I prefer the other ending more, because, I know it is a love story, but do you need to see a kiss in every love story? I found the ending, like we have them in Europe, so strong.. Elizabeth came into the story just like that, and she was gone just like that, and then this beautiful last line from Donald Sutherland.. I've only ever seen the European release: could someone explain? Where are they - does this scene take place after they're married? Does this scene just get attached on the end like in the clip above? It's a very lovely scene, but it does very much seem like it's been randomly attached with no link to what went before. This ending is lovely, albeit very "hollywood", i mean you can imagine all this without it being so explicit ;) that is the beauty of Austen i think. I don't need a cherry on top with Austen, her writing is so magical anyway and the essence of romance in her novels lies in the subtlety of its expression...a kiss or no kiss you can still feel the love!

The American shows the passion Mr. Darcy has for Lizzy which indeed is beautiful and it is what the audience has waited to see during the movie.. We wait and wait for him to show Lizzy his love.. In Central America we had the opportunity to watch both endings, I personally prefer this one, the other I felt like something was missing. The film is european (a british-french coproduction) and the ending you saw is the official one. This is the ending that was only made for the US-audience. Usually it is part of the bonus material on the DVD.

You misunderstood me. This is no censorship. "Pride and Prejdudice" is a britisch-french coproduction, not an american film. The director wanted it to end with the scene between Elizabeth and her father and so it ended - all over Europe.

For commercial reasons they made the american ending, only for the US-audience. But don't worry, if you really need to see them kissing, you will find the american ending as bonus material on the DVD, even in Europe.

The only problem for Europeans whose mother tongue is not English and who want to see this ending: Since this ending was only made for the US-audience they didn't sychronize it. It doesn't exist in Spanish, French, German or Italian as far as I know. On my DVD (bought in Spain) there is only the english (american) version.
