  • But in the first 30 seconds he did over 31 cuts (33)

  • ever tried to cut moving targets with light armor around it?

  • starts at 0.29 ends at 1.12 = 43 secs which is very good but not close as 30 secs! I cant believe not one tried to see the exact timing ! At least say the truth and and cat the bullshit!!!!!

  • That was 45 cuts in like 3/4 of a minute..

  • the same cut every time.......... try to mix it up yo. decent kesa cut though. but that many mats is a lot of damn money.

  • More like 1 cut repeated 31 times and still a little off balance on some of those cuts. Very strong and pretty accurate... but no fluidity. Not so much a show of skill but a show of accuracy...

  • dont have bamboo in tameshigiri ?

  • several of his cuts were very off

  • nerds

  • Very Precise and very smooth cutting great job!

    43 seconds though ;]

  • Umm... Yes it is?

Do you know how well that sword has to be kept for it to cut that well? Do you know how much strength it takes with each strike to cut through one of those?

And to do it 31 times in 30 seconds takes a LOT of practice.

Do some research before you say something is easy. It's usually a lot harder than it looks.

  • Using a Japanese style sword isn't about strength, it's about using your body altogether. Also, this isn't very impressive, I would have to aggree with OriginalSurf. I've seen much better. No one will ever be able to use the sword like the original Japanese Samurai.

  • Well, yeah, I've seen better as well. But to say "it's not a big deal to cut like that" is inaccurate. Because it does take skill to cut that fast and accurately. Even if it's not with fancy maneuvers.

  • if you have to use too much strength that means you are doing something wrong.

  • @crozdral

True. It's more about the momentum and speed behind the technique than strength.

Obviously, I know more about swords than I did 11 months ago. lol

  • dove ti sei dimenticato il te no uchi...? attento a non tagliarti

  • My blender rules

  • nice but I agree with star. You one stroke is nice but you could have doubled or tripled the number of strokes vs time if you used all of the strokes plus with that setup you probably achieve something remarkable. But like I said your stroke is nice.

  • Okay, so that was pretty cool, but I found the lack of variation to be tedious. But cutting so many mats with such precision (that is not landing an awkward cut) is admirable.

  • Samurais were japanese lumberjacks in the old days, thats a fact.

  • I'm a lumberjack and I'm O.K.

  • I sleep all night, and I work all day!!

  • Lol, you said something that doesn't even portain to the video and got a thumbs up! XD

  • Why doesn't anyone ever cut the mats vertically?

  • hey i wanna no that 2

  • It's harder to get the required momentum that way I think.

  • @LiliumNightShade i'm no expert, but i could guess at a couple of reasons

    1. the blade will get stuck betweein the two halves, whereas a diagonal cut allows the blade to go all the way through.

    2. if you were to cut all the way down, you could hit the stand and damage the blade

  • i bet he likes rice aswell.

  • Yeah well he would have cut more if he ate some bacon.

  • he cut 45 times....

  • Read the discriptions..

    -_-

  • its 42 sec..

  • And he cuts more than 31 times. I have count it. He cuts 45 times.

  • in 30 secs of time u need to count not over all.

  • Yea he cuts 45 times BUT only does 31 in 30 seconds, he starts cutting at 30 seconds into the video and 31 cuts is at the 1 minute mark.

  • What is that stuff he cuts?

  • He is cutting rolls of straw mats, in feudal japan they would use inmates or corpses instead

  • Bon Apetii :D :D :D

  • it will be a good garnerd

  • looks like an exam not a show ;) i'd expect it to be orderly

  • a little boring since all the cuts are basically the same. and 42-45 seconds long. not 30.

  • i don't get it.

  • it's 45 cuts from 00:30 to 1:12, so 42 secs...

  • Well, some don't qualify. I forgot that myself.

I am not too sure myself, but some appear to shallow, the cuts are slicing only so much off.

  • This is kinda lame... I mean how come he always cuts from upper right to lower left? Seems like he should alternate sides, you can't always expect one side to be free to move in during a battle.

  • In Tameshigiri, it is not about battle capability but agility and accuracy. you have to be able to cleanly make the cuts with the highest amount of accuracy, not speed.

If you wanted simulated kenjutsu, that's what Kendo is.

