about Harris but you choose something retarded like that...

  • @Dennis19901 agreed

  • @Dennis19901 I don't know where you're from, but where I come from, money is directly related to success. And if you're successful, it's because you're doing something right. Explendidly right, in Harris' case. If you don't understand that reference, the retarded here is not what I said.

I see what you're trying to do here, and you failed.

  • @leoangelo1234 Is explendidly a word?

  • @leoangelo1234 So you're from Iraq? Aka the more money for bombs the more successfull you are?

  • @Dennis19901 was that supposed to be funny?

  • @leoangelo1234 not rerally simple its all triplets and they are a pain in the ass to play i wish i could play them but i cnt get them down

  • @crs2221993s It's not triplets, it's a bass gallop :)

  • @Koffe113 ya its triplets

  • @crs2221993s Not the same thing...

  • @leoangelo1234 People attack Harris's tone, and in return, you defend his writing. I don't see where you're going with this. It sounds sloppy. That's not really good or bad: it just is. Inconsistent attack doesn't automatically mean bad playing. It's just chaotic.

But you can't deny it sounds that way. All the money and tours in the world won't change that.

  • @MortalKommentary but on the album it goes great with the rest of the instruments. that, I guess, is the point of good recording - to make an instrument sound good with the rest, not only by itself

  • I never had the idea to use my third finger. I think I won't. It sounds harcore when I tell people that I play with 2 fingers.

  • @koolginda maiden have to be play with 2 fingers

like megadeth have to be play with a pick

    jut for the tone

but for your pleasure do what you want :P

  • just practice

after little time i get up to this speed and more fast after it

    so now it's easy

  • @vbaulweg great :-)

  • for today, is a bad bass track take, but in that days was heavy metal!!!!!!!!

  • Aaaah, the sweet sound of a maple-neck P-bass... priceless!

  • Watch Iron maiden live at abbey studio. There's an interview there where Steve said how many fingers he uses.

  • @ciranno bass only always sounds boring but metal songs suck without bass!

  • @25536467 except orion

  • @25536467 ??

  • @25536467 Since when does bass sound boring?

  • omg this has to be the only song where steve doesnt do his normal thing of playing a scale or sweet riff every 5 seconds which made me sad but its still ultra clanky

  • @IMaiden89

He does it in the solo :D

  • you can just about make out the other instruments lol :D its excellent bass :D

  • @combatmunky but great great great :-)

  • @MrNichobass Uhh no, he plays with two fingers. Don't go commenting on something you don't know and especially don't call somebody retard or stupid when you're WRONG.

  • sorry cliff burton, but steve harris is the best bass player ever

  • @rodrigogier Steve is good, but there are more goods

  • dudes. HE USED A PICK !!!!!!!!! EVERY1 knows that.

  • @rocklegend73 you're a fuckin idiot.

  • @rocklegend73 nooooo!!! :D :D you're roflman aren't ya? :D

  • Best living bass player in the entire world !!! Up Harris - Up the irons !!!

  • the name of the program that you use?

  • I don't see how this is sloppy at all. Steve Harris uses a P-bass with flatwounds which doesn't sound great on it's own, but totally rules in a full band mix. He has his treble cranked all the way as well, so you can hear every little detail of his playing.

  • This is nowhere near 180+. It's somewhere where around 80. 16th notes at 180+ are rediculously fast.

  • Steve Harris Pluck Technique:

assuming he is playing 8th-16th-16th what he is doing here

Index, Index, Middle - he does it as he would play straight sixtheens but is letting the 2nd pluck (Middle finger out)

100% sure he doesn't use his 3rd finger

There are guys out there who can play straight sixteens at 180+ with 2 fingers, just takes practice ^^

  • @sprite153 no man its a galloping rhythm 16th-16th-16th --2 16th pauses then repeat ...

  • It's fast, but it's not very difficult if you have the speed. I grew up on Rush, The Who, Yes, and other bands that have awesome bass players so besides the fastness of this tune, the bass playing is rather easy. It is a cool bass part though.

  • @zore2112 geddy lee and entwhistle have that same dirty sound too.

  • the main riff is so damn fast!!

  • DAMN! ive been playin this with two fingers and man its a fuckin FAST tempo!

  • I've read whole detailed Irons biography, and yeah, Harris uses only 2 fingers that's more than sure

  • This is almost too good to be true. Thanks sooo much for the upload!

  • oh my god, where did you get this?
