Of course there haven't been any major attacks since 9/11, they are spending most of their resources fighting NATO troops. The United States is responsible for impowering the Taliban and creating a long dark period of repression, torture and killing in Afghanistan. We cannot intervene in other countries to their detriment and then withdraw at exactly the time when the people who have been hurt by our policies need us the most. We owe it to Afghans to correct our mistakes.

The Soviet-Afghan war in the 80s is irrelevant and was fundamentally different than ours. Their main objective was quite narrow and the Taliban were in a much stronger position militarily garnering full American support; they were also very popular, whereas now they are feared and deeply hated in all parts of the country. This makes American initiatives much more popular than the Soviets'.

More people supported Russians there than they do with NATO these days. Baby doll mines are Paki tools to make Soviets look bad. I know it first hand. I was there and it seems like Russians are single breed of foreigners welcomed there while others are kidnaped or beheaded as soon as they are out of defended compound.

This war has ultimately shifted U.S focus from the world and into one region (middle east). Before this war our goals were merely to prevent another regional power from rising in Eurasia.
