The Battle of the Scheldt stands only next to the invasion of Normandy itself, according to most historians. The Canadians took this land, and due to Montgomery's most serious error during the war, by insisting they move forward and not hold this valued land. The Canadians having to return to claim back the ports cost almost 6000 lives. Far too little is know about this essential battle, that could have easily changed the outcome of the war.
@c7r7u7i7s7e7r7 Actually the battle of the Scheldt cost 6'367 soldiers from its 4 main operations fighting North from Antwerp, operation switchback, operation Vitality and the final stage in the battle capture of walcharen island. The battle lasted from October 1st till November 8th. overall the liberation of the Netherlands cost Canada 7'600 lives. The Netherlands are still gratefull to this day as liberation day November 8th is now a holiday there my great uncle marched in one of the parades.
Wow. I just did a random search fo "Scheldt Estuary" and am both surprised and truly proud that I have found this video. Have been reading about Canadian forces in WWII, through the likes of Terry Copp and Mark Zeuhlke, and am very proud of what they did. As a future member of the Canadian forces, a formal salute to those who gave their all, and those still giving their best for Canada and the rest of the world.

Another battle that Canadians don't speak of often enough. Honour to our veterans and those who fell. Thanks for posting this.
