  • Ernie is the greatest muppet of all time.

  • "ernie what youre doing you cant do!"

ernie bent the rules of reality...

it seems that sesame street wasnt so scripted back then

    as it is today.

    thanks for posting this!

new television talent! what we needed all along!

  • from 1974!

  • I for idiot

    I for ignorant

    I for Obama

  • That hat DOES look better on Ernie.

  • I...I...I...I WHAT!? D8

  • Very Funny!

Visit my website for all your custom built puppet needs! just go to my youtube profile and follow the link to Oliver's custom puppet website!

  • Me too. I used to hide behind our sofa and scream for my mum.

  • in Freudian terms Bert chipped away to his ID & found himself & thus was very happy.

  • I I I I...and Tv's been saying the same thing ever since.

  • Bert's show was on the History channel. LOL

  • Herry, Herbert Birdsfoot, and Mr. Hooper all crowding into the apartment would have made the perfect sort-of-finale before the TV got plugged back in. (I might have even added a Honker, but those characters didn't exist back in '74!)

  • H... H... H... H...xD

  • They legend for me =)

  • This scared me cause of the hum and the way the tv looked

  • The tv in this scene and the humming sound scared me as a kid

  • Seems "H" and "I" often creep into my computer,

    LOL.

    "H" for 'Haha you've got a problem' ...

and "I" for 'Impossible to fix without help' ...

  • the sound of the voice of H frightend me when i was a kid and the tv ....it just scared me alot so my sister turned the tv off

when this scene came on and sometimes i couldnt sleep

  • H...H...H...is for HILARIOUS! Another great Ernie and Bert memory! Makes one wonder, though - was Bert really happy when the 'I' came on the screen in the end, or was he being sarcastic?

  • Hard to tell with Bert.

The "I" program would be great for egomaniac, if you think about it.

  • Hypnotic TV set.....Bert must have got it from the salesman in that old Twilight Zone episode. Maybe it's really a gateway between our world and an evil one or some kind of plot to hypnotize the world and turn all the sesame Street characters into midless zombies?

Well, at least Henry the Hampster can survive on the radiated Hamburger. Those old Cathode Ray TV's were known for their high radiation levels.

I have a friend who collects old TV's like this. Wonder if he has the "H" set?

  • I like this scene. Never seen it on Dutch television. In Dutch all those words start with an H too so I don't see why there's no Dutch version of it.

  • classic!!! creepy!!! poor hamster..

  • H...H...H...is for HILARIOUS! As soon as I started watching this clip, I was snickering almost nonstop at the repetitive H and its accompanying voice! Thanks for posting!

  • take off mah hat BITCH!!! 2:06

  • the wonderful world of pidgions! lol

  • This skit was scary to me as a kid.

  • Lol! H H H Oh for crying out loud...

  • Oh for crying out loud...

  • This freaked me out as a kid. It's probably been 35 years since I've seen this, but I remember being disturbed at the idea that if you put a bucn of random items starting with the same letter into a t.v. it will retailiate with a psychotic monotone chant. On the plus side I have repaired many a t.v. in my day and have the hats to prove it.

  • yes I remember that scary H

  • LOL! a hamster ^_^

  • That is one scary H.

  • Of course the real reason for Bert's issues is due to the digital transition of broadcast television in the United States....Someone should have told him about the FCC $40 coupon!

  • 'Take off that hat Bert, it looks better on me anyhow' Bert, lookie here, Bert, Ernie is going crazy Bert, Bert Bert Bert!

  • I love Ernie's Hmmm Hmmmm Hmmmmmm... like nothing bothers him.

  • the wonderful world of pidgeons, holy fuck, im trippy so bad!!!!!!!!!!

  • "the wonderful world of pigeons"

i still always think of "bernice" when i see a pigeon haha.

poor bert, he was always pissed off hahaha.

  • happens to my TV all the time big problem XD XD XD LOL

  • H-DTV?

