Herry, Herbert Birdsfoot, and Mr. Hooper all crowding into the apartment would have made the perfect sort-of-finale before the TV got plugged back in. (I might have even added a Honker, but those characters didn't exist back in '74!)
H...H...H...is for HILARIOUS! Another great Ernie and Bert memory! Makes one wonder, though - was Bert really happy when the 'I' came on the screen in the end, or was he being sarcastic?
Hypnotic TV set.....Bert must have got it from the salesman in that old Twilight Zone episode. Maybe it's really a gateway between our world and an evil one or some kind of plot to hypnotize the world and turn all the sesame Street characters into midless zombies?
Well, at least Henry the Hampster can survive on the radiated Hamburger. Those old Cathode Ray TV's were known for their high radiation levels.
I have a friend who collects old TV's like this. Wonder if he has the "H" set?
H...H...H...is for HILARIOUS! As soon as I started watching this clip, I was snickering almost nonstop at the repetitive H and its accompanying voice! Thanks for posting!
This freaked me out as a kid. It's probably been 35 years since I've seen this, but I remember being disturbed at the idea that if you put a bucn of random items starting with the same letter into a t.v. it will retailiate with a psychotic monotone chant. On the plus side I have repaired many a t.v. in my day and have the hats to prove it.
Of course the real reason for Bert's issues is due to the digital transition of broadcast television in the United States....Someone should have told him about the FCC $40 coupon!
It's calling for Triple H. This probably started form "A", when it got to "G" Bert thought it had to do with music, but now he turns it on it's "H", and "I" saying "Hi". After the letters "J" through "Z", it's a whole alphabet word Big Bird didn't know. ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ.
Re-lax..... He told Bert to unplug it first, didn't he?
Teaching us safe repair techniques, that's what they are doing. But they really should have brought out the rusty, half-melted 14" screwdriver to short out the picture tube first.
I like how when Ernie is taking the H-words out of the tv, Bert is like "How do you do that?!" but Ernie is acting like everything is normal. Like it could happen to anyone. :D LOL!
great video. brings back wonderful memories of my childhood. is bert billy chrystal and is ernie david lettermen? probably not but they sound and act like them.
I don't know if I'd be eating a hamburger that was in the same proximity as a hamster! I just can't accept rodents near my food! lol. Thank you sawing - haven't seen this in eons.
I haven't seen this skit in ages, and like most of you said, it did creep me out with the flashing H and I, and Jerry Nelson's sinister robotic tone repeating the letter onscreen. Watching it now reminds me why it's such a classic skit. And the comments you guys made to this vid: Priceless. Keep up the good work.
Thank-you so much for posting! I spent an hour last night looking over these old Sesame Street clips, I had to sit for a few minutes and let myself adjust to reality once again. It's like time travel.
I love how when Ernie takes the H-words out of the tv, Bert is like "How do you do that?!" but Ernie is acting like it's normal. Like anyone can pull things out of the tv. LOL!
If i understood correctly, he was so disquieted by Ernie pulling out objects from his TV set that he decided to give up and just accept a lesser weirdness :p
that goddamn H could get so annoying...Bert should thank Ernie for "fixing" it so the TV repeats I's something way more "exciting." :) Ha ha...two more good H words!
Yeah I love Bert's facial expressions as Ernie takes the items out of the television set. Totally priceless. Sadly Sesame Street has been reduced to revolve around that whiney Elmo. We may not be able to turn back the hands of time but at we can be thankful there is Youtube.
I'm pretty sure I want the oscillating buzzing H...H...H... as my phone ring.
Honestly, though, this whole video was incredible. I suspended my disbelief almost instantly. Henson and Oz were an incredibly dynamic comedy duo that made me laugh *more* now than they did when I was young and saw it for the first time.
"What's the problem, Bert?" "I was trying to watch my favorite show about pigeons then this stupid presidential debate came on. It's on every channel!" "How boring! They might as well repeat a letter of the alphabet over and over again, like, I don't know, maybe H or I." "I agree, Ernie. I'm for a puppet government anyway."
Bert's blank stare at the 1:00 mark is priceless. I've come to the conclusion that Bert is completely underrated - his voice, his demeanor, everything...amazing.
I think hamburger restaraunts should just put a little TV next to every seat. Then, when your burger is ready, the TV will say "H....H...H" and then you just unplug it, open it up and pull out a hamburger! I suppose then you'd have to place orders with a TV remote!