  • i love aikido ive bin doing for years come check out my vids first one is poo but my other one is great

  • I counted 45 cuts...

  • 45 cuts in 30sec?

  • Im not sure... I just counted 45 cuts, and i did not see the time

  • I counted 45 too

  • While watching this, I immediately think of cucumbers

  • Lol, might I ask why?

  • Not even they know sir.

  • Haha, yeah...Best not to know.

  • Nice pants! I want those!!!

  • You can buy them at you're local aikido suplier.

  • How very, very ignorant. Samurai aren't "stylish," they're efficient.

  • My comment was deleted and I don't say nothing about my grandmother, but maybe you don't like my opinion. Domo Arigato Gozaimasu. Delete this comment too. Shu Ha Ri.

  • I counted more than 31 cuts.

  • Very nice

  • considering he went thro all those targets at 1 sec per cut and did it in such a manner that looked like the cut tame mats were falling like leaves rather than being cleaved by an axe, i have to say probably takes good form, focus, and breathing

  • 45 cuts in 44 seconds, or .97 cuts a second. That's pretty good for pure speed.

  • I counted approx 45 cuts. Well done, cutting thin slices. I would have loved to see more variation, though.

  • wow yup XxNikourasuxX your powers of observation serve you well but ! the point of the video was to show you flawless Tameshigiri not actual dueling cuts.

  • Please watch comments, Edited out the "my grandma could do better then that" type posts.

  • As shotenken said, you would not use the same attack those many times on an enemy... it could be very easily countered

  • some ofthe sliced bamboo mats are flyng too far should practise more

  • Well...I have experience in many martial arts and MANY sword styles. So I guess I have enough authority and criteria to give my op. Is obvious you wouldn't move like that in between enemies and that you wouldn't repeat the same attack those many times. This is a tameshigiri COMPETITION so is what is supposed to be. And that's all there is to it. Keep it up your form will get better and use the pinky on your left a little more going down.

  • Deltabird !

Been to many sword battles have you ?

  • is this the new zelda game?

  • He's a chopper alright. Good for him.

  • To be honest, I don't think it's as hard as it looks. I want to seem him draw from his scabbard, slice, slice back, "blood whipe", sheath it, then do it again. that would be amazing. But yeah good job none the less, my arms would be tired. X-x;

  • I'd say quite amazing how many cuts aand sometimes he cuts this many tiny pieces of the bamboo and that soo fast is amazing!!

  • Respectfully, this was a competitive event, not an "exercise", to get the most cuts in 30 secs, and safety is always paramount. This was Jason's first time ever attempting this, hence why he performed hidari kesas throughout his routine. However, Jason is a shodan, and very experienced in tameshigiri...so don't be under the impression that beginner students are allowed to even attempt this.

  • His cut angles are good

    BUT

His technique is terrible, he only performs one cut (right kesa), his balance is wrong and he's cutting with his arms (no body).

The fact that the students are TIMED on this excercise is ludicrous. If anything, a student at this guy's level should be encouraged to go SLOWER, not race against the clock.

Foolish beyond belief and an open invitation for accidents of the worst kind.

  • the time is because its not like in a battle u can say hold on, i need to line up lol

  • Timing it was the purpose of the event (most cuts on nine targets in thirty seconds). Timed cutting events have been in Japan for over thirty years. There are open invitations each year for anyone to try World Records sanctioned By United States Sword Federation.

You are welcome to show how you would fair in this pressure situation. In this day and age-it is as close to battle as it gets. Think your metal would work as well under the same circumstances? Safety comes in the preparation.

  • why so slow?

  • I'd tell you to try it yourself, but you'd probably hurt yourself if you haven't practiced this long. (I don't practice tameshigiri myself.)

  • 45 cuts in 42 seconds.

  • very good but that was more than 30 cuts and way more than 30 seconds

  • Yes very good - FYI - The cuts were filmed on digital format to the 1/100th of a second, evaluated for full clean cuts at the proper angle, by M/A professionals from the first cut to the last.

  • VERY GOOD!!!

  • impressize zanshin

  • He's still pretty young and gets better every day!

  • That's a lot of money! :P

  • Not too bad - $54.00 in 31 seconds.