  • Isn't a "J" next?

  • lol i love bert

  • It's calling for Triple H. This probably started form "A", when it got to "G" Bert thought it had to do with music, but now he turns it on it's "H", and "I" saying "Hi". After the letters "J" through "Z", it's a whole alphabet word Big Bird didn't know. ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ.

  • Theres nothing wrong with the television..............he's just watching channel 3 thats all!

  • I thought a "J" was next. Calling repairman "triple H". Over.

  • 1:33- "Ernie, what you're doing, you can't do!" Classic!!

  • I used to think a "J" would come next

  • "That looks better on me anyhow."

    Classic.

  • I remember my dad loved this one.

  • This. This is what made my childhood awesome.

  • i'm pretty sure that teaching the children to open the tv set to take out hamburgers and horns is not a bright idea. Freakin 70's...

  • You're looking at it all wrong. Go watch Barney.

  • that wasnt the point of this at all.

  • Re-lax..... He told Bert to unplug it first, didn't he?

Teaching us safe repair techniques, that's what they are doing. But they really should have brought out the rusty, half-melted 14" screwdriver to short out the picture tube first.

  • We were smart enough to not imitate everything on television.

  • DAMN VOICE and the hmmmmm sound is scaring me!! damn CREEPY

  • the voice and background sound is CREEPY and VOICEeven now makes me chilled uhh

  • Oh for crying out loud!

That's something I'd probably say. LOL

  • I like how when Ernie is taking the H-words out of the tv, Bert is like "How do you do that?!" but Ernie is acting like everything is normal. Like it could happen to anyone. :D LOL!

  • H....H.....H.....H...H.....

  • i do believe ernie is chanelling dave letterman

  • Here's your problem!

    The TV's HOLLOW, Bert!

  • "For crying out loud" :o)

... missing "The Wonderful World of Pigeons" !!!

  • "H H H H H H H H H H H H"

  • We never had this sketch in the Netherlands.. I think the producers thought it was scarry for us...

  • Why doesn't Bert like h but loves I? Who is that sayin h?

  • I prefer "H" myself.

  • Who is saying H?

  • Jerry Nelson. He's the same guy who did The Count's voice.

  • lmfao at ernie.

  • funny no screen

  • First of all, Ernie has no experience of how to repair a tv. Dude really needs to stop pretending on how to do stuff sometimes.

  • Hey, Ernie did fix it, sort of.

  • stupid on sesame street?

  • Comment removed

  • lmao! i had the same face expression as bert when i first saw that lol

  • Oh fer cryin' out loud!

I was watching my favourite programme, the world of pigeons, and all of a sudden, this H comes on...

  • I remember as a kid that sound the TV was making scared me. I F#$#n love this skit.

  • At 1:38, that little model house looks just like the ones off the set of Mister Rogers Neighborhood!

  • "Give me that hat bert"

"It look better on me and all, HMMM!"

lol i love how ernie is so mean

  • "H"ahahahahaha......LMAO!!!..

  • In memoriam

    Henry the Hamster

    1972-1979

  • I don't think hamsters live that long.

  • Maybe that hamster did expire and he was haunting the t.v.? That was a problem with first generation plasmas.

  • Bert's reality is static, Ernie's reality is fluid.

  • Ernie sure is one crazy bastard

  • (\__/)

    (='.'=)

    Funny!!!

  • More Jim Henson and Frank Oz at their best. Love it.

  • great video. brings back wonderful memories of my childhood. is bert billy chrystal and is ernie david lettermen? probably not but they sound and act like them.

  • i wish my tv worked like that. my only question is how the- did ernie not realize he put a HAT inside his TV?!

  • oh mine!!thats super funny :D

  • Thanks! I used to have nightmares about this sketch, it really creeped me out. Now I've seen it again! (Hope I can sleep tonight)

  • I don't know if I'd be eating a hamburger that was in the same proximity as a hamster! I just can't accept rodents near my food! lol. Thank you sawing - haven't seen this in eons.

