Amazing how some of these relatively 'simple' modifications to traditional LCDs can make such a dramatic improvement to displays. Seems like there's been a lot of time devoted to developing minor evolutions to LCDs the last few years instead of developing major improvements like those talked about here.

  • she is such a great inspiring genius of technology :)

  • smart women are so hot!

  • Mary Lou Jepsen makes some very good points about computer display technology in general here. (I also love how she gets giddy when mentioning the cool toys at the LCD manufacturer's lab. As an engineer, I can really relate to that.)

  • If they can get the bi-stable lcds to work then the power consumption advantage of the eink screens disappears.

  • In fact there are working bi-stable LCDs already. Though at this point the refresh rate is even worse than eInk.

One thing I wonder about is if the power consumed while refreshing might still be a significant factor (when comparing the two different technologies)?

  • I guess it depends on how often you change your screen content. The more often you change pages the less advantage the eink has, and if you have any interest in seeing things in color or interactive or video content eink is out of the running. If eink was dirt cheap it might win this race, but it is as expensive as lcds and only 2 big advantages (power saving and contrast) which decreases every year pixelqi makes a new version, batteries get better, and processors become more frugal.

  • The Pixel Qi technology will continue to advance, but then so will eInk. For one thing by the end of this year we will have versions using plastic substrates which will make them ultra thin, flexible, and possibly cheaper than the current [glass substrate] screens. Color and video rate displays have also been demonstrated in the lab.

I don't believe one of these technologies has to outright replace the other. They could find their own different niches.

  • very interesting !

  • I want one of these things so bad, Technology is getting so cool now. I'm glad I was born at the right time to use this stuff

  • she's so right, reading is a crucial part of laptop use! its great to hear someone trying ot make it possible to see a laptop screen outdoors. I spend most of my time reading pdfs on my laptop instead of printing the pages and caring around books with me. i saw the other video where she showed the screen outodoors its amazing, totally readable. give me epaper anyday :) multiple modes, one for inside, one for outside!

  • Great stuff Charbax. Like always!

  • Charbax u rock i bet no 1 else would ever come this far and now somuch ppl :D keep it u p

  • Indeed.
