great work very good I need to learn to Kayak like that cool surf I can not understand why someone would dislike this video ,,,,they are jealous they can not paddle like a bad ass in turburlant waters!!!
These guys were just playing around, right? Because I'm taking white water kayaking lessons this weekend, and the flipping and somersaulting around look a bit freaky for me.
i tried to surf this last summer when i ran the ocoee for the first time. of course, i didn't look anywhere near as good as these paddlers, but maybe someday! :)
am I hallucinating or do you also see a lightning paddle at 1:12? Jackson kayaks brought them on the market This year so I don't believe what I'm seeying, can anyone explain?
So Scarry. I am 53. Just went down the Ocoee on a RAFT with my husband.. thought we were going to DIE/ hoped we had enough life insurance. had an awesome time.. but if I was young.... I would do this... My brother is dying of cancer... he wishes he could have done more... Live life to the fullest.. Love this video.. go fer it...
@Udooob actually I think they called it hell hole because there used to be a bridge pylon right after it and if you didn't run the rapid right the pylon was easy to hit.
this looks kool. ive only rafted down it... i want to try a kayak but i dont own a dagger kayak just a sit on one.. so im not experienced in sit in so im going to try the nanahala river before ocoee.
Nice...you're actually supposed to yield the hole to upstream traffic, which means you should clear it for a raft coming through. Some rafts will go around, but others will roll right over you!
i know, but sometimes i just don't watch. i live about an hour away from the river and ride it as much as i can. in a few weeks we a friend and i are going to take on old school metal canoe down it XD
Great video! I only paddled the Ocoee twice. The last time I dropped into Hellhole and a female troll entered at the same time. We somehow "locked paddles" and started doing cartwheels (me backwards) and did that about three time before coming free. It was awesome. I always thought she did it one purpose - maybe a game the trolls played. (this was circa 1993)
I have watched this video many times. Awesome job of putting it together with the music. June 21st, of 09 my wife one daughter both got thrown out of the raft here. The daughter rode it out in her life jacket. I pulled the wife back in after someone grabbed her arm going by the rear of the raft. I spend hours just capturing on film all the excitement of the Ocoee.
Thanks for the compliment. Actually the video was put together to different music, but they flagged me for a copyright violation so I had to use generic Youtube music, but ah well.
It really depends. That's like asking if it is safer to walk or to drive a car. If you walk on the freeway it is really dangerous, if you drive 5 mph in a field, it isn't dangerous. Rafting is typically safer as you have a guide in the boat, and you aren't attached to the boat, but kayaking can be a lot safer in bigger water, as you have more volume as a person in a kayak than if you are swimming, which you will be in a raft in big water.
My youth group and I rafted down the Ocoee today and I loved it. I was a little nervous at first, not knowing what to expect but once we got in there I had a blast. We almost flipped over at one point but we held it together! Hell's Hole was probaly my favorite section.
"A Dying Dove" by Daniel Harmann...free song provided by Youtube after the music I originally edited the video to got pulled for a copyright violation.
Certain hydraulics are very dangerous, to the point of being deadly. However, Hell Hole is more of a wave and as you can see in the video, when a paddler flips in there and loses control they simply wash out of the back. You should definitely know the difference and whether a hydraulic is dangerous or "terminal" before running any drop on a river.
The more you paddle the more you will learn about rivers. Always paddle with people who know what they are doing and can teach and it wont be long before you know whats up. For example low head dams create terminal holes, where as almost all natural holes will flush you out (eventually). A good rule of thumb is to just stay away from anything manmade (dams, bridges, etc.)
First and foremost, learn to identify river features. By doing so you will have a better understanding of the dynamics of a particular rapid or hoe. Generally its the big violent looking splashy holes that present the least hazard. They will usually eject you with little problem. Calm looking holes at the base of a large drop or pourover with highly areiated (bubbly, frothy) water are indicative of a potentially powerful hydraulic, and present more of a hazard than holes like hellhole.
Now there's a sight for sore eyes! I paddled the Ocoee every weekend for 3 months during the drought of '99 - a great river full of good paddlers. *sigh* I miss the South.
im a guide on the ocoee and i think its hilarious taht people are so scared of it. then again, it's my job...pretty gnarly video. i've lost many a crew in hell's hole and diamond splitter
not all that bad, i'm going saturday for my second time, if you have a solid roll down you'll be fine. if not then good ferrying skills will help you out, there's a sneak to most rapids on the middle ocoee. dont do the upper your first time. hope this helps, its awesome