  • This skit was either "H"ilarious or "H"orrifying

  • "I was watching my favorite program and now this 'H' comes on the screen." = The best line ever!

  • why not... sure... hamburger.

  • I haven't seen this skit in ages, and like most of you said, it did creep me out with the flashing H and I, and Jerry Nelson's sinister robotic tone repeating the letter onscreen. Watching it now reminds me why it's such a classic skit. And the comments you guys made to this vid: Priceless. Keep up the good work.

  • Ernie is soo smart! Next time I have a problem I should call him. :)

  • Thank-you so much for posting! I spent an hour last night looking over these old Sesame Street clips, I had to sit for a few minutes and let myself adjust to reality once again. It's like time travel.

  • A wonder of a TV set! It has so many useful things inside!

  • Discovery channel H?

  • THIS SCARED THE LIVING PISS OUT OF ME!!

    THAT VOICE IS CREEPY!!!

And when Ernie turns on the tv OMG I went running for cover, the sound just SCARED ME!!

It still gives me goose bumps!

  • ya the voice of the letters is REALLY creepy

  • Yeah, me too. How could they not realize how creepy that would be to children?

  • I also like the part when Ernie startles Bert with the horn. *laughs*

  • I love how when Ernie takes the H-words out of the tv, Bert is like "How do you do that?!" but Ernie is acting like it's normal. Like anyone can pull things out of the tv. LOL!

  • "Henry let's you and I leave". 3:06

  • H...H...H...H...H...H...

  • Th Wonderful World Of Pigeons!

  • "Another good H word, Bert!"

    and THAT UNIBROW! WOW xD

  • This made me Laugh, A LOT. Man, they don't make kid's shows like this anymore.

  • lmao..."It was just to the best part, and all of a sudden it's H!"

    "What you're doing you can't do...I don't get it..." <3!

  • Why would Bert approve of the I show and get annoyed by the H show?

  • If i understood correctly, he was so disquieted by Ernie pulling out objects from his TV set that he decided to give up and just accept a lesser weirdness :p

  • He's Bert. If he can get excited about bottlecaps and paperclips, why not the Endlessly Repeating I Show?

  • How did Ernie do that?

  • if you have the "Hot In The City" song, would you post it for me? by the way, that was very hilarious!

  • that goddamn H could get so annoying...Bert should thank Ernie for "fixing" it so the TV repeats I's something way more "exciting." :) Ha ha...two more good H words!

  • Anyone agree that this is the funniest Ernie & Bert skit? Which one do you think is the most hilarious?

  • H, then I. Maybe the T.V. just wants to say - Hi?

  • I don't think I'd want to eat that hamburger.

  • Yeah! No one knows for how long it has been lying there))

  • thank you, i haven't seen that since i was a kid in the 70's lmao

  • hah

    berts response it pricelss

i miss this show and the muppets to

  • Yeah I love Bert's facial expressions as Ernie takes the items out of the television set. Totally priceless. Sadly Sesame Street has been reduced to revolve around that whiney Elmo. We may not be able to turn back the hands of time but at we can be thankful there is Youtube.

  • The humor in the early Sesame Street skits was priceless.

  • Bert's fascinated by I. Maybe he's an existentialist. :)

  • either that or he's pandering to the narcissitic nature of television.

  • Too bad for Bert there's no W.

  • Wait wait wait...I like it! I love it! ;D

  • Notice the Van Gogh like portrait of Ernie and Bert. That is funny.

  • Lol!

  • I remember watching these guys on CBC. Pure talent. They don't make kids shows like they used to.

  • Too bad it wasn't flashing the letter "F".

  • i wish i was alive when this first aired, i wish i grew up watching stuff this hilarous.

  • H for hypnotic....phew!

  • I for what!!!

  • Ice lol

  • can i have the hamster please

  • take of the hat Bert, the hat looks better on me any how...hmmmmmmm!

  • LOL H I ok i think i fixed it lol funny ernie

  • What's sad is that I would watch both for hours on end.

  • Bert and Ernie isn't about gay men...

It's a comic play on the Abbot and Costello duo.

  • "I was watching my favorite show, the wonderful world of pigeons..."

  • Best thing I have seen in so long.

  • Wonderful World of Pigeons . Hahahahaahhahahahaha !!

  • berts sarcasm from 1:57 - 2:02 is so awesome

  • "you can't reach into a television set like th...how do you...how?" LMAO... love you Bert and Ernie! xo

  • im 20 yrs old and i laughed at this lol, bert looks so pissed in that pic of him and ernie in the upper left hand corner

  • triple h

  • "Wait wait, hold it hold it!! I like it! I love it! It's exciting!!!" xD

  • It's what we needed all along!

  • Shame Sesame Workshop doesn't understand how awesome this stuff is.

  • lmfao in Japanese this is really funny. "ecchi, ecchi, ecchi...." lol

  • "For crying out loud !!"

  • Damn funny shit!!!

  • I can almost hear some DJ remixing the "H" and "I" and the humming into a really sick techno track!

  • "This isn't happening."

I'd never really appreciated how completely crazy and surreal this show was when I was a kid. This had me laughing so hard I was in tears.

  • this used to scare me

  • Me too, I think--something about that creepy voice repeating itself over and over. I think if my TV started doing that, I'd wet myself =P

  • I'm pretty sure I want the oscillating buzzing H...H...H... as my phone ring.

Honestly, though, this whole video was incredible. I suspended my disbelief almost instantly. Henson and Oz were an incredibly dynamic comedy duo that made me laugh *more* now than they did when I was young and saw it for the first time.

    Welp. Guess I'm old, then.

  • "What's the problem, Bert?" "I was trying to watch my favorite show about pigeons then this stupid presidential debate came on. It's on every channel!" "How boring! They might as well repeat a letter of the alphabet over and over again, like, I don't know, maybe H or I." "I agree, Ernie. I'm for a puppet government anyway."

  • "puppet government" *snort!*

  • DUDE he complains a lot!

  • Anyone else notice bert and ernie sound alot like fozzie and kermit

I know its a Jim henson production but they are so similiar

  • "what possible items could be started with the "I""

Iridescent, irradiated, indigo I-beams? Incandescent, inverted igloos?

    Gods, I'm tired... :-D

Thanks for the post, sawing14s. This always was one of my favourite Ernie and Bert segments!

  • Hamster is the best ;D

  • Bert's blank stare at the 1:00 mark is priceless. I've come to the conclusion that Bert is completely underrated - his voice, his demeanor, everything...amazing.

  • I think hamburger restaraunts should just put a little TV next to every seat. Then, when your burger is ready, the TV will say "H....H...H" and then you just unplug it, open it up and pull out a hamburger! I suppose then you'd have to place orders with a TV remote!

  • H...H....H......H...H...H.....H

  • Oh, for cryin' out loud! XD

  • lol, Thw Wonderful World of Pidgeons. i totally forgot Bert's obsessions

  • LOL! I can totally remember being afraid to go to sleep at night, cause I thought the TV would go H...H...H...H!! The 70's were great huh?!?!!

  • I'd love to see this happen today!

    Millions would be so lost,..

On a sidenote, Ernie is a great support tech!

  • OMG-this is wayyyy funnier than I ever thought it was as a kid :)!

  • Sigh...classic segment. Pure genius.

  • I love how when Ernie starts taking the stuff out of the tv, Bert is like "how are you doing that?" but Ernie is acting like it's normal. LOL!

I also like how Bert got startled by the horn.

  • I am 37 years old and I used to watch them everyday after school (1974-1977). I love them.

  • 1:48 - 1:50 what the hell is bert talking about...

    somtin about a mouse
